For my entire career, I’ve been building brands behind the scenes for female founders who were just a few paces ahead of me. Seeing their growth up close felt like a direct mirror for my own potential. They gave me that expansive feeling. If she can do it, so can I.

I’m a brand marketer who works at the intersection of storytelling, marketing, community-building, and helping founders find their voice. I’ve always been able to see other people’s magic — and translate it into a message, an offering, a brand that resonates with and finds the people who need to hear it.

“When would I have the courage to put myself out there, and share my own talents, ideas, and creativity with the world?”

But after a decade of telling other people’s stories — and watching their success expand because of it — I started to have this nagging feeling. If I can do this for others, why am I not doing it for myself? When would I have the courage to put myself out there and share my own talents, ideas, and creativity with the world?

Around my 30th birthday, these questions stopped being theoretical. I was frustrated and shrinking into the background of operations — telling myself that if I could just figure out what I wanted to build, say, or share, then I’d finally start. Once I knew what it was, putting myself out there would feel obvious. But the truth was: Waiting for clarity had become another way of hiding.

You might be familiar with the concept of a “Saturn return.” It’s that period of time in your late twenties when the universe taps you on the shoulder and says, gently but firmly: It’s time to stop living on potential and start taking responsibility for the life you actually want. Whether or not you believe in astrology, this maturation point between 28–31 usually illuminates everything you’ve been avoiding, and asks you to let go of any conditioning that’s not serving the authentic expression of your gifts… and this happens again between 57–60, when life asks you to evaluate if you’re happy with how things are unfolding mid-life.

In the throes of my questioning, I connected with a new friend. She was at a crossroads in her career — burned out on agency life and craving more freedom. Because I’d taken an alternative path as a career freelancer, my advice came from the very real way I’d navigated my own work: Helping her see her value as a creative, understand her marketable skills, and identify brands she could offer them to directly so she could make more money on her own terms.

I didn’t see this advice as anything special. I was just helping a friend by sharing a perspective that felt second nature to me. But when she implemented what I suggested — and saw immediate, tangible success — she reflected it back to me clearly: You have to teach other people how to do this.

“I was ready to put my energy somewhere — to finally build something of my own — so I followed the ping and started down the path.”

At first, I thought it was a boring idea. Teach people how to freelance? I was looking for something more exciting. But I was ready to put my energy somewhere — to finally build something of my own — so I followed the ping and started down the path of creating an e-course.

Excited by the process, I wrote lessons, recorded audio content, designed my brand, and came up with fun marketing ideas. I poured myself into the project for the next eight months, and just when I thought I was nearly ready to launch, it hit me. Now I needed to put myself out there if I really wanted to build this brand… and that felt really, really scary.

I stumbled across a video by an inspiring woman building a business around upskilling the corporate workforce. She shared her journey from zero to thousands of followers after committing to a daily value-forward social media experiment. I related to her background and was motivated by her story, but I remember lying in bed thinking, I would sooner die than put videos of myself on the internet.

And it wasn’t because I wasn’t outgoing or confident. It was because I was afraid of what other people would think of me.

Some of the worries and doubts that tried to hold me back included:

 • What if I’m cringey or seem like a try-hard?
 • What if nobody cares or engages at all?
 • What if I’m not actually good at this?
 • What if I run out of things to say?
 • What if I can’t follow through and fail in front of everyone?
 • What if I just don’t want people thinking about me at all?

But underneath all of those fears was a bigger, heavier question: What if I stayed silent and never shared at all? What would it cost me to keep my work — and myself — hidden?

And what might be possible if I were brave enough to try?

If any of this feels familiar, you’re not alone. Whether you’re an artist, writer, entrepreneur, leader, coach, professional — or simply someone with lived experience and ideas you want to share — the fear of being seen shows up for all of us. Especially when the work is personal. Especially when it matters.

Pushing through that fear isn’t just about confidence or self-expression. It’s about honoring what’s inside you. It’s about allowing your work to find the people it’s meant to serve. And it’s about opening yourself up to new opportunities, meaningful connections, and conversations that can only happen when you let yourself be visible.

“It’s about honoring what’s inside you. It’s about allowing your work to find the people it’s meant to serve.”

Since that moment of panic lying in bed, I’ve done the thing anyway. I launched. Over the last 12 months, I’ve shared hundreds of videos across social platforms, stayed consistent with my Substack, and started mentoring other founders, creatives, and leaders on how to put themselves out there in a way that actually feels aligned.

Being brave enough to share has led to clients, speaking engagements, brand partnerships, features, sales, new friends, and community. Best of all, I feel proud when I look at my growing body of work and know it’s offering real value to people.

So if you’re ready to step into the light and start sharing, here are the lessons that helped me.

