Summary: Cooking at home is my new favorite ritual, and Made In’s Stainless Steel and CeramiClad cookware made the transition effortless. After years of relying on takeout and trendy but short-lived pans, I was blown away by the Made In’s craftsmanship, nontoxic standards, and thoughtful design. Hosting friends for a dinner party with Made In cookware reminded me how good it feels to cook, connect, and create memories in my own kitchen.

What I Love:

  • Premium materials, pro-level performance: Made In’s Stainless Steel and CeramiClad lines are crafted in Italy and the USA using 5-ply stainless steel for even heating, incredible heat retention, and long-term durability.
  • Safe, non-toxic cookware: All pieces are third-party tested and made without PFAS, PFOA, PTFE, Lead, Cadmium, or BPA, a huge plus if you care about clean cooking.
  • Versatile and oven-safe: Stainless Clad pans can handle up to 800°F, and the CeramiClad non-stick up to 550°F, meaning you can easily go from stovetop to oven.
  • Beautiful design, built to last: The Limited Edition collection with Antique Brass Handles adds a timeless, elevated touch — equal parts functional and display-worthy. (And perfect for holiday gifting!)

Things To Note:

  • Care and maintenance: The stainless pieces are dishwasher-safe and clean up beautifully. Note that the CeramiClad pans are best washed by hand and stored carefully to prevent surface chips.
  • Investment worth making: With prices ranging from $349 to $799, these sets aren’t cheap, but their quality, longevity, and performance easily justify the cost — especially if you’re replacing cheaper pans every year.

It seems like everyone these days has some version of the same three goals: Be healthy, save money, and get offline. Funny enough, the answer to all three might just be hiding where we least expect: In our pots and pans.

I’ll admit, takeout has been my default these past few years. Living in LA, I’m spoiled with “healthy” options on every corner, but I still find myself wondering what’s actually in the food. And I honestly just feel better when I’m eating simple, home-cooked meals — fewer ingredients, less oil, no mystery sauces.

“I honestly just feel better when I’m eating simple, home-cooked meals — fewer ingredients, less oil, no mystery sauces.”

The money part doesn’t hurt either. Let’s be real: An Erewhon combo plate (one piece of salmon and two veggie sides) will now set you back around $38. I know…

So, cooking at home has been on my short list for a while — which is why I jumped at the chance to try out Made In Cookware.

I wouldn’t call myself a great cook (or a bad one either). I know how to follow recipes and can usually throw something together from the fridge. But getting closer to home-chef status takes the right mix of ingredients, creativity, time, skill — and, of course, cookware. Made In is known as “the cookware chefs actually use,” so it feels good to start my at-home cooking era with a solid foundation.

“Getting closer to home-chef status takes the right mix of ingredients, creativity, time, skill — and, of course, cookware.”

As a millennial woman, I’m constantly being targeted with “cute” pans that look great on my stove but don’t always hold up in the kitchen. That’s why I love that Made In isn’t just beautiful — it’s the real deal. Expertly crafted in the USA and Europe, made with the best raw materials, tested in world-class kitchens, and designed for actual cooking, not just the aesthetic. They also meet the world’s highest food safety and manufacturing standards… and in a world full of suspicious “non-stick,” that’s pretty important to me.

What really sets Made In apart is how open they are about their process, from their 100-year-old, family-owned roots in Boston to the factories they partner with across the U.S. and Europe. You can actually trace the origin of each piece and see the care that goes into it. There’s no influencer smoke and mirrors, no hidden endorsement deals. Just chefs and home cooks who genuinely use and love the products.

In a cookware world that often feels a little too much like Teflon — slick, shiny, and hard to trust — Made In’s transparency and craftsmanship truly stand out.

Three pans on a stovetop: one with cooked salmon fillets in herbs, one with sautéed zucchini and corn, and one with cooked pasta.
For an aspiring home chef, it was easy to see why Made In is the preferred brand for professional chefs.

Besides everyday cooking, my second culinary focus is being able to cook for friends. Since moving into my two-bedroom house a few years ago, it’s felt like I’m running a hotel (in the best, most fun way, of course). There’s almost always someone staying in the second bedroom, and over time, hosting has become one of my favorite parts of life. In a world full of screens, constant notifications, and endless news, getting together with friends feels like a little reset — a chance to be present, share some laughs, and just enjoy the moment.

“In a world full of screens, constant notifications, and endless news, getting together with friends feels like a little reset.”

The one challenge? I didn’t have enough cookware to actually make a meal for more than two people. So when I discovered Made In’s cookware sets, I knew they were the missing piece, the answer to finally being able to host the dinner parties I’d been dreaming about.

For this review, I tested 2 collections, and I’ve been cooking with these pieces for about 6 weeks now:

So let’s get into the review!

Shipping and delivery

My new cookware showed up fast, packed in sleek, branded boxes that were 100% recyclable and super easy to break down. Inside, everything was thoughtfully arranged — pans and lids snug in layered cardboard with clever cutouts to keep them protected. It felt like unboxing a gift (and would make an amazing one, too).

My dinner party dreams with The Limited Edition Stainless Clad Collection

The day my new cookware arrived, I had two guests staying with me, my besties Deb and Andrew, which felt like the perfect excuse to christen my new cookware with an impromptu dinner party.

After unboxing, we headed to McCall’s — one of my favorite neighborhood markets in LA — to grab ingredients for two dishes: Pan-Seared Halibut and Zucchini Ricotta Summer Pasta with Peas. By the time we got home, a few more friends had RSVP’d via text, so dinner for three quickly turned into dinner for six.

“I now get why chefs swear by these pieces.”

We put the new cookware to the test: The 2 QT Stainless Clad Saucepan, the 8 QT Stainless Clad Stock Pot, and the 10″ Stainless Clad Frying Pan. I now get why chefs swear by these pieces. Made In’s Stainless Clad line is completely coating-free and non-reactive, meaning zero leaching of metals or chemicals into your food.

Every piece is third-party tested by Light Labs and made without PFAS, PFOA, PTFE, Lead, Cadmium, or BPA, which made me feel even better about cooking for friends.

Each pan is crafted in Italy using premium 5-ply stainless steel — five layers that create incredible heat retention, even heating, and easy temperature control. The handles stayed cool on the stovetop and felt balanced in my hand. The walls are curved for deeper searing and easier flipping, and that rolled rim made pouring sauces effortless. Every piece can go from stovetop to oven up to 800 degrees.

“Each pan is crafted in Italy using premium 5-ply stainless steel — five layers that create incredible heat retention, even heating, and easy temperature control.”

I opted for the collection with Antique Brass Finished Handles, which adds a beautiful, elevated touch to my kitchen. I love pieces that feel like timeless classics rather than trends.

We followed a few of Made In’s cooking tips, which really helped us get the best results from each pan. First, in the 2 QT Saucepan, we preheated the pan for a couple of minutes before adding oil, then sautéed garlic until fragrant. We tossed in peas, zucchini, and a little corn — everything cooked evenly without sticking or scorching. Finally, we stirred in marinated feta to create a light, creamy sauce that coated the pasta beautifully.

Next, the 8 QT Stock Pot, we boiled a big pot of water for fresh pasta. The water came to a boil quickly, and the pasta cooked perfectly in just 3 minutes. We drained it, then poured it right back into the stock pot to eventually toss with the sauteed veggies, feta, and lemon zest, before serving straight from the stove.

Finally, for the halibut, we used the 10″ Frying Pan. Following Made In’s directions, we preheated the pan, added a drizzle of oil, then placed the fish — patted dry and seasoned simply with salt and pepper — into the pan. A few minutes on each side gave us that perfect golden crust, and a quick butter baste with lemon and thyme made it smell (and taste) heavenly. The fish was tender on the inside, crisp on the outside — even Andrew, who never eats fish, asked for seconds. That alone speaks volumes about the power of good ingredients and great cookware.

“A few minutes on each side gave us that perfect golden crust, and a quick butter baste with lemon and thyme made it smell (and taste) heavenly.”

We plated the meal with a side salad, and my friends — also self-proclaimed takeout people — were thrilled to have a home-cooked dinner. We lit candles, ate off my prized china collection (a birthday gift from Deb), and laughed while telling stories about our week.

After dinner, we gave everything a quick wash with warm water and popped the pans in the dishwasher. I love that they’re dishwasher-safe! The best part? Going to bed with no dirty dishes in the sink.

Every day made easy with CeramiClad™ Non Stick Frying Pan Set

Back to regularly scheduled eating — every morning, I make eggs. Usually with some sautéed veggies, plus a side of sauerkraut, avocado, and turkey sausage. As a single person, the CeramiClad 8” Frying Pan is the quickest way to cook breakfast and the perfect size for two eggs. Before, I only had a 10” pan, so I love the ease and control of this smaller size.

“As a single person, the CeramiClad 8” Frying Pan is the quickest way to cook breakfast and the perfect size for two eggs.”

Recently, my go-to breakfast has been thinly sliced zucchini, crisped in a little olive oil, with two sunny-side-up eggs cooked right on top. When the whites are mostly set, I add a splash of water and cover the pan with my 8” Stainless Steel lid to let the steam finish them off. The result? Perfect eggs with jammy yolks and golden zucchini underneath.

If you’re a lazy cook like me, non-stick is essential for quick, everyday meals — but some coatings can be toxic and leach into your food. Made In’s pans don’t. The CeramiClad collection pairs their award-winning 5-ply Stainless Clad base with a high-performance, American-made non-stick ceramic for a clean-eating, even-heating pan you can rely on daily.

The pans are handcrafted in the USA, and the handles stay cool on the stovetop while feeling balanced and ergonomic. The stainless steel base works on all cooktops — gas, electric, or induction — and they’re oven-safe up to 550°F. Like all Made In cookware, every piece is third-party tested and made without PFAS, PFOA, PTFE, Lead, Cadmium, or BPA.

And while the 8” pan has become my weekday go-to, I already have big plans for the larger sizes. I’m staying in LA for Thanksgiving this year, and one of my best friends (also named Grace!) will be in town for a month. We’re planning a pancake Friendsgiving, and I can’t wait to see how my favorite gluten-free pancake mix from Honey Hi x CAP Beauty turns out on the non-stick pans.

“The pans are handcrafted in the USA, and the handles stay cool on the stovetop while feeling balanced and ergonomic.”

These pans need to be hand-washed to maintain their non-stick nature, but they are easy to clean and get food off of, so I don’t mind. I have noticed a few tiny chips in the non-stick from stacking the pans, but nothing that affects my cooking! (And Made In does sell pan protectors to prevent this. They’ve thought of everything.)

Is Made In worth the investment?

When it comes to buying cookware sets, you’re going to spend more upfront. Think of it as investing in your kitchen and in the way you cook. But here’s the thing: If you go for high-quality pieces, you won’t have to keep replacing them every year, which actually saves you money in the long run. I’ve learned this the hard way. Over the past four years, I’ve gone through at least four of those trendy, colorful non-stick pans… ringing up around $150 each. One by one, the non-stick wore off, and then I was back to square one.

“If you go for high-quality pieces, you won’t have to keep replacing them every year, which actually saves you money in the long run.”

Made In’s Limited Edition Stainless Clad Collection ($799) gives you a complete kitchen foundation: Saucepans, stock pots, and frying pans designed to be used for years, not replaced every season. If you prefer non-stick, the CeramiClad Non-Stick Frying Pan Set ($349) offers the same durability with a safer, long-lasting ceramic coating.

For me, investing in these sets isn’t just about the cookware itself. It’s about setting up a kitchen I can rely on, whether I’m cooking for one or hosting friends. Paying more up front means fewer replacements, better food, and saving money and time on replacements.

In the end, Made In made cooking easier for me — and more fun. That first dinner party set the tone, turning my cookware into keepsakes tied to memories. It’s safe to say my home-cooking era is officially underway. 👩‍🍳

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

Our team of editors has spent the last twelve years testing the best non toxic mattresses across price points. These are our top selections in 2026.

