The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

Our team of editors has spent the last twelve years testing the best non toxic mattresses across price points. These are our top selections in 2026.

We spend nearly a third of our lives sleeping — and there’s no better place to invest in our well-being! 😴

Over the last decade, our editorial team has reviewed dozens of organic and non toxic mattresses in our own homes and with our own families. In addition to hands-on testing, we regularly tour mattress factories in person, investigate proper certification and material use, interview the brands’ leadership teams, scour online reviews, and annually survey our audience for up-to-date consumer preferences.

Why choose an organic mattress?

Organic mattresses use certified organic materials, including natural wool, latex, and cotton. They avoid the risks of harmful substances that may harm immunity, hormone health, and the nervous system. “Repeated exposure to harmful chemicals in some traditional mattresses can impact your health, starting with how well you sleep. Some of these chemicals can contribute to symptoms including skin and respiratory irritation, hormone disruption, effects on your nervous system, and even impaired immune function,” emphasizes Dr. Jaclyn Tolentino. Having a safer sleep environment is especially important to vulnerable sleepers like young children, as 2025 research published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology shows.

Organic materials and production practices also ensure a more eco-friendly environmental impact. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the primary global body that governs a rigorous certification process for organic fibers, but we’ve outlined all the relevant organic certifications. While many companies may use words like “natural” and ”organic” as unfounded marketing terms, less than 2% of mattresses on the market actually receive organic certifications.

What Does “Non Toxic” Actually Mean?

You’ll often find brands touting the use of non toxic materials — but that doesn’t actually promise us anything. This is a form of greenwashing, which, as clean living expert Lindsay Dahl explains in her book Cleaning House, is a marketing tactic brands use to persuade customers that the product is safe for their homes.

“‘Nature-made’ or ‘non toxic’ or ‘clean’ doesn’t mean that any criteria were met for quality or safety,” writes Dahl. “It’s simply language that makes the customer think that the product is harmless and good for them.”

Instead, what’s most important is the certifications behind the claims, like GOTS, GOLS, and UL GREENGUARD Gold, and many more listed below, that are verified by third party testing and review. So, while “non toxic” isn’t inherently a bad word or descriptor, it’s not enough to guarantee that the mattress you buy is truly sustainable or organic.

What is our review process?

10 testers

90+ nights tested per mattress

3 sleep experts

6 factory tours

1,200 the good trade readers surveyed

Each mattress on this list has been individually reviewed by one of our editors. Unlike other review sites, we don’t order mattresses to a showroom; we actually bring these beds into our homes and sleep on them for months (or years!) to test long-term comfort and durability. Our top considerations are health and safety, comfort, environmental impact, durability, and long-term value. In addition to hands-on testing, we regularly tour mattress factories, investigate certifications, interview brands, scour online reviews, and survey our own readers for your preferences.

Rest assured, every non toxic mattress on this list has received rigorous certifications for safety and eco-friendly production and has been tested firsthand by one or more of our editors. This guide has also been medically reviewed by Dr. Jaclyn Tolentino, a board-certified family physician.

Our criteria:

  • ORGANIC CERTIFICATIONS | Every mattress on this list has received rigorous certifications for safe materials and eco-friendly production; each brand’s specific certifications are listed in the icon section above their feature. None of the mattresses on this list contain harsh flame retardants, and all are free from toxic chemicals, PFAS, VOCs, and fiberglass.
  • COMFORT | Comfort is key, so we try each mattress ourselves, spend hours scouring online reviews, and represent all the feedback from our readers that we collect through surveys, comments, and emails. The brands on this list are here because they are organic and people love to sleep on them.
  • AFFORDABLE | Every brand on this list sells directly to the consumer online and ships the mattress to your home, removing retail costs and reducing the final price. We’ve provided a range of options, from budget to luxury, without compromising safety.
  • ECO-FRIENDLY & GIVE BACK | All of the brands on this list employ eco-friendly production practices that help reduce water pollution, sequester carbon in the soil, and support biodiversity. Many of these companies also give back to their communities by donating high-quality organic mattresses to housing shelters and families in need.

Avocado stands out as one of the best organic mattresses thanks to its certified materials, comfort, and transparency — and it’s our editors’ top pick. It’s the kind of grown-up purchase that’s truly transformed our sleep, with noticeably better rest (and improved sleep scores) across our team.