Sharing your work is not showing off — it’s creating visibility

Sharing your work isn’t about showing off — or even about followers. It’s about creating visibility for yourself so you’re top of mind when opportunities arise, or when people need the services, skills, and perspective you can offer.

For a long time, I thought creating content and being visible meant making myself the center of attention. I even judged myself for wanting that. I’ve spoken to so many people who avoid sharing altogether because they don’t want to be self-aggrandizing, egotistical, or show-offy.

What I’ve learned is that visibility isn’t about drawing attention to yourself. It’s about letting your work circulate without trying to control how it’s received. Visibility isn’t vanity. It’s distribution.

“Visibility isn’t vanity. It’s distribution.”

You also get to control the tone of your output. If you’re not a show-offy person, you don’t suddenly become one by sharing your work. You can show up quietly, generously, and with the simple intention of letting the right people find what you’ve made.

When you share what you do, you’re not imposing — you’re offering

Here’s the simple part we often forget: If you don’t tell people what you’re doing, you can’t expect them to know. I had a friend who finally shared her freelance writing services and Substack on LinkedIn to her professional network after years of resistance — and in 24 hours, she got 2 new inbound clients and 75 subscribers… it could be that easy.

“If you don’t tell people what you’re doing, you can’t expect them to know.”

So many people have talents, services, creative projects, or businesses they hope will lead to clients, sales, or opportunities — but they haven’t even told their immediate circle what they’re working on. Meanwhile, people are looking for resources all the time. They’re trying to solve problems. They’re asking for recommendations.

When you share what you do, you’re not imposing — you’re offering. You’re giving people a chance to remember you when the moment is right. That’s not self-promotion. It’s a service. And when done thoughtfully, it’s a win-win.

You don’t have to have it all figured out — clarity unfolds over time

When you’re starting off, begin with a few simple intentions: share your work, provide value to others, and stay consistent — even if consistency, for now, means once a month.

As you put things out into the world, you’ll start to receive feedback on what you create – through messages, comments, and conversations. Pay more attention to the qualitative signals than the vanity metrics.

“When you let yourself start before you feel ready, your work begins to take shape in conversation with the world instead of in isolation.”

Try not to judge your work or over-strategize too early. Give yourself at least ten pieces (posts, articles, videos) before deciding what’s working. You’re still getting your bearings — learning what feels good to create, noticing who’s on the other side, and understanding what you want to build by paying attention to what energizes you.

When you let yourself start before you feel ready, your work begins to take shape in conversation with the world instead of in isolation.

What I’ve learned is that clarity is a byproduct of movement, not a requirement for it. I didn’t find my voice by thinking harder in private. I found it by showing up, sharing what felt true that day, and noticing what resonated.

You don’t have to pretend to be an expert; share from your experience

We don’t need more people pretending to have it all figured out. We need more people willing to be honest, relatable, and open enough to let others walk alongside them.

“We need more people willing to be honest, relatable, and open enough to let others walk alongside them.”

What’s often more compelling than the final result is the journey itself – the micro-moments that shape you along the way. The mistakes you’ve made. The challenges you learned from. The times you took the long, circuitous route. The moments when things unexpectedly worked out, or when you met someone who shifted the trajectory of your life.

Instead of trying to polish everything into “content,” start sharing what’s already present for you:

 • What have you been thinking about lately?
 • How did you make whatever you’re sharing?
 • What are you learning in real time?
 • What’s something you wish you knew before that now feels like a no-brainer?
 • How do you feel about sharing your work?
 • Who do you hope it reaches?

Sharing what’s alive in you today is where authenticity and connection stem from. You don’t need to position yourself as an expert. Being just 10% ahead of someone is 100% valuable to them.

It’s all material for your growth

Whatever feelings arise for you around this process — note them. They are not trying to stop you from moving forward… they are just ready to be felt so that you can move to your next level.

Whether it’s imposter syndrome, self-doubt, shame, embarrassment, self-judgment… see them for what they are: opportunities to release something that’s been holding you back, instead of roadblocks to what you want.

“Someone out there is looking for exactly what you have to offer. “

You don’t have to become an influencer, over-expose yourself, or suddenly feel completely fearless. The only goal is to take one step at a time — to share what’s already inside you and trust that the path will reveal itself as you keep moving.

Start where you are, and let yourself be seen a little more than yesterday. Someone out there is looking for exactly what you have to offer.

So if there’s something you’ve been wanting to say or share, consider this your permission slip. I’ll be cheering you on.

Here’s how to make one for yourself.

As a kid, one of my favorite activities was collaging. Usually, with a friend, I’d paste together magazine and newspaper clippings into a new piece of artwork that I’d promptly forget about or hang on the fridge until it got crusty. Vision boarding isn’t exactly collaging for adults — but it’s not too far from it. The hands-on craft can be a form of manifestation and help with turning our ideas into realities.