We spend nearly a third of our lives sleeping — and there’s no better place to invest in our well-being! 😴

Over the last decade, our editorial team has reviewed dozens of organic and non toxic mattresses in our own homes and with our own families. In addition to hands-on testing, we regularly tour mattress factories in person, investigate proper certification and material use, interview the brands’ leadership teams, scour online reviews, and annually survey our audience for up-to-date consumer preferences.

Why choose an organic mattress?

Organic mattresses use certified organic materials, including natural wool, latex, and cotton. They avoid the risks of harmful substances that may harm immunity, hormone health, and the nervous system. “Repeated exposure to harmful chemicals in some traditional mattresses can impact your health, starting with how well you sleep. Some of these chemicals can contribute to symptoms including skin and respiratory irritation, hormone disruption, effects on your nervous system, and even impaired immune function,” emphasizes Dr. Jaclyn Tolentino. Having a safer sleep environment is especially important to vulnerable sleepers like young children, as 2025 research published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology shows.

Organic materials and production practices also ensure a more eco-friendly environmental impact. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the primary global body that governs a rigorous certification process for organic fibers, but we’ve outlined all the relevant organic certifications. While many companies may use words like “natural” and ”organic” as unfounded marketing terms, less than 2% of mattresses on the market actually receive organic certifications.

What Does “Non Toxic” Actually Mean?

You’ll often find brands touting the use of non toxic materials — but that doesn’t actually promise us anything. This is a form of greenwashing, which, as clean living expert Lindsay Dahl explains in her book Cleaning House, is a marketing tactic brands use to persuade customers that the product is safe for their homes.

“‘Nature-made’ or ‘non toxic’ or ‘clean’ doesn’t mean that any criteria were met for quality or safety,” writes Dahl. “It’s simply language that makes the customer think that the product is harmless and good for them.”

Instead, what’s most important is the certifications behind the claims, like GOTS, GOLS, and UL GREENGUARD Gold, and many more listed below, that are verified by third party testing and review. So, while “non toxic” isn’t inherently a bad word or descriptor, it’s not enough to guarantee that the mattress you buy is truly sustainable or organic.

What is our review process?

10 testers

90+ nights tested per mattress

3 sleep experts

6 factory tours

1,200 the good trade readers surveyed

Each mattress on this list has been individually reviewed by one of our editors. Unlike other review sites, we don’t order mattresses to a showroom; we actually bring these beds into our homes and sleep on them for months (or years!) to test long-term comfort and durability. Our top considerations are health and safety, comfort, environmental impact, durability, and long-term value. In addition to hands-on testing, we regularly tour mattress factories, investigate certifications, interview brands, scour online reviews, and survey our own readers for your preferences.

Rest assured, every non toxic mattress on this list has received rigorous certifications for safety and eco-friendly production and has been tested firsthand by one or more of our editors. This guide has also been medically reviewed by Dr. Jaclyn Tolentino, a board-certified family physician.

Our criteria:

  • ORGANIC CERTIFICATIONS | Every mattress on this list has received rigorous certifications for safe materials and eco-friendly production; each brand’s specific certifications are listed in the icon section above their feature. None of the mattresses on this list contain harsh flame retardants, and all are free from toxic chemicals, PFAS, VOCs, and fiberglass.
  • COMFORT | Comfort is key, so we try each mattress ourselves, spend hours scouring online reviews, and represent all the feedback from our readers that we collect through surveys, comments, and emails. The brands on this list are here because they are organic and people love to sleep on them.
  • AFFORDABLE | Every brand on this list sells directly to the consumer online and ships the mattress to your home, removing retail costs and reducing the final price. We’ve provided a range of options, from budget to luxury, without compromising safety.
  • ECO-FRIENDLY & GIVE BACK | All of the brands on this list employ eco-friendly production practices that help reduce water pollution, sequester carbon in the soil, and support biodiversity. Many of these companies also give back to their communities by donating high-quality organic mattresses to housing shelters and families in need.

In a marketplace filled with greenwashing and white-labeled beds, Avocado stands apart by owning its entire supply chain while meeting the most rigorous standards for health and sustainability. Each organic mattress is handmade in California using GOTS-certified organic cotton and wool from India, and GOLS-certified organic latex from India and Guatemala. Some premium models even include plush FSC-certified Pure Talalay latex. Every Avocado mattress is GREENGUARD Gold Certified for low emissions and built for a wide range of sleepers — from side to stomach to back.

Our editors have personally reviewed the flagship mattress, the luxurious plush mattress, the budget-friendly Eco Organic mattress, and the popular Eco Organic Kids Mattress.

This year, our team of editors visited the Avocado mattress facility in Fullerton, CA, where we joined the co-CEO of Avocado Green Brands, Vy Nguyen, for a tour to see how these mattresses get made. We also saw a demo of hand needle-tufting, where long steel needles thread cotton straps through the mattress to secure the layers in place without glue. It’s a highly skilled, time-intensive process that keeps natural materials from shifting and improves durability.

Kayti Christian has long brown hair and bangs, wearing a black turtleneck and hoop earrings, smiles softly in front of a plain background.

Our Editor’s Review of Avocado

“Somewhere between entering my 30s and settling into the city I plan to call home for the foreseeable future, I realized I needed to stop buying Ikea mattresses off Craigslist. I ultimately decided on Avocado’s Pillow-Top mattress (featuring a Euro-style button-tufted pillow top) since my husband and I are both side sleepers. It’s an added expense but ultimately worth it, in my opinion, since you don’t need to add your own topper. I felt supported and snuggled in. […] Since receiving the Green Mattress, I’ve been getting better rest, and my sleep scores have reflected that. My chiropractor has noticed my spine health is looking great, too. My husband loves the mattress as well, and he’s a hard sell when it comes to mattresses and pillows!”

Birch’s non toxic and organic mattress may just be the coziest mattress ever. The NYC-based brand boasts OEKO-TEX and Rainforest Alliance certifications and, for every mattress sold, Birch plants one tree through the National Forest Foundation. This green mattress is made with organic, natural, hypoallergenic, and anti-microbial materials, including a natural cotton cover, hygroscopic wool (from New Zealand), and sustainably-tapped latex to keep even the warmest sleeper cool. For support, the individually wrapped steel coils (steel made in the USA) offer extra comfort and optimized pressure relief. We’ve personally tested this mattress and found it soft and springy, while still feeling supportive (see that it’s a medium firmness) and offering excellent edge support. We especially love the support of the Birch Luxe! With all its awards and natural mattress components, Birch makes it easy to sleep soundly and safely.

Our Editorial Director, Emily, visited the 3Z manufacturing facility in early 2024 and got to see firsthand how Birch mattresses are made from start to finish. John Merwin, the CEO of 3Z and founder of Brooklyn Bedding led the tour for a select group of editors, answering our questions and even letting us get hands-on experience sewing edge seams on tufted mattress covers. (Did you know they pour their foam and make all their springs in-house? It’s quite the production!)

Randi Donahue is a woman with brown hair in a pink top sits near a window, reflecting on her latest mattress review, as a plant thrives in the background.

Our Editor’s Review of Birch

“After months of sleeping on our Birch Luxe mattress, my husband and I are well-rested and clear on what we’ve missed out on all these years. We are delighted with this mattress; our 8 and 10-year-old daughters agree. […] My only issue was the edge of the mattress, in other words the full perimeter reinforcement, was flipped up, almost like a lip around the edge of the bed; I believe it was still from the way it was shipped because it has since relaxed a bit, or at least I’ve gotten used to it now. This mattress helps me sleep better, so much so that I’ve gone from avoiding bedtime to looking forward to it. Now, I just have a more challenging time getting up. In addition to deeper, better-quality sleep, I’ve also noticed my body feels refreshed and ache-free. I also went from a restless side sleeper to a comfy combo sleeper — spending a good part of the night on my back and sans any pillow between my knees.”

PlushBeds is a leading online luxury mattress manufacturer and retailer, specializing in organic mattresses and non toxic bedding. All products are handcrafted in their GOLS and GOTS-certified organic production facility in California, with free shipping within the contiguous USA. Our Editorial Director, Emily, visited the PlushBeds facility in Camarillo, California, where she learned about how much the brand’s quality ethos is inspired by the most legacy mattress makers in Europe — and how, at the end of the day, quality is the name of the game. The company offers a thorough selection of certified organic and eco-friendly mattresses at accessible prices, especially through key holidays, so keep an eye out for their promotions (although the brand also has luxury mattresses at top-tier price points — trust us, we’ve experienced them firsthand and the quality is unmatched). Each of the brand’s mattresses is GREENGUARD Gold Certified, ensuring your bed has met some of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low chemical emissions (plus, the brand never uses PFAS in its production). The company also provides environmental scholarships for college students, gives back to environmental and social nonprofits, and offsets 100% of its carbon emissions via TerraPass. For side sleepers like us, PlushBeds’ memory foam options are among the best non toxic mattresses. It doesn’t give us too much — or too little — firmness. Medium is just right!

Kate Arceo, a woman with long brown hair smiles while wearing a white top.

Our Editor’s Review of PlushBeds

“After our first night of sleep on our Signature Bliss mattress, I noticed it was the first morning in weeks that I’d woken up without any aches and pains. Sometimes I’m not aware I’m not sleeping well until I get one really good night of sleep — anyone else? That’s how this particular morning was. Noticing how deeply I’d slept made me realize how poorly I’d been sleeping leading up until that point. […] Another noteworthy anecdote: Since sleeping on our new mattress, I’ve noticed a significant reduction in motion transfer. With a husband who tosses and turns and two little children who occasionally end up in between us, more nights than not I can feel at least one family member or another shifting around in our bed […] since upgrading to our PlushBeds mattress, the motion transfer is at an all-time low.”

Bear’s mattresses are GREENGUARD Gold and CertiPUR-US certified, ensuring low VOCs and beds that are free from toxic chemicals and harsh flame retardants. The Bear Natural offers a cozy pillowtop feel on a firm base, making it a good option for people who toss and turn, since there’s low motion transfer. While most Bear models don’t offer the same organic certifications as the top three selections on this list, we still recommend it for its safety certifications and accessible price point.

Emily McGowan has short, light pink and blonde hair, and smiles, wearing a dark green top and a necklace.

Our Editor’s Review of Bear

“I’ve always been an unfussy sleeper, but something has changed this year as I barrel toward my 35th birthday: I am now a hot sleeper. So while there was a bit of an adjustment period with the deep tufts on the Bear Elite, they provide airflow underneath me and help alleviate my night sweats — a worthwhile tradeoff if you ask me. The cushy top offers softness without sacrificing stability, and I’ve noticed that I stay asleep more consistently throughout the night, without the anxious wakeups. If you’re looking for a range of fully organic certifications, you might want to check elsewhere; however, Bear mattresses are GREENGUARD Gold Certified, and made with CertiPUR-US® certified foams. As someone who is currently prioritizing performance, this aligns with my values!”

Purchasing a non toxic mattress is an investment, and it can feel daunting. But Awara makes it easy to take the leap with a 365-night trial, premium customer service, and a forever warranty. Our editor took the plunge with an Awara (and in her dream size, the Cal King!), and she and her husband have slept like babies and never looked back.

We love Awara’s natural luxury hybrid mattress for its breathability and organic components, as well as the nine-inch contouring support core for pressure relief. It’s firm yet plush, and we feel confident that the mattress is supporting our bodies and promoting a healthy night’s sleep. Its ability to keep hot sleepers cool at night is outstanding (hello, fellow sweaty sleepers! 👋), the latex is breathable, and the coils boost airflow. The mattress arrives at your door in a cardboard box, and it’s as easy as rolling it out and using the fabric handles to place it on your bed frame for a supremely cool and comfortable night’s sleep.

Langa Chinyoka has long braided hair, wears a white T-shirt and stands in front of a bookshelf.