Co-founders Alex and Jeff D’Andrea couldn’t find an affordable, safe, and truly non toxic mattress for their family — one free from petroleum-based polyurethane foams, toxic flame retardants, chemical adhesives, and off-gassing VOCs. In a marketplace filled with greenwashing and white-labeled beds, Avocado stands apart by owning its entire supply chain while meeting the most rigorous standards for health and sustainability. Each organic mattress is handmade in California using GOTS-certified organic cotton and wool from India, and GOLS-certified organic latex from India and Guatemala. Some premium models even include plush FSC-certified Pure Talalay latex. Every Avocado mattress is GREENGUARD Gold Certified for low emissions and built for a wide range of sleepers — from side to stomach to back.

The brand also offers a vegan-certified mattress, an organic cotton mattress protector, a waterproof mattress protector, and a wide range of sustainably made solid wood furniture. As a member of 1% for the Planet, Avocado gives back to environmental and social nonprofits, is a Certified B Corporation, and is Climate Neutral Certified. Our editors have personally reviewed the flagship mattress, the luxurious plush mattress, the budget-friendly Eco Organic mattress, and the popular Eco Organic Kids Mattress.

This year, our team of editors visited the Avocado mattress facility in Fullerton, CA, where we joined the co-CEO of Avocado Green Brands, Vy Nguyen, for a tour to see how these mattresses get made. We also saw a demo of hand needle-tufting, where long steel needles thread cotton straps through the mattress to secure the layers in place without glue. It’s a highly skilled, time-intensive process that keeps natural materials from shifting and improves durability.

Kayti Christian has long brown hair and bangs, wearing a black turtleneck and hoop earrings, smiles softly in front of a plain background.

Our Editor’s Review of Avocado

“Somewhere between entering my 30s and settling into the city I plan to call home for the foreseeable future, I realized I needed to stop buying Ikea mattresses off Craigslist. I ultimately decided on Avocado’s Pillow-Top mattress (featuring a Euro-style button-tufted pillow top) since my husband and I are both side sleepers. It’s an added expense but ultimately worth it, in my opinion, since you don’t need to add your own topper. I felt supported and snuggled in. […] Since receiving the Green Mattress, I’ve been getting better rest, and my sleep scores have reflected that. My chiropractor has noticed my spine health is looking great, too. My husband loves the mattress as well, and he’s a hard sell when it comes to mattresses and pillows!”

Birch’s non toxic and organic mattress may just be the coziest mattress ever. The NYC-based brand boasts OEKO-TEX and Rainforest Alliance certifications and, for every mattress sold, Birch plants one tree through the National Forest Foundation. This green mattress is made with organic, natural, hypoallergenic, and anti-microbial materials, including a natural cotton cover, hygroscopic wool (from New Zealand), and sustainably-tapped latex to keep even the warmest sleeper cool. For support, the individually wrapped steel coils (steel made in the USA) offer extra comfort and optimized pressure relief. We’ve personally tested this mattress and found it soft and springy, while still feeling supportive (see that it’s a medium firmness) and offering excellent edge support. We especially love the support of the Birch Luxe! With all its awards and natural mattress components, Birch makes it easy to sleep soundly and safely.

Our Editorial Director, Emily, visited the 3Z manufacturing facility in early 2024 and got to see firsthand how Birch mattresses are made from start to finish. John Merwin, the CEO of 3Z and founder of Brooklyn Bedding led the tour for a select group of editors, answering our questions and even letting us get hands-on experience sewing edge seams on tufted mattress covers. (Did you know they pour their foam and make all their springs in-house? It’s quite the production!)

Randi Donahue is a woman with brown hair in a pink top sits near a window, reflecting on her latest mattress review, as a plant thrives in the background.

Our Editor’s Review of Birch

“After months of sleeping on our Birch Luxe mattress, my husband and I are well-rested and clear on what we’ve missed out on all these years. We are delighted with this mattress; our 8 and 10-year-old daughters agree. […] My only issue was the edge of the mattress, in other words the full perimeter reinforcement, was flipped up, almost like a lip around the edge of the bed; I believe it was still from the way it was shipped because it has since relaxed a bit, or at least I’ve gotten used to it now. This mattress helps me sleep better, so much so that I’ve gone from avoiding bedtime to looking forward to it. Now, I just have a more challenging time getting up. In addition to deeper, better-quality sleep, I’ve also noticed my body feels refreshed and ache-free. I also went from a restless side sleeper to a comfy combo sleeper — spending a good part of the night on my back and sans any pillow between my knees.”