Simply put, a vision board is “a visual representation of your goals,” media and life coach Zakiya Larry tells Oprah Daily. And it’s slightly different from a mood board. Instead of focusing solely on aesthetics, a vision board concentrates on bigger-picture life ambitions. But you can feel free to make your vision board as aesthetically engaging as you like.

“[Vision boards] can help you take the time to actually think about what you want, something that many of us don’t do,” says Suzy Rosenstein, Master Life Coach & Midlife Mentor. “Creating the life you want doesn’t happen by accident.”

Countless thought leaders and life coaches, like Eckhart Tolle and Deepak Chopra, endorse this technique of visualizing your desires each and every day too — as part of the effort to achieve your dreams.

“Studies show how vision boards serve as powerful visualization tools, which actually help us achieve our goals.”

Likewise, studies show how vision boards serve as powerful visualization tools, which actually help us achieve our goals. According to Psychology Today, visualization as a cognitive tool can help folks work through anxiety, prepare for a big work event, or bring certain life goals to fruition.

Visualization works by helping your reticular activating system (RAS), your brain’s filter, stay on top of which messages to filter in and out. “The more you keep your goals ‘top of mind,’ the more your subconscious mind will work to reach them,” explains Ruben Gonzalez, four-time Olympian and author of “The Courage to Succeed,” in an interview with “Entrepreneur.” “That’s why writing your goals down every day, visualizing your intended outcome, and regularly saying affirmations is so important.”

So if you want to finally start your own business, learn yoga, go on your dream trip to Zanzibar, or maybe learn to restore your own furniture, looking at inspiring images can actually help you reach those goals.

If you’re ready to roll up your sleeves, follow this quick guide to head off into your bright future.

How to make a vision board

1. Brainstorm your vision board

Grab a pen and paper and ask yourself a few questions about how you see your life. Here are some sample questions to help you get started:

 • What values are most important to you?
 • What career/financial goals do you have for the next year?
 • What are you saving up for?
 • What are your dream travel destinations?
 • Do you have any wellness goals?
 • What do you want your home to look like?
 • What’s your vision for your relationships with others?
 • What’s your vision for your relationship with yourself?
 • What do you want to bring more of into your life?
 • Think of any inspirational quotes that are important to you.

Jot down the answers to your favorite questions above. Now you have a solid basis for what to fill your vision board with.

2. Source imagery

The good old-fashioned magazine method is super successful here. Flip through magazines and rip out images that align with your notes — or images that make you feel inspired. You can also opt to print out any image your heart desires from the internet. Consider adding photos you’ve taken yourself, quotes that inspire you, lists, decorative embellishments, and even recipes.

3. Gather crafting materials

If you love breaking out the glue stick, then grab a poster board from the store and start pasting! But if you want a vision board that’s more easily transitional, use a corkboard and push pins. You’ll also probably need scissors, tape, markers or pens, and a chunk of free time to set aside.

4. Create your vision board

Once you’ve gathered your images, and materials, and set aside an hour or two, it’s time to structure your board. Lay everything out to see what looks best before you commit to scissors or glue. Which images or themes are the most important to you? Consider putting them in the center of your board. You can even turn this into a self-care situation, with music, candles, and maybe friends. Take your time with this, since you’ll have to look at it every day, multiple times a day (that’s the idea).

Rosenstein notes that she prefers to take her time with vision boards, instead of finishing them in one sitting. “My process starts with giving myself time and space,” she says, noting that she’ll source imagery as she feels inspired over the course of a few weeks, before beginning to work on her board little by little.

5. Or create a digital vision board!

Maybe you skip the physical vision board altogether and create a digital one instead. Pinterest is a go-to for collecting images and inspiration, while stock photo sites like Dupe offer beautiful visuals that can match your exact aesthetic. For an easy, user-friendly design tool, Canva is perfect for for building your board. Check out some of our editor’s vision board below, created using images from Pinterest!

6. Put it up for display!

Et voilà! You can put the board anywhere, as long as you’ll see it regularly. If it’s small, your bedside table or fridge is perfect. Your desk or bedroom wall may be other good spots. If you’ve opted for a digital vision board, set your phone screen or desktop background as your vision board so you can revisit your board daily!

Here’s the best thing about a manifestation tool like a vision board: It’s not permanent. Add new images when you feel inspired, or tear off the ones that no longer serve you. Some folks like to make a new vision board each calendar year, every six months, or just whenever it feels right.

“Here’s the best thing about a manifestation tool like a vision board: It’s not permanent.”

And you don’t have to make just one vision board — consider a career-focused one that you keep at work, a travel vision board, or a food vision board in the kitchen.

Most importantly, this exercise is all about doing what’s right for you. Once you start getting inspired by images and quotes and feel the creativity start to flow, you’ve unlocked a powerful tool to help you make some of your dreams a reality. A vision board itself won’t change your life, but your actions can then bring that vision board into existence.