Our Editor’s Review of Awara

I like a firm mattress, so the Awara mattress was perfect for me. It had just enough give (admittedly, I did do a bounce test and it passed with flying colors) while retaining its shape. I’ve been a tosser and turner my whole life, but I slept like a stone on my Awara. From someone who has been called a restless sleeper by everyone I have shared a bed with, this was a monumental achievement. If you prefer an ultra-plush feel, you might find the Awara too firm, even after you’ve slept on it for weeks or months. But for hot sleepers, I can’t recommend the Awara mattress enough. Is this how everyone else has been living during hot summers? I can’t believe cool sleepers have been gatekeeping this from me my whole life.”

Our Editor’s Review of Brentwood Home

“Brentwood Home’s Oceano mattress is medium soft, rated a 4.5/10, but with reinforcement from springs and edge protection. […] I have fewer aches and pains, and I feel so much more comfortable throughout the night. It’s brought me back to a sense of comfort that I thought I left behind in childhood. One thing to note is that this mattress measures in at 14 inches tall, adding 3+ inches to our existing setup. We might have to rethink our current platform bed frame, but it’s more than worth it!”

Saatva’s disruptive model extends beyond distribution: its non toxic mattresses are made with plant-based, eco-friendly materials and crafted in the USA. The company also gives back by donating hundreds of natural mattresses to high-need organizations nationwide.

Several of our editors rave about the luxury innerspring mattress — it’s their forever pick. For a memory foam mattress comparable to iComfort and Tempur-Pedic (but at a fraction of the cost), we love Loom & Leaf, Saatva’s memory foam line. While memory foam is not an all-natural material, these mattresses are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning the foam is low in VOCs. For a latex option, Saatva’s Zenhaven Mattress is 100% all-natural Talalay latex, which is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to mold, microbes, and dust mites. The Talalay manufacturing process is entirely water-based, minimizing the amount of environmentally harmful byproducts.

Trinity Wilbourn has wavy hair, and is wearing a white top and necklaces, gazes upward thoughtfully.

Our Editor’s Review of Saatva

“Saatva’s Classic Mattress in Luxury Firm features a patented Lumbar Zone® Technology and responsive dual-coil design made of recycled carbon steel meaning it’s super supportive and will never sag. Nowadays, when I wake up in the morning, I am neither creaky nor cranky and my lower back pain is gone. I recommend this mattress if you suffer from back pain, are a side sleeper who prefers a firmer option, or you want to win at life! If you want a super squishy mattress, or something super firm, you’ll want to opt for a different firmness and perhaps a different mattress altogether.

Courtney Jay Higgins has wavy, shoulder-length hair and wears a rust-colored top and a green scarf, smiling at the camera.

Our Editor’s Review of Leesa

“After sleeping on it for a couple of weeks, our Leesa x West Elm Natural Hybrid Mattress feels even more comfortable and slightly contoured to our bodies. My husband and I have both been sleeping more soundly, and any of those minor neck or shoulder pains we’ve had have gone away (!). We credit this to the uniquely designed, individually encased springs. They adjust to the body during the night, so you’re supported in any position you find yourself in. I’ve found it makes a huge difference in how good I’m feeling in my body during the day. This mattress is considered medium-firm due to the supportive spring interior, but it feels more plush overall. If you’re looking for an extra firm mattress, this could be too soft.

Our Editor’s Review of My Green Mattress

“The Pure Eco mattress has just enough plushness on top to give that delicious, sinking-into-a-cloud feeling without being a bean bag that destroys your back. The feeling of this mattress is on par with memory foam, only it’s not made of the synthetic, chemical stuff. Instead, this mattress features a pocketed coil spring system that provides added lumbar and edge support designed for overall comfort for kids and adults up to 400 lbs. The 1 1/4″ layer of GOTS-certified organic and OEKO-TEX certified dunlop latex gives that sink-your-toes-in feeling while being eco-friendly and PFAS-free. Founded specifically with family-safe, non toxic materials in mind, Naturepedic has been one of the leaders in the organic mattress space for over 20 years. With a range of options, including mattresses for kids, vegan mattresses, as well as luxury customizable and split mattress options, we can see why the brand is so well-loved. Naturepedic mattresses are particularly favorites for hot sleepers and folks who are sensitive to smells or have allergies, thanks to being hypoallergenic. Plus, all of their mattresses are formaldehyde-free and made without PFAS or chemical flame retardants while still maintaining flammability standards. (Psst — the brand’s crib mattresses are waterproof without the use of harmful chemicals, too!)

While Naturepedic mattresses do run on the more expensive side, you can count on the fact that you’re getting one of the best non toxic mattresses, made responsibly and sustainably in the USA, that will last you decades.

Brianna Schubert has glasses and a striped shirt, and is sitting on a bed, thoughtfully resting an arm on their chin.

Our Editor’s Review of Naturepedic

“In my research, I found the hypoallergenic properties of latex mattresses are good for people who are sensitive to smells and have allergies (aka me). Since switching to Naturepedic, my sleep has been great (and my fiancé reported his sleep has improved too!). We both noticed the lack of motion transfer — feeling each other move in the middle of the night — and loved the luxury feel of it. And when I had a two-day migraine, it was fantastic to have a mattress that kept me cool and supported my head, neck, and back while I rested — especially because I feel extra sensitive to pressure, heat, and other stimuli during those times. Drawbacks include the high price tag and the fact that this mattress is quite heavy, so find some help for bringing it in, unboxing it, and setting it up!”

Our editors’ top considerations when shopping for an organic mattress:

There are now over 175 bed-in-a-box mattress brands to choose from 🤯. Selecting a new mattress is totally daunting! Especially since, as Dr. Matthew Walker, Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley writes, “[S]leep is the single most effective thing we can do to reset our brain and body health each day.” Mattress shopping is an incredibly personal decision — and a steep investment — so it’s important to find the perfect fit. (Of course, our favorite brands listed above offer sleep trials to make sure you’re completely satisfied, but it’s never fun having to coordinate the return of a mattress that didn’t work out for you.) Here’s a look at what factors you might consider depending on the type of sleep preferences you have!

As Dr. Michael Breus, clinical psychologist and sleep medicine expert, notes: “When putting together the ideal sleep environment, it’s not just about optimizing temperature, humidity, noise, and light. Having the right mattress, pillows, and bedding can also help you feel relaxed and ready for a good night’s rest.”

Start your search with a budget and mattress size in mind, which may help you narrow down the type of mattress within your price range before considering other factors. We’ve listed the types of mattresses below in order from least expensive to most expensive.

When do you know it’s time to get a new mattress?

Most mainstream mattresses will last 7–10 years in your home, but there are a few other indicators that might mean it’s time to get a new one. First, inspect your mattress for visible wear and tear — are there any points that sag, or new lumps that aren’t supposed to be there? Does the mattress squeak or creak when you roll over on it? Then, consider the quality of your sleep in the past few months. New aches and pains (especially in your shoulders, neck, and back), increased allergy sensitivities, or poor sleep quality in general might indicate that it’s time to get shopping. And, maybe, even make an upgrade to an organic mattress!

Which type of mattress should you choose?

  • Innerspring mattresses are ideal for people who prefer a more traditional mattress feel (think: a little bouncy), and for folks who tend to sleep hot thanks to the good airflow around the springs.
    • Pros: Often more affordable, supportive, and breathable
    • Cons: You might notice squeaking or creaking, there’s not much motion isolation (so you’ll feel it if your partner tosses and turns), and innerspring mattresses may wear out faster than other types
  • Memory Foam mattresses are excellent for side sleepers and people who deal with joint pain. The foam offers greater motion isolation than innersprings do, which means you won’t wake up if your bedmate moves or gets up a lot.
    • Pros: Contours to your body, offering motion isolation and pressure relief
    • Cons: Can retain heat (watch out, hot sleepers), and depending on the materials, you might experience off-gassing odors
  • Hybrid mattresses offer a balance of innerspring and foam mattresses. We think of them as the “Goldilocks beds” because they’re just right for a wide range of people. You’ll get support and comfort no matter how you sleep (especially if you sleep in multiple positions!).
    • Pros: A balance of support and comfort (not too firm or soft)
    • Cons: Can be heavy depending on the materials used, and more expensive because of the multiple components
  • Latex mattresses offer similar contouring and support to memory foam, making them a good choice for people sensitive to odors or with allergies. Latex is also naturally well-ventilated, making it a great choice for hot sleepers. And, of course, latex is a natural material, so you can feel better about the eco-impact of your mattress. You can find a complete list of all-latex mattresses here. Both Dunlop and Talalay latex are good options — because of their different production methods, Dunlop will be more dense and Talalay will tend to be lighter and bouncier. Dunlop latex can be made with all-natural materials, unlike Talalay, which needs synthetic additives, which means Dunlop latex is the only option that can receive an organic certification.
    • Pros: Hypoallergenic, responsive without being too bouncy (or making you feel like you’ve sunk into quicksand, like some memory foam), and has impressive durability for many years of use
    • Cons: All-natural latex mattresses can get very heavy if they’re not mixed with other materials and often carry the highest price tags

Which firmness should you look for?

  • Back Sleepers typically enjoy medium-firm to firm mattresses. For support and spinal alignment, look for memory foam, latex, and firmer hybrid mattresses.
  • Side Sleepers will typically sleep well on soft to medium mattresses. Look for softer memory foam and hybrid mattresses to relieve pressure on your shoulders and hips.
  • Stomach Sleepers will likely snooze best on firm mattresses. Look for firm innerspring and foam mattresses that reduce sinking so you can keep your spinal alignment.
  • What if you’re not sure? You can tell if a mattress is too soft for your needs if you feel stuck or unsupported, experience back pain or stiffness, or overheat due to sinking in too much. If a mattress is too firm, you’ll notice aching in your pressure points like hips, shoulders, and knees (or even numbness or tingling). You might also notice that you toss and turn when you’re trying to sleep, or that there’s a large gap under your lower back when you lay flat on the bed.

Other important considerations when choosing a mattress:

  • Are you a sweaty sleeper? Hot sleepers will like the breathability of latex, hybrid, and innerspring mattresses. If you do opt for foam, look for gel-infused or open-cell foam for extra airflow. If looking into hybrid mattresses, we recommend looking for ones with natural fabrics in the top layers — like organic cotton, wool, and natural latex.
  • For cold sleepers, beds that you sink into will cover a larger surface area of your body (so think soft!), and you’ll benefit from the heat retention qualities of memory foam and other foam mattresses.
  • If you snore, consider mattresses compatible with adjustable bed frames to elevate your head and improve airflow. Research has shown that even a 12-degree incline can be an unobtrusive way to reduce snoring and help you sleep through the night.
  • If you have allergies, consider hypoallergenic mattresses made from organic latex and bamboo viscose or rayon. These materials also help protect against dust mites!
  • Consider your preference between hand-tufting and other methods of layer bonding, such as glue. Some brands may use glues that won’t last as long as a quality tuft, or may contain toxic ingredients that you don’t want in your mattress.
  • Warranties typically cover factory defects but may not cover standard wear and tear. Check with your mattress maker before deciding to see if you’ll be covered down the line if the mattress wears in ways you don’t like!
  • If you tend to roll around a bit at night or want to maximize the usable surface of your mattress, look for models that offer a high level of edge support, which can help keep you on the bed. This is also handy if you have mobility issues and need extra firmness when getting out of bed in the morning.

What certifications ensure a mattress is organic or non toxic?

While there are a range of natural materials that offer non toxic sleep, we look for brands that carry additional certifications to ensure their mattresses are as safe as they claim to be. Here are the certifications we look for when evaluating organic (and sustainable) mattresses.