PlushBeds is a leading online luxury mattress manufacturer and retailer, specializing in organic mattresses and non toxic bedding. All products are handcrafted in their GOLS and GOTS-certified organic production facility in California, with free shipping within the contiguous USA. Our Editorial Director, Emily, visited the PlushBeds facility in Camarillo, California, where she learned about how much the brand’s quality ethos is inspired by the most legacy mattress makers in Europe — and how, at the end of the day, quality is the name of the game. The company offers a thorough selection of certified organic and eco-friendly mattresses at accessible prices, especially through key holidays, so keep an eye out for their promotions (although the brand also has luxury mattresses at top-tier price points — trust us, we’ve experienced them firsthand and the quality is unmatched). Each of the brand’s mattresses is GREENGUARD Gold Certified, ensuring your bed has met some of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low chemical emissions (plus, the brand never uses PFAS in its production). The company also provides environmental scholarships for college students, gives back to environmental and social nonprofits, and offsets 100% of its carbon emissions via TerraPass. For side sleepers like us, PlushBeds’ memory foam options are among the best non toxic mattresses. It doesn’t give us too much — or too little — firmness. Medium is just right!

Kate Arceo, a woman with long brown hair smiles while wearing a white top.

Our Editor’s Review of PlushBeds

“After our first night of sleep on our Signature Bliss mattress, I noticed it was the first morning in weeks that I’d woken up without any aches and pains. Sometimes I’m not aware I’m not sleeping well until I get one really good night of sleep — anyone else? That’s how this particular morning was. Noticing how deeply I’d slept made me realize how poorly I’d been sleeping leading up until that point. […] Another noteworthy anecdote: Since sleeping on our new mattress, I’ve noticed a significant reduction in motion transfer. With a husband who tosses and turns and two little children who occasionally end up in between us, more nights than not I can feel at least one family member or another shifting around in our bed […] since upgrading to our PlushBeds mattress, the motion transfer is at an all-time low.”

The Bear Hybrid is a GREENGUARD Gold Certified mattress designed for athletes and the most active people. A luxury mattress with coils and cooling foams, it boasts a Celliant Sleep Technology to promote better sleep and faster muscle recovery. Bear’s mattresses are GREENGUARD Gold and CertiPUR-US certified, ensuring low VOCs and beds that are free from toxic chemicals and harsh flame retardants. In our testing, we’ve found the Bear Original to be an excellent budget-friendly option for back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel. The Bear Natural offers a cozy pillowtop feel on a firm base, making it a good option for people who toss and turn, since there’s low motion transfer. While most Bear models don’t offer the same organic certifications as the top three selections on this list, we still recommend it for its safety certifications and accessible price point.

Emily McGowan has short, light pink and blonde hair, and smiles, wearing a dark green top and a necklace.

Our Editor’s Review of Bear

“I’ve always been an unfussy sleeper, but something has changed this year as I barrel toward my 35th birthday: I am now a hot sleeper. So while there was a bit of an adjustment period with the deep tufts on the Bear Elite, they provide airflow underneath me and help alleviate my night sweats — a worthwhile tradeoff if you ask me. The cushy top offers softness without sacrificing stability, and I’ve noticed that I stay asleep more consistently throughout the night, without the anxious wakeups. If you’re looking for a range of fully organic certifications, you might want to check elsewhere; however, Bear mattresses are GREENGUARD Gold Certified, and made with CertiPUR-US® certified foams. As someone who is currently prioritizing performance, this aligns with my values!”

Purchasing a non toxic mattress is an investment, and it can feel daunting. But Awara makes it easy to take the leap with a 365-night trial, premium customer service, and a forever warranty. Our editor took the plunge with an Awara (and in her dream size, the Cal King!), and she and her husband have slept like babies and never looked back.

We love Awara’s natural luxury hybrid mattress for its breathability and organic components, as well as the nine-inch contouring support core for pressure relief. It’s firm yet plush, and we feel confident that the mattress is supporting our bodies and promoting a healthy night’s sleep. Its ability to keep hot sleepers cool at night is outstanding (hello, fellow sweaty sleepers! 👋), the latex is breathable, and the coils boost airflow. The mattress arrives at your door in a cardboard box, and it’s as easy as rolling it out and using the fabric handles to place it on your bed frame for a supremely cool and comfortable night’s sleep.

Langa Chinyoka has long braided hair, wears a white T-shirt and stands in front of a bookshelf.

Our Editor’s Review of Awara

I like a firm mattress, so the Awara mattress was perfect for me. It had just enough give (admittedly, I did do a bounce test and it passed with flying colors) while retaining its shape. I’ve been a tosser and turner my whole life, but I slept like a stone on my Awara. From someone who has been called a restless sleeper by everyone I have shared a bed with, this was a monumental achievement. If you prefer an ultra-plush feel, you might find the Awara too firm, even after you’ve slept on it for weeks or months. But for hot sleepers, I can’t recommend the Awara mattress enough. Is this how everyone else has been living during hot summers? I can’t believe cool sleepers have been gatekeeping this from me my whole life.”