Has anyone ever told you to just be yourself

It’s the sort of advice we give each other just before all those first impression experiences — job interviews, first dates, going to a new school — that tend to stir up a storm of nerves. We want people to like us. We want to feel understood and find connection with one another. It’s normal to feel nervous about how others might perceive us for the first time. New people and new environments can feel scary!

“Has anyone ever told you to just be yourself?”

Which is how we might find ourselves engaging in such classic, eleventh hour preparations as trying on every single item of clothing we own before panic-purchasing an entire new outfit; practicing our talking points in the mirror or on our phones with all the fervent focus of a professional actor learning lines for their Broadway debut; calling our loved ones to spiral out just a little bit about everything that could possibly go wrong, and why we’re not remotely ready for this, and how maybe, actually, we’re coming down with a cold anyway, and it’s probably the right thing to just call the whole thing off, right?

Our loved ones will sigh, or laugh, or dismiss our concerns with an airy wave of their hand. “Oh stop, you’ll be fine! ” they say, their tone warm but firm. “Just be yourself.”

This, I’m sorry to say, is terrible advice.

No offense to your best friend, or partner, or mom, but saying “just be yourself!” to someone in the throes of strategizing their first impression is like shouting “just calm down!” to a yowling cat in the middle of a bath it does not want to be taking. The cat is not going to calm down, because the cat does not understand what you’re saying.

Which is exactly the problem with just be yourself, too.

“We’ve been taught our whole lives that there’s a ‘right’ way to be, which is often directly at odds with being, well, ourselves.”

We’ve been taught our whole lives that there’s a “right” way to be, which is often directly at odds with being, well, ourselves.

Most of us, for example, probably have a professional wardrobe that doesn’t necessarily overlap with our preferred clothes. If how we dress ourselves is important to us, then the restrictions of a corporate wardrobe might have a fairly strong impact on our sense of self. “Just be yourself, but just not in that outfit” doesn’t have the same ring though, does it?

I’m not convinced we use “just be yourself” literally anyway. The expression is used less as a directive, and more as a vote of confidence. I believe in you, our loved ones are really saying. I like you just as you are. We know they mean it too, because we’re likely standing in our underwear with our mascara running while every insecurity we’ve ever had comes bubbling to the surface when they say it.

“You have to say that,” I’ve said to my mom and my spouse over the years, wholly dismissing their attempts to mollify me. “You already love me.” Because it’s true that as we grow closer with people throughout our lives, we make more room for each other’s messy stuff. The less we know and trust one another, however, makes very little room for error. How many times have we been warned about the power of first impressions, after all?

Making a good impression relies on the ability to perform — to play the role of the ideal job candidate, or a desirable romantic partner, for example. A good performance will require some basic knowledge and social competency for what’s wanted in these interactions; a great performance will require the ability to read the room and adapt to their audience. When the goal is to be chosen, authenticity isn’t usually the strategy we go for. When we want to win the approval of others, we have to be some version of ourselves we know they will like.

“When the goal is to be chosen, authenticity isn’t usually the strategy we go for.”

After years spent learning that success in professional, social, and romantic spheres requires us to curb whatever won’t fit the mold, it seems only natural that many of us might not know what it means to “be ourselves” anymore — let alone live authentically. What does it mean to be ourselves in a world that’s constantly reminding us that there is an ideal that we should be striving to become?

Even the small ways we might have made ourselves more likeable over the years can take their toll, whether it’s been in modulating the volume of our voice or learning to keep our opinions to ourselves because people seem to prefer us that way.

It’s exhausting to live like this. But it can be terrifying to try to make space for the parts of yourself you’ve been modifying for so long. How do you even start?

Authenticity is built, not found

It’s nearly impossible to get on the internet without stumbling into a wellness influencer claiming that they’ve found the secret to living an authentic life. I watch these videos. I’m fascinated with how we define ourselves in the age of social media, when the space between our actual lived lives and the presentations online are only the beginning of a quantum-level fragmentation of what “the self” has become. But I’m rarely satisfied with these influencers, usually because their narratives hinge on the idea that our authentic, true selves are something static that we simply have to find.

“I don’t think our authentic self is something we can search for, but is instead something we have to create.”

Flat out, I don’t believe that. I think people are processes, from both the biological standpoint of human development and the psychological standpoint of lived experience and the accumulation of knowledge. We change. We are constantly evolving, shifting, becoming. So when we talk about trying to “be ourselves” and about being authentic, I don’t think we’re trying to define some fixed, hidden entity. In other words, I don’t think our authentic self is something we can search for, but is instead something we have to create.

So … how do we do that?