  • GOTS Certified: The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the gold standard for organic cotton, wool, and other textile components. Only textile products made from 95% certified organic raw materials can become GOTS Certified. There are also stringent worker protections that ban exposure to toxic chemicals and child or forced labor. Because GOTS’ rigorous certification requires environmental and social criteria across the entire textile supply chain, it is the gold standard for ensuring health and safety.
  • GOLS Certified: The Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) ensures that the latex in your mattress (and pillows) contains more than 95% of certified organic raw material. Similar to GOTS, GOLS also requires both environmental and social criteria throughout the entire textile supply chain.
  • MADE SAFE: MADE SAFE is a non toxic certification for everyday products, like mattresses, bedding, and skincare. This certification is extremely stringent, and every product is screened to validate that over 6,500 substances on the banned and restricted list have been avoided or constrained, eliminating the worst hazards commonly found in products used in our homes and daily routines.
  • GREENGUARD Certified: A GREENGUARD Certification means that your mattress meets some of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into indoor air. GREENGUARD Gold certification ensures the lowest emissions and off-gassing (making it especially good for folks who might be extra sensitive).
  • OEKO-TEX Certified: OEKO-TEX is a consistent, independent testing and certification system that ensures every component in a mattress is free from harmful substances (from raw materials to the final product).
  • CertiPUR-US: While CertiPUR-US doesn’t consider organic or natural materials, it does set a non toxic standard for the flexible polyurethane foam used in many hybrid and memory foam mattresses. This certification ensures that foams meet safety standards and are free of ozone-depleting substances, flame retardants, mercury, lead, formaldehyde, and phthalates, and have low VOC emissions.
  • B Corporation: B Corporations meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. Organizations must be verified through B Lab, a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring a fair and sustainable global economy to become a B Corp.
  • Climate Neutral Certified: Climate Neutral Certified brands measure and offset their entire carbon footprint and implement plans to reduce future emissions — we look for these when searching for more sustainable options. Some companies even claim to be carbon-negative by removing more carbon than they emit, although that is not an official certification.
  • Fair Trade Certification: One of the most rigorous social standards, the Fair Trade certification means that materials are sourced ethically and workers are paid fair wages.
  • USDA Certified Organic: The USDA Organic seal assures consumers that raw materials like cotton or wool are 95% or more organic. This seal does not cover any chemicals used in the production process, or the entire mattress like GOTS does.
  • eco-INSTITUT Certification: The eco-INSTITUT label is awarded to mattresses that have been tested for harmful substances, odors, and emissions in order to ensure healthier indoor air quality.
  • FSC Certified: The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) examines wood components like bed frames, as well as paper packaging materials. This certification ensures that these products come from responsibly managed forests.
  • PETA-Approved Vegan: The PETA-Approved Vegan certification assures shoppers that no animal products were used in the manufacturing process (such as wool, down, or leather). Many organizations offer other vegan certifications, too, like the Vegan Action certification. Just make sure that the entire mattress is vegan — not just a handful of the components.
  • 1% for the Planet: Members of 1% for the Planet donate 1% of annual sales to environmental causes, which is a bonus when we’re looking for sustainable bedding options.

What are common harmful substances found in traditional mattresses?

While you can find more affordable mattresses than the options on this list, it’s important to recognize that not all mattresses are created equal. Most conventional mattresses available online and in-store contain harmful substances that affect your home’s air quality and your health through chronic, long-term exposure. Here are a few to look out for:

  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are gases emitted from certain solids or liquids, including many synthetic materials used in mattresses. (They’re also common in paints!) VOCs have health impacts ranging from mild irritation and nausea to liver, kidney, and central nervous system damage. Some VOCs are even known carcinogens.
  • Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals used in some mattresses and furniture for their water and stain-resistant properties. Research on these “forever chemicals” by the CDC and the EPA has linked PFAS to liver damage, thyroid disease, decreased fertility, high cholesterol, obesity, hormone suppression, and cancer.
  • Chemical flame retardants, like brominated or halogenated flame retardants, are added to mattresses to ensure they meet fire safety standards. These flame retardants have been linked to health issues such as endocrine disruption, neurodevelopmental issues, and cancer, especially in vulnerable populations like infants or the elderly.
  • Fiberglass is used in some mattresses as an inexpensive flame retardant, but fiberglass fibers can be released into the air and environment if the mattress cover is removed or torn. Aside from short-term irritation, chronic inhalation of fiberglass can worsen respiratory conditions like asthma or bronchitis.
  • Polyurethane is a commonly used foam in mattresses, but it can release VOCs through off-gassing. (That new mattress smell? It might be the polyurethane!) This can cause respiratory irritation and headaches, and some research suggests potential endocrine disruption.

What is greenwashing?

Greenwashing is the practice of a company claiming to be more environmentally friendly—or non toxic—than it really is, often through misleading marketing language. This is particularly prevalent in the mattress industry, so our reviews focus only on brands that hold trusted third-party certifications like those listed above. Not every mattress will be perfect, but when it comes to such big investments in our daily routines and well-being, we want to know that the brands are accountable to outside sources for their claims about non toxic materials and sustainable production.

How to care for an organic mattress (and why they last longer!)

A mattress can be a steep investment — especially when you opt for an organic or natural one. But the perks of a well-crafted mattress include longevity: many of our favorite mattresses last 25+ years while maintaining quality and comfort. (And, compared to more “mainstream” brands that release more VOCs and can crumble as they age, you won’t get that funky smell or degradation with natural mattresses). That doesn’t mean you don’t have any upkeep; in order to keep your mattress cozy for the long haul, here’s how to best take care of it:

  • Always use a mattress protector to prevent spills from absorbing into the mattress (the number of times we’ve spilled coffee in bed has taught us this lesson firsthand).
  • Rotate and flip the mattress according to the manufacturer’s suggested timeline. Each timeline may differ, but the standard is to rotate once every three to six months.
  • Snuggle up with natural and organic bedding to get the most breathability out of your new mattress — it’s a game-changer!
  • Clean spills immediately (and use a mattress protector, as noted above) to keep your mattress dry and mold-free. If you live in a humid environment, consider getting a dehumidifier to reduce moisture retention.

How long will an organic mattress last?

Standard mattresses have a 7-10 year lifespan, but many organic options on our list feature lifespans of 25 years and longer! Some even offer lifetime warranties; that’s how deeply the brand stands behind their product. Review each brand’s recommendations for how frequently to replace your mattress, but know that generally, the higher the investment, the longer the mattress should last.

How does The Good Trade’s editorial team review mattresses?

The Good Trade’s editors are a diverse team of writers and sustainable product enthusiasts who offer trusted brand recommendations based on our hands-on testing and extensive research, including third-party verifications, certifications, and accreditations. We rigorously test the products featured in our guides so we can provide you with sincere recommendations that meet our standards for sustainability and health.

We’ve slept on mattresses from these brands for over ten years, and have recommended them to friends and family based on our own experience. Additionally, we’ve met with the teams of each and every brand — often the founders and makers of the mattresses — and even toured massive mattress manufacturing facilities to see just how each mattress is made. We’re especially proud to be able to offer direct feedback to each brand to push their sustainability and non toxic certifications further to ensure our readers can *actually* get a healthier night’s sleep.

We’ve also personally tested and reviewed the best organic bedding brands, including mattress toppers, protectors, and pillows, so you can make the most informed decision. If you have any questions or are in search of a recommendation, drop a note in the comments, and we’ll point you in the right direction!

Editor’s note: This piece was originally published in March of 2016 and is updated monthly to feature new products, prices, certifications, and new brands based on our reviews. The current content reflects our most recent evaluations of the best organic mattresses on the market.

I handed my credit card to the waiter as a delightful dinner with two of my close friends concluded. The meal was nothing particularly extravagant, but dining out is always more costly than cooking at home, and this was the third time within a week that I found myself paying a financial price for some quality friend time.

As I looked across the table at the bowed heads of my friends scribbling tips onto their receipts, I was momentarily transported back in time to seeing those same heads bowed over a group project in high school. We saw each other for hours nearly every day when we were classmates. Nothing was formal or curated. The friendships were birthed through repetitive days, months, and years together within the simultaneously mundane and thrilling framework of teenage life.

“I would never have imagined that some of my closest friendships would one day be confined to a small blue rectangle on my Google calendar every other month.”

Spending time with friends used to be as free as it was frequent. From sitting next to each other in class to making friends at poorly paying first jobs and internships, there was a daily opportunity for connection that I naively took for granted. I would never have imagined that some of my closest friendships would one day be confined to a small blue rectangle on my Google calendar every other month. As the years have gone by, our paychecks and offices have grown while our capacity for regular informal connection has shrunk.

I’m tremendously grateful for the privilege of having a budget for friend dates, but the cost of brunch, dinner, and drinks (let alone bigger trips or weekends away) add up quickly for all parties involved. This can present relational challenges when friends are inevitably in different life stages with varying income levels and responsibilities. Finances aside, after a few years of meeting up every so often to swap stories over entrèes, it can begin to feel as though our adult relationships orbit primarily around discussing old memories rather than making new ones.

“While there’s nothing wrong with conversation over tasty food (two of my favorite things in life), the context does have its limits.”

While there’s nothing wrong with conversation over tasty food (two of my favorite things in life), the context does have its limits. I think there’s a reason that first dates typically start in these settings, and then stronger romantic relationships slowly shift into simply living life and doing chores together. It’s not because we like the person any less — quite the contrary! It’s because the intimacy of sharing everyday life is the ultimate trusting relational environment.

Ironically, friendships often reverse this trajectory. We make new friends in casual everyday settings such as high school or college, the workplace or gym. Then, once that contextual container dissolves, we tend to revert to the “first few dates” behavior. We text to coordinate a time and place, meet up to chat, split the bill, and go home to our real lives.

While there’s seemingly no escape from the logistical scheduling required to maintain adult friendships, I’m finding that time with friends in situations requiring no funding can generate stronger bonds. When we invest our energy, instead of our dollars, into tasks or activities with companions, a sort of magic unfolds.

“When we invest our energy, instead of our dollars, into tasks or activities with companions, a sort of magic unfolds.”

Most of my favorite memories with adult friends are the ones in which our real lives intersected without any glamor: Helping a longtime bestie move into her first home, laughing alongside a girlfriend when my car broke down in the middle of a long drive-through vaccination line, realizing how little we knew about horticulture while volunteering together at a justice-centered local farm. Each of these situations alchemized from inconvenience or embarrassment into a cherished memory because of the friend who physically shared the moment with me. We created a new story together instead of simply swapping old ones.

The only way to create space for transforming the mundane into magic is to meet one another in the reality of everyday life. We make space for fresh perspectives when we bring others into our little world, and we learn more about theirs than we ever could by exchanging words or splitting tabs. In a digital era, this simple, tangible approach to friendship can feel challenging, but there are countless ways to integrate friends into your daily life.

Ways to actively spend time with friends at home:

  • Make a meal you’ve never tried before — bonus points for doing dishes together.
  • If you both work remotely, have a quiet “working date” in your living room and coordinate your break times for some literal or metaphorical tea.
  • Plan a two-part cleaning swap. For example, they come to help you wash your windows one week, and you go to their house to help organize their pantry the next week.
  • If there’s a holiday coming up, invite them over to make cards or wrap gifts with you.
  • Work in the garden together or lay outside and read.
  • Plan a free at-home spa day with a DIY facial steam and a YouTube yoga session.
  • Make a few freezer meals together to prepare for any upcoming busy seasons.
  • Clean out your closet — a friend can offer fresh perspectives on outfit combinations you wouldn’t have considered and help you decide what to say goodbye to.
  • Have a “mending party” together and prolong the life of your clothes.
  • Host a silly simple themed dinner that will cost next to nothing. (Our last one was quite literally just “potato.” Everyone brought a different potato dish to our house and presented it before we ate, no fancy decor, just a chance for people to get creative and laugh about something as simple as the versatility of a root vegetable.)