Ashley D'Arcy has long brown hair and a visible tattoo on their upper arm and is sitting indoors.

Our Editor’s Review of Brentwood Home

“Brentwood Home’s Oceano mattress is medium soft, rated a 4.5/10, but with reinforcement from springs and edge protection. […] I have fewer aches and pains, and I feel so much more comfortable throughout the night. It’s brought me back to a sense of comfort that I thought I left behind in childhood. One thing to note is that this mattress measures in at 14 inches tall, adding 3+ inches to our existing setup. We might have to rethink our current platform bed frame, but it’s more than worth it!”

Saatva is a leading disruptor in the mattress industry. From latex to memory foam, the company has an impressive collection to fit every person’s sleep needs and, by cutting out retail commissions, the company can sell to consumers at a fraction of the cost. Saatva’s disruptive model extends beyond distribution: its non toxic mattresses are made with plant-based, eco-friendly materials and crafted in the USA. The company also gives back by donating hundreds of natural mattresses to high-need organizations nationwide.

Several of our editors rave about the luxury innerspring mattress — it’s their forever pick. For a memory foam mattress comparable to iComfort and Tempur-Pedic (but at a fraction of the cost), we love Loom & Leaf, Saatva’s memory foam line. While memory foam is not an all-natural material, these mattresses are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning the foam is low in VOCs. For a latex option, Saatva’s Zenhaven Mattress is 100% all-natural Talalay latex, which is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to mold, microbes, and dust mites. The Talalay manufacturing process is entirely water-based, minimizing the amount of environmentally harmful byproducts.

Trinity Wilbourn has wavy hair, and is wearing a white top and necklaces, gazes upward thoughtfully.

Our Editor’s Review of Saatva

“Saatva’s Classic Mattress in Luxury Firm features a patented Lumbar Zone® Technology and responsive dual-coil design made of recycled carbon steel meaning it’s super supportive and will never sag. Nowadays, when I wake up in the morning, I am neither creaky nor cranky and my lower back pain is gone. I recommend this mattress if you suffer from back pain, are a side sleeper who prefers a firmer option, or you want to win at life! If you want a super squishy mattress, or something super firm, you’ll want to opt for a different firmness and perhaps a different mattress altogether.

Our Editor’s Review of Leesa

“After sleeping on it for a couple of weeks, our Leesa x West Elm Natural Hybrid Mattress feels even more comfortable and slightly contoured to our bodies. My husband and I have both been sleeping more soundly, and any of those minor neck or shoulder pains we’ve had have gone away (!). We credit this to the uniquely designed, individually encased springs. They adjust to the body during the night, so you’re supported in any position you find yourself in. I’ve found it makes a huge difference in how good I’m feeling in my body during the day. This mattress is considered medium-firm due to the supportive spring interior, but it feels more plush overall. If you’re looking for an extra firm mattress, this could be too soft.

Stephanie Fallon has long brown hair wearing a black top, and stands in front of a blue wall, adding charm to the serene setting.

Our Editor’s Review of My Green Mattress

“The Pure Eco mattress has just enough plushness on top to give that delicious, sinking-into-a-cloud feeling without being a bean bag that destroys your back. The feeling of this mattress is on par with memory foam, only it’s not made of the synthetic, chemical stuff. Instead, this mattress features a pocketed coil spring system that provides added lumbar and edge support designed for overall comfort for kids and adults up to 400 lbs. The 1 1/4″ layer of GOTS-certified organic and OEKO-TEX certified dunlop latex gives that sink-your-toes-in feeling while being eco-friendly and PFAS-free. After about an hour of too-excited-to-sleep zoomies, our daughter crashed into one of her deepest sleeps on her first night. She’s reported nothing but love for her bed every night since!”

Plus, all of their mattresses are formaldehyde-free and made without PFAS or chemical flame retardants while still maintaining flammability standards. (Psst — the brand’s crib mattresses are waterproof without the use of harmful chemicals, too!)

While Naturepedic mattresses do run on the more expensive side, you can count on the fact that you’re getting one of the best non toxic mattresses, made responsibly and sustainably in the USA, that will last you decades.