Timm Chiusano, a multi-hyphenate executive and thought leader, created a short video summarizing the best paper I’ve come across on the topic of authenticity, A Multicomponent Conceptualization of Authenticity: Theory and Research, by Michael H. Kernis, Brian M. Goldman. “This is what it means to actually be your authentic self,” he says at the beginning of the video.

Let’s break it down:

Step 1: Building a bold self-awareness of your emotions, preferences, abilities, and motives

Right to the deep end! Self-awareness is one of those deceptively tricky concepts that is all too easy to think we’ve mastered, only to discover in some crucial, vulnerable moment down the line just how far we still have to go.

That’s because self-awareness requires a willingness to not just look at yourself straight on, but to actually see what’s there. Not what we want to see, or what we know we’re supposed to see, but what’s actually, truly, really there. To see clearly and boldly.

Our emotions, preferences, and abilities are sometimes straightforward enough. Even if we have big or complicated feelings, or if we have unpopular opinions, we become more comfortable with naming these as they are as we age. Similarly, making peace with our abilities can come with maturity as well. Motives, however, can be much more challenging to identify. Some motives like to hide even from our own consciousness, riding on the coattails of other motives that are maybe more acceptable or appealing. Just like we can have multiple feelings at once, we can find ourselves serving multiple motives, too. Being able to look at these boldly means being totally honest about every motive you’re responding to — whether you like what you see or not.

Step 2: Unbiased processing: understanding your strengths and weaknesses without blame or denial

Your inner critic is not invited to this part of the journey. Because after working on our self-awareness, the next step is processing our findings without making value judgments.

“Your inner critic is not invited to this part of the journey.”

Did your motivation audit uncover a hunger for attention? No judgment. Self-awareness looks like: knowing that the reason you felt sulky after the board meeting was because your colleague got more props than you did, even though you had volunteered to create the slideshow for your boss’s presentation because you are better skilled.

Biased processing looks like: chastizing yourself for getting upset, and feeling guilty about not being able to control your emotions. Poor self-awareness looks like: blaming the boss and your colleague for taking you for granted.

Unbiased processing looks like: understanding that volunteering to show off your skills is not a guarantee that you will actually get that attention. If doing the work hinges on getting more visibility and it doesn’t pay off, you will need to manage your disappointment, frustration, and irritation — without drawing the wrong kind of attention to yourself.

Wanting more visibility and attention for your talents is not an inherently good or bad desire; how you manage that motivation depends on your ability to satisfy it in unharmful ways.

Understanding these aspects of ourselves without getting caught in the sticky webs of blame and denial is hard work. But the payoff is more than worth it, because once we get good at this part, we become untouchable.

Think about it: If we can look at ourselves straight on, then what was once a fatal flaw is now a mere weakness. And weaknesses can be strengthened.

Step 3: Behaviors that are focused on values, needs, and success without the distractions of criticism, rejection, and fear of failure

Once you’ve worked on auditing yourself boldly without bias, you should have a better understanding of your internal patterns and tendencies. It’s time to bridge the gap between what you’ve become aware of and what kind of person you want to be.

“It’s time to bridge the gap between what you’ve become aware of and what kind of person you want to be.”

While our feelings are not in our control, our behaviors are choices. Letting our feelings guide our behaviors isn’t always in our best interest — especially when what we’re feeling is at odds with what we believe.

For example, my daughter often wants to ask me the same question over and over again in a single afternoon. I will answer her in good faith the first few times, but then I start to lose my patience. “I already told you.” “I know,” she says. “I can’t remember.” She is six. She wants to know stuff like what a canary was used for in mines, and also what a mine is. None of the questions are straightforward, and my attempts at developmentally appropriate answers seem to only beg more questions. But she doesn’t yet know how to articulate what she wants to understand, so instead she says “What did the canary do in the mine, again?”

My feelings during these exchanges range from fond exasperation to suffocating panic. I feel trapped and frustrated, irritated to be repeating myself yet again, and annoyed that she doesn’t appear to be absorbing my words.

Reader, I do not act from these feelings. Because I believe that it is my job to cultivate her trust. I want her to come to me with her questions, and to know that I am her guide for the world. So I have to breathe and keep my tone calm and say the same thing multiple times. Because that is how she’s learning now, and I’m investing in much more than those ten minutes of irritation.

If we are clear on what we believe, on our core values, and our top priority needs, we can choose to act in service of these things — and not from anything else.

Step 4: Relational orientation: The ability to meet others where they are

The coolest part about building our own authenticity through self-awareness is that it makes us much better at seeing and understanding others, too. The more we understand how multifaceted our own feelings and motivations can be, and the more we untangle our own biases and tendencies to moralize what’s not in our control, the easier it is to do the same for everyone else.

“The coolest part about building our own authenticity through self-awareness is that it makes us much better at seeing and understanding others, too.”