Here are some ideas that weave into the fabric of daily life (and get you out of the house!):

  • Go on a hike or walk a local trail.
  • Volunteer together for a local cause you both care about.
  • Go grocery shopping for one or both of you.
  • Take your dog(s) to the dog park together.
  • Ask them to join in your errands and chat as you head to the dry cleaner, bank, etc.
  • Sign up for a 5k together (or create your own!).

Will I continue to go out on the town with friends? Absolutely. Even couples who spend every day living together benefit tremendously from treating themselves to a special date night. I’m just not relying on that as the foundational or primary activity for my friendships. The more I trust my friends with access to my real life, the more they trust me with theirs, and that is more satisfying than any fancy dinner out.

]]>
For my entire career, I’ve been building brands behind the scenes for female founders who were just a few paces ahead of me. Seeing their growth up close felt like a direct mirror for my own potential. They gave me that expansive feeling. If she can do it, so can I.

I’m a brand marketer who works at the intersection of storytelling, marketing, community-building, and helping founders find their voice. I’ve always been able to see other people’s magic — and translate it into a message, an offering, a brand that resonates with and finds the people who need to hear it.

“When would I have the courage to put myself out there, and share my own talents, ideas, and creativity with the world?”

But after a decade of telling other people’s stories — and watching their success expand because of it — I started to have this nagging feeling. If I can do this for others, why am I not doing it for myself? When would I have the courage to put myself out there and share my own talents, ideas, and creativity with the world?

Around my 30th birthday, these questions stopped being theoretical. I was frustrated and shrinking into the background of operations — telling myself that if I could just figure out what I wanted to build, say, or share, then I’d finally start. Once I knew what it was, putting myself out there would feel obvious. But the truth was: Waiting for clarity had become another way of hiding.

You might be familiar with the concept of a “Saturn return.” It’s that period of time in your late twenties when the universe taps you on the shoulder and says, gently but firmly: It’s time to stop living on potential and start taking responsibility for the life you actually want. Whether or not you believe in astrology, this maturation point between 28–31 usually illuminates everything you’ve been avoiding, and asks you to let go of any conditioning that’s not serving the authentic expression of your gifts… and this happens again between 57–60, when life asks you to evaluate if you’re happy with how things are unfolding mid-life.

In the throes of my questioning, I connected with a new friend. She was at a crossroads in her career — burned out on agency life and craving more freedom. Because I’d taken an alternative path as a career freelancer, my advice came from the very real way I’d navigated my own work: Helping her see her value as a creative, understand her marketable skills, and identify brands she could offer them to directly so she could make more money on her own terms.

I didn’t see this advice as anything special. I was just helping a friend by sharing a perspective that felt second nature to me. But when she implemented what I suggested — and saw immediate, tangible success — she reflected it back to me clearly: You have to teach other people how to do this.

“I was ready to put my energy somewhere — to finally build something of my own — so I followed the ping and started down the path.”

At first, I thought it was a boring idea. Teach people how to freelance? I was looking for something more exciting. But I was ready to put my energy somewhere — to finally build something of my own — so I followed the ping and started down the path of creating an e-course.

Excited by the process, I wrote lessons, recorded audio content, designed my brand, and came up with fun marketing ideas. I poured myself into the project for the next eight months, and just when I thought I was nearly ready to launch, it hit me. Now I needed to put myself out there if I really wanted to build this brand… and that felt really, really scary.

I stumbled across a video by an inspiring woman building a business around upskilling the corporate workforce. She shared her journey from zero to thousands of followers after committing to a daily value-forward social media experiment. I related to her background and was motivated by her story, but I remember lying in bed thinking, I would sooner die than put videos of myself on the internet.

And it wasn’t because I wasn’t outgoing or confident. It was because I was afraid of what other people would think of me.

Some of the worries and doubts that tried to hold me back included:

  • What if I’m cringey or seem like a try-hard?
  • What if nobody cares or engages at all?
  • What if I’m not actually good at this?
  • What if I run out of things to say?
  • What if I can’t follow through and fail in front of everyone?
  • What if I just don’t want people thinking about me at all?

But underneath all of those fears was a bigger, heavier question: What if I stayed silent and never shared at all? What would it cost me to keep my work — and myself — hidden?

And what might be possible if I were brave enough to try?

If any of this feels familiar, you’re not alone. Whether you’re an artist, writer, entrepreneur, leader, coach, professional — or simply someone with lived experience and ideas you want to share — the fear of being seen shows up for all of us. Especially when the work is personal. Especially when it matters.

Pushing through that fear isn’t just about confidence or self-expression. It’s about honoring what’s inside you. It’s about allowing your work to find the people it’s meant to serve. And it’s about opening yourself up to new opportunities, meaningful connections, and conversations that can only happen when you let yourself be visible.

“It’s about honoring what’s inside you. It’s about allowing your work to find the people it’s meant to serve.”

Since that moment of panic lying in bed, I’ve done the thing anyway. I launched. Over the last 12 months, I’ve shared hundreds of videos across social platforms, stayed consistent with my Substack, and started mentoring other founders, creatives, and leaders on how to put themselves out there in a way that actually feels aligned.

Being brave enough to share has led to clients, speaking engagements, brand partnerships, features, sales, new friends, and community. Best of all, I feel proud when I look at my growing body of work and know it’s offering real value to people.

So if you’re ready to step into the light and start sharing, here are the lessons that helped me.

Sharing your work is not showing off — it’s creating visibility

Sharing your work isn’t about showing off — or even about followers. It’s about creating visibility for yourself so you’re top of mind when opportunities arise, or when people need the services, skills, and perspective you can offer.

For a long time, I thought creating content and being visible meant making myself the center of attention. I even judged myself for wanting that. I’ve spoken to so many people who avoid sharing altogether because they don’t want to be self-aggrandizing, egotistical, or show-offy.

What I’ve learned is that visibility isn’t about drawing attention to yourself. It’s about letting your work circulate without trying to control how it’s received. Visibility isn’t vanity. It’s distribution.

“Visibility isn’t vanity. It’s distribution.”

You also get to control the tone of your output. If you’re not a show-offy person, you don’t suddenly become one by sharing your work. You can show up quietly, generously, and with the simple intention of letting the right people find what you’ve made.

When you share what you do, you’re not imposing — you’re offering

Here’s the simple part we often forget: If you don’t tell people what you’re doing, you can’t expect them to know. I had a friend who finally shared her freelance writing services and Substack on LinkedIn to her professional network after years of resistance — and in 24 hours, she got 2 new inbound clients and 75 subscribers… it could be that easy.

“If you don’t tell people what you’re doing, you can’t expect them to know.”

So many people have talents, services, creative projects, or businesses they hope will lead to clients, sales, or opportunities — but they haven’t even told their immediate circle what they’re working on. Meanwhile, people are looking for resources all the time. They’re trying to solve problems. They’re asking for recommendations.

When you share what you do, you’re not imposing — you’re offering. You’re giving people a chance to remember you when the moment is right. That’s not self-promotion. It’s a service. And when done thoughtfully, it’s a win-win.

You don’t have to have it all figured out — clarity unfolds over time

When you’re starting off, begin with a few simple intentions: share your work, provide value to others, and stay consistent — even if consistency, for now, means once a month.

As you put things out into the world, you’ll start to receive feedback on what you create – through messages, comments, and conversations. Pay more attention to the qualitative signals than the vanity metrics.

“When you let yourself start before you feel ready, your work begins to take shape in conversation with the world instead of in isolation.”

Try not to judge your work or over-strategize too early. Give yourself at least ten pieces (posts, articles, videos) before deciding what’s working. You’re still getting your bearings — learning what feels good to create, noticing who’s on the other side, and understanding what you want to build by paying attention to what energizes you.

When you let yourself start before you feel ready, your work begins to take shape in conversation with the world instead of in isolation.

What I’ve learned is that clarity is a byproduct of movement, not a requirement for it. I didn’t find my voice by thinking harder in private. I found it by showing up, sharing what felt true that day, and noticing what resonated.

You don’t have to pretend to be an expert; share from your experience

We don’t need more people pretending to have it all figured out. We need more people willing to be honest, relatable, and open enough to let others walk alongside them.

“We need more people willing to be honest, relatable, and open enough to let others walk alongside them.”

What’s often more compelling than the final result is the journey itself – the micro-moments that shape you along the way. The mistakes you’ve made. The challenges you learned from. The times you took the long, circuitous route. The moments when things unexpectedly worked out, or when you met someone who shifted the trajectory of your life.

Instead of trying to polish everything into “content,” start sharing what’s already present for you:

  • What have you been thinking about lately?
  • How did you make whatever you’re sharing?
  • What are you learning in real time?
  • What’s something you wish you knew before that now feels like a no-brainer?
  • How do you feel about sharing your work?
  • Who do you hope it reaches?

Sharing what’s alive in you today is where authenticity and connection stem from. You don’t need to position yourself as an expert. Being just 10% ahead of someone is 100% valuable to them.

It’s all material for your growth

Whatever feelings arise for you around this process — note them. They are not trying to stop you from moving forward… they are just ready to be felt so that you can move to your next level.

Whether it’s imposter syndrome, self-doubt, shame, embarrassment, self-judgment… see them for what they are: opportunities to release something that’s been holding you back, instead of roadblocks to what you want.

“Someone out there is looking for exactly what you have to offer. “

You don’t have to become an influencer, over-expose yourself, or suddenly feel completely fearless. The only goal is to take one step at a time — to share what’s already inside you and trust that the path will reveal itself as you keep moving.

Start where you are, and let yourself be seen a little more than yesterday. Someone out there is looking for exactly what you have to offer.

So if there’s something you’ve been wanting to say or share, consider this your permission slip. I’ll be cheering you on.

The post The 10 Best Nontoxic And Organic Pillows (2026 Review) appeared first on The Good Trade.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

I’ve reviewed dozens of organic pillows of various materials, sizes, shapes, and firmness over the years. These are ten standout options that are comfortable, durable, and safe to sleep on for any budget.

Our secret to getting deep sleep? Organic pillows with customized support. 😴

The pillows below are crafted from nontoxic materials and are adjustable for back, stomach, and side sleepers. No more pancake pillows or folding pillows in half! Quality pillows will last you longer, too — our team has owned some of the ones featured here for more than a year now, and they still are as good as new! This is because of the fibers’ superior quality and craftsmanship (many can be washed as well to keep them fresh). Don’t let the price tags scare you; we promise a nontoxic pillow is not only good for your health and sleep, but it’s a worthwhile investment.

Why consider nontoxic or organic pillows?

Unlike your traditional box store pillow, organic pillows are crafted from nontoxic materials, like pesticide-free cotton or chemical-free natural latex, so you’ll never have to worry about your health (or the health of the planet) while sleeping. Likewise, pillows made from high-quality materials are often more supportive, as they are crafted for specific sleepers and offer different fill options so you can customize your firmness. Studies show that having optimal support (and temperature, for that matter) is crucial to quality sleep and overall health.

How to choose the best pillow for your sleep style:

Choosing a nontoxic pillow doesn’t have to feel complicated! It really comes down to how you sleep and what feels good to your body. Start by thinking about your main sleep position: Side sleepers usually need a firmer, higher pillow to keep the neck aligned, back sleepers do best with medium support that cradles the natural curve of the neck, and stomach sleepers are often most comfortable with something soft and low-profile to minimize strain.

From there, look for clean, natural materials like organic latex, cotton, wool, or kapok, which offer great support without the chemical off-gassing found in many synthetic foams. Certifications like GOTS, GOLS, OEKO-TEX, or GREENGUARD Gold can give you peace of mind that your pillow is truly free from harmful chemicals. Bonus points if it’s breathable, adjustable, and has a washable cover to keep things fresh. When your pillow matches both your sleep style and your values, better rest tends to follow.

Our methodology & criteria:

I personally slept on each of the following pillows for multiple nights. I’ve provided notes on how restful my sleep was, along with thoughts on the material and overall comfort. We’ve also considered the materials used, how the pillow will hold up over time, and the social good each brand provides. Our top picks are based on the below criteria, and we’ll continue to update this piece with emerging favorites.