Our experiences with minor friction out in the world shifts for the better once we’ve gotten to this step. The surly neighbor might take on a new dimension when we stop assigning negative judgments to their monosyllabic greetings. It might feel easier to be stalled in the cashier line when the mom juggling three toddlers has to run to get a new carton of berries right at the end of her turn. Compassion and patience are not qualities we strongarm or shame ourselves into; they come to us honestly, when we are living as our most authentic, true selves.

Now we get to experience authentic connection — to both ourselves and to others — without anything getting in the way. And isn’t that what we wanted all along? ✨

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

We’ve researched and tested hundreds of desks with eco-friendly and nontoxic materials — these are our top picks for a sustainable home office.

We’re upgrading our desks to maximize our productivity and comfort, and we think you might be too. If you’re also on the hunt for a new desk that is maybe a step up from IKEA, check out these sustainable and nontoxic options with local manufacturing, responsibly sourced materials, and low or neutral carbon emissions. Top it off with a comfy and eco-conscious desk chair, and you’ll be good to go.

Why choose a desk made with eco-friendly and nontoxic materials?

You might opt for a wooden desk or one made with nontoxic and sustainable materials for a few reasons — aesthetic appeal, durability, safety, and sustainability being at the top of the list. Unfortunately, many conventional desks are treated with toxic chemicals like formaldehyde, phthalates, flame retardants, and wood preservatives to prevent surface defects, which can wreak havoc on the air quality of our home and health. That’s why choosing a nontoxic desk made with all natural and nontoxic finishes is so important, especially when most of us spend the majority of our days at our desks!

The natural beauty of wooden desks offers a timeless appeal and can easily complement other furniture in your home. High-quality materials are also made to be sturdy and durable, especially when made from hardwoods — meaning your furniture will stand the test of time. Best of all, many sustainable wood desks are made with wood from sustainably managed forests, or reclaimed wood, which is better for our environment.

Our criteria:

Our editors have filled their homes with sustainable and nontoxic furniture for years. We’ve relied on our first-hand experience, corresponding with the top brands, and reading thousands of customer reviews to make our selections. The options on this list are all nontoxic, eco-friendly, and will enhance the comfort and overall look of your workspace. We’ve even included at least one more affordable option on the list. We regularly update this list with new favorites that meet the following criteria.

 • COMFORT & DESIGN | All of the nontoxic desks on this list — whether you’re looking for solid wood, bamboo or something else — will elevate your space.
 • SUSTAINABLE & ECO-FRIENDLY | The brands below use reclaimed or responsibly sourced materials to ensure your desk is good for the earth and good for you too. You’ll find options that are FSC certified, Climate Neutral, and registered B Corps. These high quality materials mean your desk will last for years to come, too.
 • NONTOXIC | Not only are these nontoxic desks made with natural materials, they’re never treated with any hard chemicals that could disrupt your health while you work. Most of these come with reputable certifications that indicate low-to-no emissions.
 • AFFORDABLE | Investing in your workspace can be steep. We’ve included at least one option that is lower cost for smaller budgets.

And, of course, if these desks aren’t your style, consider renting or going secondhand. Be sure to add on these nontoxic rugs and sustainable office chairs for a cozy and conscious upgrade to your workspace!

The post 9 Best Blue Light Glasses From Sustainable Brands (2026) appeared first on The Good Trade.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

If you work from home or spend a lot of time staring at screens, you may be considering a pair of computer glasses (aka blue light glasses). Read on to learn about the benefits of blue light glasses and why we recommend shopping sustainable and eco-friendly brands for your first (or next!) pair.

Do I need computer glasses?

Between computers for work and our phones for play, we’re often spending upwards of 12 hours a day looking at some sort of digital screen. That’s a lot for our eyes, which can dry out or bring on headaches. One potential solution is to invest in blue light glasses. With tech emitting brighter, shorter wavelength light (aka the blue light), filtering glasses can help reduce digital eye strain, aid with sleep, and more. While the jury’s still out on whether light-blocking glasses work for everyone, it may be worth picking up a pair of your own to see for yourself.

We’ve found nine eyewear brands offering blue light filters with prescription or non-Rx glasses, all using sustainable materials sourced from plants or recycled plastic. With frames starting at just $50, it’s a worthwhile investment to ease your eyes’ everyday experience.

Pro Tip: If you have vision insurance, you may be able to submit a claim for reimbursement after ordering blue light glasses. Likewise, you may be able to use FSA/HSA dollars when purchasing. Check with your insurance provider’s benefits or the brand’s website to see if this is an option!

Why consider sustainable blue light glasses?

The production and disposal of plastic eyewear frames are known for having a major impact on environmental degradation, which makes sustainable blue light glasses a smart and responsible choice. Eco-friendly frames can reduce waste and our carbon footprint, and the production process of sustainable eyewear involves fewer harmful chemicals, helping to minimize pollution and conserve natural resources while prioritizing fair labor practices and safe working conditions. An added bonus: Sustainable blue light glasses are typically made of more durable and high-quality materials, reducing the need for frequent replacements!

Our criteria:

After personally wearing and vetting the best sustainably made blue light computer glasses, these are our top picks that use sustainable materials and ethical practices and are durable, too. Our editor explores authentic ways we can show up online.

The post How To Level Up Your Online Presence In 2026 appeared first on The Good Trade.

]]>
I disappeared from the internet three years ago. Mostly.

During the height of the pandemic lockdowns, I deactivated or privatized all my social accounts. It was for my own good—numbing my big feelings with memes and escaping into lives I was envious of had become toxic for me. The idea of having a “good” online presence in 2020 was just too much for me to handle, while we were already coping with so much.

The only thing that remained was my work, which I fed daily from a desk tucked into the corner of my living room. Day in, and day out, I existed online only through my job and amongst strangers in anonymous video game voice chats.

But now things are starting to change; I’m out in the world again after a long hibernation, meeting humans and making IRL friends for the first time in years.

So I logged back in and dug through my accounts, like an identity archaeologist, to see what my online presence had been before the upheaval. I discovered my old Instagram posts and website no longer matched the person I was becoming. I needed to update…well, everything.

“I want my online ‘home’ to be a place I enjoy existing and playing in on my terms.”

Not because I’m becoming an influencer or launching a business, but because I want my online “home” to be a place I enjoy existing and playing in on my terms. I want to hand over my handle with confidence, knowing when a new potential friend or contact glances at my profile, they’ll have a basic understanding of who I am and what I love.

I reached out to my peers, career coaches, and recruitment experts to learn more about building an online presence that works for you instead of against you. Here’s what I’ve learned.

First, do you need an online presence?

You don’t need an online presence to be valued socially or professionally if it doesn’t align with your goals. You, as a person, remain as brilliant and delightful whether you have an Instagram or not.

However, it can be a valuable tool for meeting people, cultivating friendships, and finding new opportunities—sharing a website or TikTok page can serve the same purpose as handing over a business card. But it doesn’t need to be highly curated or have thousands of followers or subscribers to be effective!

If you choose to have an online presence and want to start using it to present yourself in the world, welcome aboard. But how do you balance intention and authenticity in a world of curated posts and deceiving filters?

“How do you balance intention and authenticity in a world of curated posts and deceiving filters?”

Get clear on your goals

Start by learning whether you’re an online person or not. Dayana Cadet, a Clarity Coach and founder of I See You, Sis, recommends asking yourself: “Who are you trying to connect with, and where do they hang out?” Maybe it’s in-person community events or online on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Discord, or Slack.

“Who we are is completely unrelated to how many followers we have, or how much of our lives we choose to share.”

If social media is the right fit for you, I encourage you to release any external expectations of how you have to use it before setting your goals.

“I also always make it a point to remind folks that their online presence can be as buttoned up or as vulnerable as they’re comfortable with,” says Cadet, “but it does have to be authentic to who they are.” That’s because who we are is completely unrelated to how many followers we have, or how much of our lives we choose to share.

Instead of looking at the numbers, consider who you want to speak to and why. What next actions do you want friends, followers, or subscribers to take after they come across your online self? Do you want them to be inspired by you? To hire you? To challenge you? Or to feel empowered, or joyful?

Perhaps you don’t want them to take any action at all and just prefer to keep your online presence as a one-way portfolio showcase. That’s okay!

Some goals you might consider here:

 • Showcasing your hobbies like design, art, writing, etc.
 • Sharing your social media as a calling card after networking events
 • Connecting with your friends and family only
 • Building a portfolio for new work or freelance opportunities
 • Giving and receiving validation from friends + strangers
 • Connecting with folks outside of your friends and family who have similar life experiences
 • Making people laugh
 • Remaining an anonymous lurker (no harm in that! Just don’t be creepy)

Then, do a quick facelift

If your brain works like mine does, it’s easy to get caught up in all-or-nothing thinking that says everything must be done right now. (Get a professional headshot, a new URL, all the corresponding social media handles, take over the world, etc.) You don’t have to do it this way. Trust me, you’ll feel healthier and more grounded if you take this one step at a time.