  • ORGANIC | Each of these brands uses non-toxic, organic materials with no off-gassing. None contain harsh flame retardants, and all are free from toxic chemicals. We also look for brands that are committed to not using PFAS in any of their production.
  • COMFORT | Comfort is key — we have tried each of these pillows (and oh so many more!) ourselves, spent hours reading online reviews, and, of course, we review all the comments and emails from our readers. The brands on this list are here because they are organic, and we love sleeping on them. Our favorites include a variety of sizes and plushness for the stomach sleeper, avid napper, and everyone in between!
  • PRICE | Each of the brands we’ve included offers a fair value for the cost of the pillow. We considered durability, longevity, and ease of cleaning.
  • SOCIAL GOOD | The brands below have a variety of social-good and environmental initiatives, and we love supporting them.

And while you’re giving your bedroom an eco-friendly boost, check out our guides to affordable organic mattresses, organic mattress toppers, organic mattress protectors, and organic bedding.

Our Editor’s Review | I tried the organic pillow in King-size and found it to be the perfect plushness for my preference (not too hard, not too soft). It was also one of the cooler pillow options on our list, thanks to the organic wool. The cover is soft and cozy, and I love that it matches the organic cotton on our Birch mattress. Twinning!

3. Boll & Branch

American made
Cruelty free
Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified

Best For | Hypoallergenic pillow
Organic Materials | Organic cotton
Firmness Available | Choice of soft, medium, or firm support

Like all Boll & Branch bedding and bath goods, the brand’s pillow collection is ethically and sustainably made under fair trade conditions. The luxury down alternative pillow is OEKO-TEX Certified, replacing feathers and other animal by-products by using allergy-friendly PrimaLoft fibers and 100 percent organic cotton covers.

Our Editor’s Review | I tried the down alternative pillow insert in medium density and found it to be incredibly soft and luxurious. That said, I recommend ordering the firm density if you’re looking for any type of support as this pillow is very soft. I also suggest adding the pillow protector to your order for easy laundering since this one doesn’t come with a removable cover.

4. Naturepedic

Do you toss and turn while you sleep? Do you struggle to find the right position? Naturepedic’s organic adjustable pillow may be just what you need. This pillow also has adjustable latex fill, so you can easily adjust how firm it is. (It can get messy! So be cautious when you unzip it for the first time.)

Our Editor’s Review | What I loved most about Naturepedic’s pillow is the luxurious washable cover with one quilted side and the other side a cool and soft organic cotton. And the brand’s ethics are as versatile as the pillow itself: Organic materials, MADE SAFE certification, US ethical production, and support for 1% for the Planet. All in all, this was one of our favorite pillows on the list for the price point.

5. Coyuchi

1% for the planet
Eco friendly packaging
Gives back
Natural materials
Woman owned

Best For | Pillow for side sleepers
Organic Materials | GOLS Certified organic Dunlop latex, GOTS Certified organic cotton
Firmness Available | Medium-firm support

Coyuchi’s Molded Organic Latex Pillow, one of many Coyuchi offers, uses GOLS Certified organic Dunlop latex for a fresh night’s sleep. Best for back and side sleepers, this material is breathable, resistant to mold and mildew, and biodegradable. This is also one of the only pillows on the list to come without any plastic packaging (yay!). Instead, it arrived in a canvas bag, perfect for storage and protection when we’re not using it.

Our Editor’s Review | I wasn’t initially sure how I would sleep on this one with its unconventional shape — the side with the large hole is the bottom of the pillow and the two smaller holes are for your ears (perfect for that cartilage piercing or to reduce sleepy wrinkles!). All of the smaller holes help with airflow throughout the night. Here’s a video for visual reference. My verdict? While it can take a few nights to mold to your body (give it time!), this pillow is an excellent option if you’re a back sleeper or looking for additional neck support throughout the night.

6. Nest Bedding

Family owned
Natural materials
Vegan
Warranty offered

Best For | Adjustable support pillow
Organic Materials | Non-Toxic CertiPUR-US® Certified Virgin Foam and breathable cotton
Firmness Available | Adjustable fill for soft, medium, or firm support

Struggling to break up with your memory foam pillow but searching for a more sustainable option? Nest Bedding has you covered. With more than 20k reviews, the Easy Breather Pillow is the brand’s most popular pillow and has adjustable, nontoxic and virgin foam fill (custom support and better sleep for the win). The Easy Breather even comes with a complimentary fill bag to store what you don’t use. And thanks to its unique design, this one has that cool “other side of the pillow” feel. The cooling fabric disperses heat and wicks away excess moisture.

Our Editor’s Review | I tried the down alternative pillow and I was a bit hesitant when I first opened the box. For starters, the brand notes no to low scent from the fill, but I noticed an immediate fish-like smell. Not a deal breaker, but it’s something to keep in mind. As I’m generally someone who needs a lot of extra support from her pillow, this one seemed like it would be a bit too pancake-y for me. After a few hours though, the pillow fluffed right up and I was pleasantly surprised by the provided comfort. I’d likely still opt for something a bit firmer, but this is a great option if you’re looking to replace your memory foam and prefer a soft pillow!

7. Saatva

Natural materials
Warranty offered

Best For | Luxury hotel-style pillow
Organic Materials | Organic cotton and American Talalay latex
Firmness Available | Medium-Plush Support

Discounts Available | Now when you purchase a mattress at Saatva, you’ll save $300 at checkout (when your purchase is over $1,000)

Saatva wins for the most luxurious pillow on the list. And if you suffer from spine or neck pain, a few nights on this pillow may be a game-changer. It’s made in the USA with a dreamy combo of organic cotton and naturally breathable latex, and is basically a five-star hotel for your head. It’s cool, cushy, and crafted with clean materials—so you can sleep easy in every sense.

Our Editor’s Review | I tried the Queen size, which comes with two (yes two!) removable covers and an inner pillow. It’s soft yet supportive, and the brand isn’t bluffing when it says “hotel-quality comfort”. Talk about a good night’s sleep. As for materials, the organic and eco-friendly pillow is crafted with 100 percent organic cotton and 100 percent sustainable American Talalay latex. And if you learn it’s not for you, you can leverage Saatva’s 45-day return policy.

8. Sol Organics

BIPOC Owned
Fair trade
Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Small business
Vegan

Best For | Pillow for stomach sleepers
Organic Materials | GOTS Certified cotton and natural fibers
Firmness Available | Choice of soft, medium, or firm support

Proudly based out of Canada, Sol Organics wants to make ethical luxury accessible. The brand uses responsibly grown and harvested white down with 100 percent GOTS Certified cotton down proof to create a hypoallergenic filling that is both light and breathable.

Our Editor’s Review | My Sol Organics pillow arrived in a plastic carry bag, which I appreciated for the added protection (but of course would have preferred no plastic). I ordered the firm for side sleepers and found it to be a bit too soft for my preference — though it has a nice plushness. I recommend this option for stomach sleepers or if you are seeking a pillow you can really sink into.

9. Earthfoam

American made
Budget friendly
Fair trade
Family owned
GOTS certified
Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Recycled materials
Warranty offered

Best For | Pressure-relieving pillow
Organic Materials | Natural foam rubber and two outer layers of soft organic cotton
Firmness Available | Squishy with firm head support

For a budget-friendly pillow that doesn’t compromise on comfort or design, we look no further than Earthfoam’s squishy cloud-like pillow. It’s a dream for those of us who need extra head support — no more folding floppy pillows in half! — and we love that the brand boasts several internationally recognized certifications for fair trade, organic, safety, and emissions standards.

Our Editor’s Review | I put this pillow to the test for a few night’s of sleep and let me tell you: The squishy factor does not disappoint! As someone who is notorious for stacking pillows upon pillows for extra support, Earthfoam’s natural foam core was all that I needed for a peaceful night of rest. Let’s just say, this one may keep me from making frequent trips to the chiropractor.

10. NaturalMat

Eco friendly packaging
Handcrafted
Made in the UK
Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Recycled materials
Small business

Best For | Organic wool pillow
Organic Materials | Organic wool and cotton
Firmness Available | Firm Support

UK-based NaturalMat offers home and nursery goods, including a range of pillows, all made by hand in Devon using wool from local organic farms. Its organic wool pillow is perfect for those who like firmer feels while enjoying a safe, chemical-free night’s sleep.

Our Editor’s Review | NaturalMat also ships to the USA via the brand’s US site, so I was excited to try the Organic Wool Pillow (twin), which is equivalent in size to the standard wool pillow on the UK site. It arrived in paper packaging (protected by plastic) and came with a canvas bag for additional storage and protection. This pillow is firm, and temperature-regulating. We loved our night’s sleep with it.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

We’ve researched and tested dozens of sustainable couches over the years — these are our top picks for green velvet sofas and couches that are durable and nontoxic from thoughtful brands.

Anyone else feeling ready to leave the gray days of interior decorating behind? Want to make a bold move that speaks to how you’re both grounded and ready to live fearless and free? Bring on the green velvet sofa. 💚

Green is the new gray, a go-to for anchor pieces that can range from a cozy neutral to a jewel-toned showstopper. It’s minimalist, it’s maximalist, and the trend has been growing since celebrities (hey J.Lo and Emily Ratajkowski!) started posting selfies lounging against the luscious, light-catching glow of their green velvet couches.

Go moss green for a low-key relaxed vibe, bold with a lime green à la the Memphis Group, or choose a refined pear for a glamorous summer-in-the-Hamptons look. Here’s a quick tip on styling: Green is a versatile color best off-set with other neutrals like black, white, cream, gray-blue, and anything in the copper-colored family. Since oxidized copper goes green over time, the two make a great pair. Honestly, pair it with whatever the heck you want and it will play — it’s nice like that.

Why consider sustainable velvet for your couch?

When it comes to buttery velvet, there is just one downside: It turns out that many velvet production practices are harmful for the environment. Velvet can be woven from any type of yarn (silk, cotton, wool) but to cut costs, is most often woven from synthetic fibers like polyester or nylon. These plastic-based materials never biodegrade. And because velvet requires multiple production steps (read: Resource-sucking), it uses more yarn than most other fabrics and is often treated with stain repellant — meaning the output can be well…less than green. To combat this, a better sustainable option is opting for velvet couches that are made with recycled materials and carry trusted certifications to ensure they’re free from toxic chemicals like PFAS and flame retardants.

What are the relevant certifications?

For a velvet sofa that’s actually as good for your home as it is for the planet, certifications are your best shortcut. Labels like GREENGUARD Gold mean the couch gives off fewer harmful fumes like VOCs, helping keep your indoor air cleaner. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is also a big one for velvet — it tells you the fabric is free from harmful chemicals and safe for direct skin contact. If the couch frame is made with FSC-certified wood, that’s even better, as you’ll know it came from responsibly managed forests. And for those plush cushions, CertiPUR-US ensures the foam is made without toxic flame retardants or heavy metals. Together, these certifications take the guesswork out of sustainability, letting you relax on a sofa that’s as thoughtful as it is beautiful.

So if you love the green velvet sofa but you also love our green earth, we’re here to help!

Our criteria:

Our editors have personally tested and researched dozens of sustainable furniture brands, and vetted thousands of customer reviews, to select our top picks for green velvet sofas and couches. We’ve chosen brands that are sustainable, ethical, built to last, and above all make beautiful green velvet couches that we love to lounge on.

  • NONTOXIC/ORGANIC | We’ve chosen brands that use bio-based yarns like 100% organic cotton, bamboo, lyocell, or linen as well as thoughtfully sourced and treated metals and wood. We’ve noted the corresponding certifications so you can be sure you’re getting the best of the best.
  • ETHICS | The brands on this list use responsible labor and production practices, and many have thoughtful give back programs as well.
  • DURABLE | Sustainable commitments mean higher quality products that will last you a long time, if not a lifetime. These couches have proven to hold up against daily wear and tear.