Here’s a quick checklist for updating your online presence, whether it’s for work or play:

 1. Update your profile picture to reflect what you currently look like. This is especially helpful if you’ve dyed or cut your hair (🙋‍♀️) or have other appearance changes you want to convey.
 2. Revisit your bio! Who are you at work, outside of work, what do you like, or what do you post about most frequently? Here is a bundle of bio ideas if you’re feeling uninspired.
 3. Archive photos, posts, or blog entries that don’t feel aligned with who you are now. Keep them if you’re comfortable with it!
 4. Highlight your most authentic self by pinning your favorite photos, updating the date on your most well-loved blog post, or creating new content that reflects your current goals and lifestyle. (I like to think of it like this—what three things do I want folks to understand about me when they stumble across my online persona?)
 5. Review your LinkedIn presence to see if it’s relevant to your goals. Especially if you’re job searching or in a people-facing job (as many of us are), at least ensure your job title, history, and profile picture are up to date.
 6. Update your personal website with color schemes and copy that conveys who you are currently. If you don’t have a personal website, don’t rush it. Start with the online presence you already have, and don’t force the time and financial investment until you feel ready to do so.
 7. Look over everything for red flags, especially if you’re on the job hunt. “Avoid being eye-catching in the wrong ways,” says Matt Erhard of Summit Search Group, a recruiting firm in Canada. Small or inconsistent online presences aren’t a turn-off for recruiters, but Erhard notes hiring managers may think twice “if your online content makes you seem toxic, untrustworthy, or like you’d be a liability for the company if hired.” (The same applies if you’re looking for friends or romantic partners!)

Fit your online life into your routine, not the other way around

If you often find yourself stopping important life events or ignoring momentous occasions in favor of posting to “the ‘gram,” it might be worth examining. Are you sharing things you genuinely enjoy and believe others will too, or are you posting solely for the algorithm to do its magic work and make you look wealthier, or smarter, or sexier? (It’s okay, we’ve all done it).

Our online presence is not an extension of our personality—rather, it’s a vehicle. That means we aren’t who we claim to be online but how we claim to be it. If you’re posting only what you want others to think about you, even though it’s not true, your online persona is simply a product of others’ expectations.

“We aren’t who we claim to be online but how we claim to be it.

To help with this, you might create a mini set of guidelines or principles for posting to social media if you have a hard time knowing what’s authentic. I’m finding words I can recite when I wonder if something is an aligned post—is this content crafty, silly, cute, joyful, or honest? If not, then maybe I can share it to my disappearing stories, or forgo a share entirely. Knowing your own guidelines can also be helpful for you when navigating what to share in moments of victory, tragedy, or other historic importance.

Ultimately, you don’t have to be an influencer or entrepreneur to curate your online presence effectively, because it’s about recognition more than growth. “It’s not about how much or how often to show up on social media,” notes Rachel Stiles, founder of Stage Creative Network (an online membership site for folks working in the theater space). Instead, it’s about “how to show up in a way that [you] actually enjoy creating a presence.” Ironically, Stiles notes, it’s this type of authenticity that the algorithms are learning to reward with better distribution.

And that visibility for who you are, my friends, is what leveling up is all about.

We’ve researched and personally tried dozens of the best online courses — these are our picks that are interesting, credible, and affordable too.

Many of us follow a pretty typical education trajectory: Elementary school, middle school, high school. Some of us go on to college or university, and others go even further, earning higher degrees and making careers in academia. No matter how far your formal education journey takes you, learning doesn’t have to stop there. We can continue learning — whether for career advancement or simply for fun.

Why consider online courses?

Online learning platforms offer lots of advantages for anyone looking to advance their career or learn something new. They are flexible and accessible in comparison to in person classes, as you’ll be able to access course materials anytime and anywhere you have access to a computer and an internet connection. Most online courses allow for self-paced learning, making it easier to commit and follow through with the workload as your personal schedule and priorities shift (here’s our tips on how to stay productive while learning remotely). You can even access online courses from institutions anywhere across the globe, allowing you to learn from top experts without having to leave your home.

You’ll find online courses are also more affordable than in-person lectures. By studying online, you’ll save tons of money that would typically be spent on commuting and accommodations. Online courses, by comparison, are also cheaper than traditional in-person classes, making it easier for you to advance your skills on your terms. Many courses also offer training on both broad and specialized areas that you typically might not find at a traditional educational institute. The best part is, once you successfully complete your online course, most platforms will present you with a certificate to show off your hard work and new skills!

That’s why we love these ten learning platforms that are leading the way in online education. These websites are free or low-cost and offer courses from a wide spectrum of topics like knife and cooking basics to graphic design and mobile development. For the tech lover, language learner, or aspiring artist, there’s something for everyone.

Our criteria:

Our editors have audited dozens of online courses and learning platforms and scoured thousands of customer reviews for this round-up of our favorite educational sites. Whether you’re looking to build professional skills, learn how to cook, or dive deep into new research, there are options on this list for you. Money affirmations can be used to connect us with these intentions and goals.

If you’re new to affirmations, think of them as ways of envisioning and creating positive feelings around a matter, or in this case, cash flow. Being rooted in worth, eradicating poor money habits, cultivating a sense of joy around money, and feeling comfortable with wealth are all important elements of the process.