The post 10 Anti-Racism Educators To Follow And Support (2026) appeared first on The Good Trade.

]]>
What is anti-racism in 2026? For me, surprisingly, it’s about hope.

I remember the desperate fervor that filled me and many others in 2020 after the murder of George Floyd and during the height of the Black Lives Matter movement. It was a familiar anguish — a grief I felt and still feel for people I will never meet, like Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Breonna Taylor, and so many others whose names I will never know. But it was an unfamiliar hope that change was not just possible, but inevitable.

“Now, I feel a shift. And it’s the shift I hope turns the key to real change.”

Somehow, I still feel it now. Not despite the past year of dinner conversations turning to words like “fascism” and “polycrisis,” but because of those conversations. I remember that old advice to never talk about politics at the dinner table. Or when even the term “anti-racism” felt too complex to broach in casual conversation. Now, I feel a shift. And it’s the shift I hope turns the key to real change.

Holding onto hope, however, is a practice. One that cannot be sustained alone. Hope is a community practice, and, now more than ever, it’s being sustained by communities online.

While real-life activism matters — from protests to engaging with local mutual aid networks — in our digital age, speaking truth to power often happens online and on social media. From bearing witness to the experiences of marginalized communities to educating ourselves and others, I find our access to information inspiring. However, as information floods our feeds, curating our sources is more important than ever.

“As information floods our feeds, curating our sources is more important than ever.”

What should we look for in the anti-racist educators we trust? My general rule is to trust research-based, credential-backed sources over sensationalist hot takes. By contextualizing our current moment in history, theory, and politics, these educators are also more hopeful. They know the power that collective action has had in the past. And they can help us hold the current moment to sustain our hope for the future.

Below are some of the most inspiring creators that I follow, and I hope you will too.

Summary: Hiya Kids Daily Hydration is a kid-friendly electrolyte drink mix designed to support hydration, digestion, and overall wellbeing without added sugar or artificial ingredients. Formulated with balanced electrolytes, real fruit powders, and prebiotic fiber, it’s tailored to children’s needs during active play, hot days, illness, or everyday hydration. In practice, it proved both enjoyable for kids and reassuring for a parent seeking clean, minimal, science-backed nourishment.

What I love:

  • Clean, thoughtfully formulated with no added sugar, artificial dyes, or unnecessary fillers, and third-party tested for safety
  • Kid-approved taste from real fruit powders, making water more appealing without sugary juices or sports drinks
  • Includes electrolytes plus prebiotic fiber and bonus nutrients to support hydration, gut health, immunity, and stable energy

Things to keep in mind:

  • Powder requires extra stirring or a frother to fully dissolve
  • May feel unnecessary for kids who already hydrate well with plain water
  • As a supplement, it’s an added cost compared to water or homemade hydration options

I watch from the kitchen window as my two children ride their scooters in the cul-de-sac with the other neighborhood kids. He’s two, she’s four, and they have respective blue and pink scooters that light up when they get going fast enough. The dads chat with each other close by, spaced far enough apart to serve as a barrier between the kids and the open world beyond our street.

So much of parenthood centers around keeping our little ones regulated, which is why if you ask me for parenting advice, I won’t have much to say other than this: When in doubt, go outside, keep them nourished, and sneak in as many snuggles as possible. These practices are tried and true in our day-to-day lives and, in my experience, the fastest way to better sleep, generally cheerful moods, and happy, growing kids.

“My north stars are prioritizing protein when possible, encouraging hydration, and incorporating fiber when we can.”

As for nourishment, my north stars are prioritizing protein when possible, encouraging hydration, and incorporating fiber when we can (this is the hardest one for us!). All of this keeps their blood sugar levels stable and their digestion moving, leading to brains and bodies that are active and properly processing the world around them.

As a mother, my mind is constantly scanning my surroundings for the best, most efficient ways to keep us all well and thriving, and I approach any tools that can support us in this way with cautious optimism. I lean more minimal when it comes to supplements, but I’d heard about Hiya’s good reputation and was intrigued when I read about their formulation that includes balanced minerals and prebiotic fiber.

About Hiya

Hiya is a kids’ supplement brand founded in 2019 by two dads, Darren Litt and Adam Gillman, who were frustrated by the lack of healthy options for children’s vitamins after seeing popular gummy supplements that were high in sugar and artificial additives. They wanted a cleaner, science-backed alternative they could confidently give their own kids, so they teamed up with pediatricians and nutritionists to formulate products with essential nutrients and no added sugar or unnecessary fillers.

“Their products use carefully selected, transparent ingredients, avoid artificial dyes and sugars, and are made in cGMP-compliant facilities.”

From the start, Hiya has emphasized high safety and ingredient standards. Their products use carefully selected, transparent ingredients, avoid artificial dyes and sugars, and are made in cGMP-compliant facilities.

Every batch of Hiya’s supplements is third-party tested for contaminants such as heavy metals and microbes — one of the first things I personally look for in a supplement — and most of their products have been independently validated for purity and earned independent certifications like the Clean Label Project, including the hydration support.

Do kids really need a hydration supplement?

As a mother trying to strike the ever-elusive balance between doing all I can for my children and keeping overwhelm at bay, my first question regarding supplemental hydration was this: Do kids really need a hydration supplement? And if so, can’t they just have some of mine?

“Do kids really need a hydration supplement? And if so, can’t they just have some of mine?”

Here is what I learned: Hydration support is most important during active play or sports, hot days, and whenever kids are likely to sweat or need additional hydration, like when they’re traveling or under the weather. Furthermore, because children’s electrolyte needs and palates differ from adults’, this kid-targeted blend helps maintain fluid balance without excess sodium or added sugars, making it suitable for everyday use, school days, and on-the-go hydration.

Hiya Kids Daily Hydration is a gentle, kid-friendly electrolyte drink mix designed to make water more appealing while supporting healthy hydration throughout the day. Unlike traditional sugary sports drinks, it’s formulated with real fruit powders — including strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, cherry, orange, and lemon — that give a naturally fruity taste without artificial dyes or sweeteners. These fruit powders come from concentrated real fruits, providing flavor and a small amount of vitamin C while keeping the ingredient list clean and recognizable.

“It’s formulated with real fruit powders — including strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, cherry, orange, and lemon — that give a naturally fruity taste without artificial dyes or sweeteners.”

The formula balances key electrolytes like potassium, sodium, and magnesium with Himalayan pink salt and coconut water to help replenish minerals kids lose through play, illness, sports, or warm weather activity. My favorite thing about Hiya’s hydration for kids is that it also includes prebiotic fiber from artichoke inulin to support gut health, digestion, immunity, and stabilize blood sugar levels, and bonus nutrients like vitamin C, calcium, and iron.

Unboxing and first sips

As any parent knows, a small task can seemingly take ages, which can be a drag if you’re trying to get somewhere in a hurry. But this can also be a gift if you’d like to turn a simple task into an activity! That’s exactly what we did with our Hiya bundles.

Each kit comes with its own package of stickers to personalize their containers, so of course, we got to work right away. Afterward, my daughter enjoyed pouring the powder into their containers, and my son enjoyed licking the remnants off the countertop.

Unprompted, my daughter said, “Tasty! Thank you, mama,” when she had her first sips. I mean, that’s about as good as it gets as far as kid reviews go! I tried it too, and honestly, I am happy to polish off the rest of theirs when they inevitably get distracted and run off to play. It reminds me of strawberry lemonade, and I plan to serve it to them over ice and with a crazy straw on hot summer days later in the year.

“Unprompted, my daughter said, ‘Tasty! Thank you, mama,’ when she had her first sips. I mean, that’s about as good as it gets as far as kid reviews go!”

I’ll note that the powder takes quite a bit of stirring to dissolve, and I recommend using a frother for more seamless mixing. Nevertheless, if you don’t have a frother, putting it in their water bottle at the beginning of the day, giving it a few good shakes, and leaving it to finish dissolving on the countertop ahead of school drop-off works well, too.

The powder takes quite a bit of stirring to dissolve, and I recommend using a frother for more seamless mixing.

My favorite thing about Hiya’s hydration for kids is not only is it a fun treat I can give to my kids that serves as a highlight in their day, but it’s also a steady reinforcement to their immune, nervous system, and gut health. Happy juice for them, sigh of relief for me.

Final thoughts

I recommend Hiya’s hydration support as a helpful tool in any parent’s arsenal that can support kids’ hydration, digestion, and overall wellbeing. It’s also a fantastic alternative if you have a chronic juice drinker and would like to transition them to something with less sugar and more health benefits.

When you receive your bundle in the mail, be sure to clear the hour ahead — mix some potions, craft with stickers, and make some memories together! Such things are the most nourishing parts of their childhood, after all.

Don’t forget to cheers for healthy hydration!

Our team has tested and researched dozens of strollers for our babies — these are our top selections for safety, non-toxic materials, and design across a range of price points.

You know what baby gear isn’t really optional? A stroller. For most parents, it’s part of daily survival. It’s how we get out of the house when we’re exhausted, how we squeeze in fresh air when the days feel long, and how we manage errands, walks, travel, and life with a baby (or toddler) in tow. Our strollers get folded and unfolded, lifted in and out of the trunk with one hand, and pushed over cracked sidewalks while we’re juggling coffee, snacks, and everything else we bring “just in case.”

Because of all that, a stroller has to work — and work well. It needs to be lightweight but sturdy, easy to maneuver, ergonomic for tired bodies, and comfortable enough that our baby actually wants to sit (and hopefully nap) in it. When we finally make it outside for a walk, we want it to feel calming and enjoyable, not like another thing to wrestle with.

And once those basics are covered, many of us start thinking about something else: what our baby is actually sitting in. Stroller seats and straps are in constant contact with their skin (and mouth, iykyk), and not all fabrics are created equal. Some are treated with flame retardants, PFAS (often called “forever chemicals”), and other synthetic finishes we’d rather keep out of our children’s everyday environment. That’s usually when the search begins for a stroller that functions beautifully and is made from safer materials.

The good news? Parents don’t have to choose between performance and peace of mind — not anymore. More brands are finally listening and designing strollers that are lightweight, thoughtfully engineered, and made with non-toxic fabrics that support babies’ comfort and our sanity. The strollers below are raising the bar, and as very tired parents, we’re genuinely grateful for it.

What stroller materials are safest for everyday use?

If you’re trying to limit unnecessary chemical exposure (without sacrificing comfort or practicality), here are some fabrics and certifications that are worth paying attention to:

GREENGUARD GOLD certified fabrics
Products with this certification are tested for low chemical emissions, especially volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can off-gas into the air and contribute to indoor air pollution. GREENGUARD Gold is a more stringent standard designed for sensitive groups, such as children. This means certified products tend to release fewer chemicals into the air than uncertified ones, which can be beneficial for items your baby uses frequently.

Organic cotton
Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, and because it’s a natural fiber, it doesn’t typically require chemical finishes. That makes it a good choice for breathability and comfort, especially next to baby’s skin. Many stroller brands that prioritize safer materials use cotton certified organic or GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard).

Wool or wool-blend fabrics
Wool has natural temperature-regulating properties and is inherently more flame-resistant than many synthetic fibers, allowing some manufacturers to avoid adding chemical flame retardants to meet safety standards. That said, true wool-blend strollers are less common than polyester, and you’ll want to check whether manufacturers treat wool in other ways.

Responsibly made recycled fabrics
Many strollers use polyester or nylon — because these materials are durable and easy to clean — but you can find versions made from recycled PET or other recycled inputs. These don’t automatically guarantee “non-toxic,” but some brands are certified (e.g., OEKO-TEX or GREENGUARD) or make explicit claims to be free of PFAS and flame retardants to minimize harmful chemical treatments.

A few nuances worth noting:

  • “Non-toxic” doesn’t have a single legal definition for strollers — no stroller can realistically be 100% free of all synthetics and chemicals, and there’s no mandatory safety test for fabrics the way there is for car seats or cribs.
  • Certifications like GREENGUARD Gold focus on emissions, not every possible harmful ingredient — so they’re one sound signal, but not a guarantee of zero exposure.
  • Labels such as OEKO-TEX or GOTS can also be strong indicators of low chemical residue levels, especially for fabrics that come into contact with skin.

Our criteria:

There’s no shortage of stroller options, from long-standing baby brands to newer, sustainability-focused companies. To help simplify the decision, we’ve curated this list using the criteria below and regularly update it as better materials and innovations emerge.

  • NONTOXIC MATERIALS | We prioritize strollers made without harmful chemicals like flame retardants, PFAS, BPA, and phthalates. Many of our picks feature GREENGUARD GOLD certified fabrics, organic textiles, or naturally resilient materials like wool.
  • DESIGN, SAFETY & FUNCTIONALITY | Every stroller we recommend meets essential safety standards while offering thoughtful, practical design — from ergonomic seating to sturdy construction that lasts through multiple stages (and siblings).
  • SUSTAINABILITY & VALUE | Our selections span a range of price points, but each one delivers strong value through durability, responsible sourcing, and safer materials. Investing in a well-made, non-toxic stroller isn’t just a purchase — it’s a long-term investment in your family’s health and a more sustainable future.

Looking for more nontoxic baby gear? Check out our guide to nontoxic carseats and our Nuna stroller review.

1. Nuna

GOTS certified
Greenguard certified
Natural materials
Third party tested
Warranty offered

Best For | Everyday strollers, travel systems, and parents who want premium design with safer materials
Nontoxic Materials | GREENGUARD Gold certified fabrics; select models feature Merino wool + TENCEL™ lyocell inserts
Features We Love | Lightweight designs, UPF 50+ canopies, single-hand fold, smooth suspension, near-flat recline options, generous storage baskets, 360 swivel wheels
Prices Starting At | $425+

Nuna is a go-to brand for parents seeking a high-quality, non-toxic stroller built for daily use. It’s the brand our editors love and trust most (read our Nuna review here) because the carseats and strollers are thoughtfully designed for real life — they are easy to fold, smooth to push, and comfortable for even the most wiggly baby. The SWIV, for example, has a lightweight carbon fiber-reinforced aluminum frame, one-touch braking for safety, and a button-activated 360° rotation on all 4 wheels, enabling side-to-side motion and instant pivot navigation. Fancy, no!?

Many Nuna strollers are GREENGUARD Gold Certified, meaning they meet strict standards for low chemical emissions. This matters for strollers, where babies are in close contact with the seat fabric and canopy. Some models, like the Nuna TRIV next, also include a removable insert made with Merino wool and TENCEL™ lyocell, which are naturally breathable and gentle on baby’s skin.

Functionally, Nuna strollers are both comfortable and convenient. The TRVL is especially popular for travel thanks to the lightweight frame and self-folding design (our editors have taken them on flights with ease), while the MIXX next works well as an everyday stroller with its smooth suspension, supportive recline, and spacious storage basket.

If you’re searching for a stroller that’s easy to use, comfortable for your baby, and made with safer materials, Nuna is a reliable, well-designed option that holds up to everyday life.

2. UPPAbaby

Greenguard certified
Natural materials
Third party tested
Warranty offered

Best For | Growing families who want a stroller system with flexible configurations (including options that support multiple kids, depending on model)
Nontoxic Materials | GREENGUARD Gold certified strollers (low chemical emissions), products meet applicable flammability standards without brominated/chlorinated chemicals like PBBs/PBDEs
Features We Love | Expandable seating (single to double), large UPF 50+ canopies, reversible seats, generous storage baskets, smooth suspension, adjustable handlebars
Prices Starting At |$250+

UPPAbaby is a brand we love and trust for baby gear that is solid, intuitive, and built to last. The strollers are designed for daily use — they are easy to steer, steady on uneven sidewalks, and spacious enough to carry everything that somehow comes along for every outing.

On the materials side, many UPPAbaby strollers are GREENGUARD Gold Certified, meeting the strict standards for low chemical emissions. The brand also states that its products meet required flammability standards without using certain brominated or chlorinated flame-retardant chemicals, which is an important consideration for fabric safety.

What really sets UPPAbaby apart, though, is the flexibility. Models like the Vista V3 are designed to adapt as your family grows, with options to move from a single stroller to configurations that accommodate multiple children (a huge sustainability win since you don’t need to get a new stroller). Reversible seats, large UPF 50+ canopies, and cushioned, adjustable seating help keep babies comfortable from newborn days through toddlerhood.

3. Bumbleride

Family owned
Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Recycled materials
Warranty offered

Best For | Active families who want an all-terrain stroller with a strong focus on safer, eco-conscious materials
Nontoxic Materials | OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 (Class I)–certified fabrics made from 100% recycled PET; free from flame retardants, PFAS, BPA, phthalates, PVC, lead, formaldehyde, and chlorine
Features | Air-filled tires, all-wheel suspension, reversible or lay-flat seating (model dependent), UPF canopy, roomy under-seat storage
Prices Starting At | ~$799+

Bumbleride is ideal for highly active parents or for those who live in rural areas. The stroller is designed for uneven sidewalks, dirt paths, and everywhere in between. The air-filled tires and full suspension make a noticeable difference on rougher terrain and deliver durability without compromising comfort.

Materials are where Bumbleride really stands apart, though. All stroller fabrics and padding are OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Class I certified, meaning they’re tested for harmful substances and considered safe for direct contact with babies. The brand also states its strollers are made without common chemical additives parents often try to avoid, including flame retardants and PFAS. Fabrics are produced from 100% recycled plastic bottles, balancing durability with a lower environmental footprint.

Moreover, these stroller seats are padded and supportive, and many models recline or lie flat for newborn use. The canopies offer ample coverage for longer outings, and the double stroller is perfect for twins or siblings.

4. Zoe

Greenguard certified
Natural materials
Third party tested
Warranty offered
Woman owned

Best For | Lightweight, travel-ready strollers that are easy to fold, expandable for growing families, and tested for everyday comfort and safety
Nontoxic Materials | GREENGUARD Gold certified stroller fabrics; free from added flame retardants; free from BPA, pesticides, PFAS, phthalates, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and formaldehyde; waterproofing via food-grade polyethylene coating
Features | Compact and lightweight fold, car seat compatibility (select models), convertible for siblings/multiples, UPF 50 fabrics, solid or all-terrain wheels (model dependent), breathable knit seats
Prices Starting At | $250+

Meet Zoe. These strollers are designed for parents who want practical, everyday performance plus peace of mind on materials. Every stroller is GREENGUARD Gold Certified, and the brand is very transparent about what it uses (and doesn’t use). The fabrics are durable and easy to clean, but they’re also naturally flame-resistant. Zoe strollers are also Baby Safety Alliance Verified, meaning they meet independent third-party safety and performance standards, as well as chemical testing.

According to the brand, these strollers are made without BPA, pesticides, PFAS, phthalates, PAH, or formaldehyde — and even the waterproofing is handled without extra chemical treatments. The lineup includes travel-friendly strollers and modular choices to grow with your family. As for features, it has all the bells and whistles, including UPF 50+ canopies, breathable seat fabrics, and thoughtfully engineered frames that balance comfort for baby with convenience for parents. Plus, the name is so cute!

5. Guava Roam

Greenguard certified
Natural materials
Small business
Warranty offered

Best For | Active parents who want one stroller that can handle daily walks and real runs
Nontoxic Materials | GREENGUARD Gold–certified fabrics; free from added flame retardants, PFAS, and PVC
Features | Remote-locking front wheel, airless all-terrain tires, independent suspension, adjustable handlebar, compact one-hand fold that stands upright, seat supports kids up to 60 lbs
Prices Starting At | $650

The Guava Roam is built like a jogging stroller but without the clunky, oversized feel that usually comes with one. We appreciate that we can use it for real runs or everyday walks and errands without feeling like we’re pushing a tank. One of the best features is the remote-locking front wheel, which lets you switch from stroll mode to run mode right from the handlebars. Add in airless tires (no flats, ever) and independent suspension, and you get a ride that’s steady and comfortable even when the terrain isn’t.

And for a jogger, it’s surprisingly compact. It folds down smaller than most and stands on its own, making it much easier to get in and out of the car. The seat reclines for on-the-go naps, supports children up to 60 pounds, and is suitable from around six months — or from birth with a car seat adapter. Material-wise, the Roam is GREENGUARD Gold Certified, while the seat fabrics and sunshade are polyester. Read our editor’s review of the Guava pack-n-play to learn more about why we love this brand so much.

Note: earlier Roam models made between 2020 and 2021 were recalled due to a brake issue. Newer models aren’t affected, but it’s worth double-checking if you’re buying secondhand.

Our editors have reviewed dozens of organic and sustainable blankets — these are our favorite wool blankets made with natural materials to keep you warm and cozy this winter.

There’s nothing cozier than cuddling up with a warm blanket in the wintertime. And whether you’re using them to stay warm at night or to snuggle up on the couch and read, wool blankets are the ultimate cold-weather staple. We’ve rounded up the best wool blankets on the market — from cashmere to merino to recycled wool — prioritizing those made with sustainable and natural materials and ethical sourcing and work environments.

Why choose a wool blanket?

Wool is a warm yet breathable material. It keeps you nice and cozy without overheating. It’s also a naturally wicking fiber, so if your household is prone to spilling, they’re less likely to stain and instead wick the liquids right off. Wool is also odor-resistant and antimicrobial, so your blankets won’t retain odor or bacteria from children or pets. Along with all of these properties, wool blankets are also very durable, so as long as you take care of them, they’ll last you a long time.

Cashmere and alpaca wool are also hypoallergenic, which makes these a great blanket option for people who are sensitive and have allergies. Wool blankets also have a wonderful natural fiber feel, ranging from slightly scratchy to ultra-soft, and you can find a blanket that feels dreamy to you.

Lastly, wool blankets are made from natural materials, making them a more sustainable option than blankets made from synthetic materials. Wool is a renewable fiber because sheep, goats, and alpacas grow new coats every season. The blankets in this list are sourced from regenerative and mindful sources that prioritize sustainability throughout the production process.

What should you look for when shopping?

The biggest thing to look for when shopping for wool blankets is certifications that ensure the blankets are made with high-quality materials, aren’t treated with harmful chemicals, and take into consideration fair labor practices and sustainability. The main certifications to note when shopping for wool blankets and throws are OEKO-TEX, Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), and Fair Trade. OEKO-TEX is a global certification that verifies that products have been tested for and are free from harmful chemicals. GOTS is the leading certification worldwide for verifying organic textile and natural fibers. Fair Trade is a label that certifies fair wages and ethical working conditions.

How to wash a wool blanket:

Wool is a fiber that you have to be mindful of when washing because it can result in irreversible shrinkage if you do it incorrectly. Generally, best practice is to spot clean stains and only wash your blanket if it really needs it. Otherwise, handwashing with a wool-specific detergent and laying flat to dry is the best bet, but definitely look at the specific blanket’s requirements before washing. Some of the blankets in this guide are hand-wash-only, while others are dry-clean or spot-clean only. A select few can go in the washing machine, but be sure to look at the specific instructions so you don’t accidentally shrink your blanket (i.e., washing with wool-safe detergent, on delicate, etc.). When in doubt, spot clean and air it out.

Our criteria:

  • ORGANIC & CLEAN | Each of these blankets is made of natural or recycled wool and other natural materials. Many of the options below come with third-party certifications to guarantee consumer safety like GOTS and Oeko Tex.
  • COMFORT | Our editors have done extensive research on the brands and scoured online reviews to find the best comfortable wool blankets for every style and budget.
  • ENVIRONMENT | Each brand on this list takes care of its employees and the earth. These companies are committed to caring for the environment and to safe labor practices.