Our Editor’s Review of Naturepedic

“In my research, I found the hypoallergenic properties of latex mattresses are good for people who are sensitive to smells and have allergies (aka me). Since switching to Naturepedic, my sleep has been great (and my fiancé reported his sleep has improved too!). We both noticed the lack of motion transfer — feeling each other move in the middle of the night — and loved the luxury feel of it. And when I had a two-day migraine, it was fantastic to have a mattress that kept me cool and supported my head, neck, and back while I rested — especially because I feel extra sensitive to pressure, heat, and other stimuli during those times. Drawbacks include the high price tag and the fact that this mattress is quite heavy, so find some help for bringing it in, unboxing it, and setting it up!”

Our editors’ top considerations when shopping for an organic mattress:

There are now over 175 bed-in-a-box mattress brands to choose from 🤯. Selecting a new mattress is totally daunting! Especially since, as Dr. Matthew Walker, Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley writes, “[S]leep is the single most effective thing we can do to reset our brain and body health each day.” Mattress shopping is an incredibly personal decision — and a steep investment — so it’s important to find the perfect fit. (Of course, our favorite brands listed above offer sleep trials to make sure you’re completely satisfied, but it’s never fun having to coordinate the return of a mattress that didn’t work out for you.) Here’s a look at what factors you might consider depending on the type of sleep preferences you have!

As Dr. Michael Breus, clinical psychologist and sleep medicine expert, notes: “When putting together the ideal sleep environment, it’s not just about optimizing temperature, humidity, noise, and light. Having the right mattress, pillows, and bedding can also help you feel relaxed and ready for a good night’s rest.”

Start your search with a budget and mattress size in mind, which may help you narrow down the type of mattress within your price range before considering other factors. We’ve listed the types of mattresses below in order from least expensive to most expensive.

When do you know it’s time to get a new mattress?

Most mainstream mattresses will last 7–10 years in your home, but there are a few other indicators that might mean it’s time to get a new one. First, inspect your mattress for visible wear and tear — are there any points that sag, or new lumps that aren’t supposed to be there? Does the mattress squeak or creak when you roll over on it? Then, consider the quality of your sleep in the past few months. New aches and pains (especially in your shoulders, neck, and back), increased allergy sensitivities, or poor sleep quality in general might indicate that it’s time to get shopping. And, maybe, even make an upgrade to an organic mattress!

Which type of mattress should you choose?

  • Innerspring mattresses are ideal for people who prefer a more traditional mattress feel (think: a little bouncy), and for folks who tend to sleep hot thanks to the good airflow around the springs.
    • Pros: Often more affordable, supportive, and breathable
    • Cons: You might notice squeaking or creaking, there’s not much motion isolation (so you’ll feel it if your partner tosses and turns), and innerspring mattresses may wear out faster than other types
  • Memory Foam mattresses are excellent for side sleepers and people who deal with joint pain. The foam offers greater motion isolation than innersprings do, which means you won’t wake up if your bedmate moves or gets up a lot.
    • Pros: Contours to your body, offering motion isolation and pressure relief
    • Cons: Can retain heat (watch out, hot sleepers), and depending on the materials, you might experience off-gassing odors
  • Hybrid mattresses offer a balance of innerspring and foam mattresses. We think of them as the “Goldilocks beds” because they’re just right for a wide range of people. You’ll get support and comfort no matter how you sleep (especially if you sleep in multiple positions!).
    • Pros: A balance of support and comfort (not too firm or soft)
    • Cons: Can be heavy depending on the materials used, and more expensive because of the multiple components
  • Latex mattresses offer similar contouring and support to memory foam, making them a good choice for people sensitive to odors or with allergies. Latex is also naturally well-ventilated, making it a great choice for hot sleepers. And, of course, latex is a natural material, so you can feel better about the eco-impact of your mattress. You can find a complete list of all-latex mattresses here. Both Dunlop and Talalay latex are good options — because of their different production methods, Dunlop will be more dense and Talalay will tend to be lighter and bouncier. Dunlop latex can be made with all-natural materials, unlike Talalay, which needs synthetic additives, which means Dunlop latex is the only option that can receive an organic certification.
    • Pros: Hypoallergenic, responsive without being too bouncy (or making you feel like you’ve sunk into quicksand, like some memory foam), and has impressive durability for many years of use
    • Cons: All-natural latex mattresses can get very heavy if they’re not mixed with other materials and often carry the highest price tags

Which firmness should you look for?

  • Back Sleepers typically enjoy medium-firm to firm mattresses. For support and spinal alignment, look for memory foam, latex, and firmer hybrid mattresses.
  • Side Sleepers will typically sleep well on soft to medium mattresses. Look for softer memory foam and hybrid mattresses to relieve pressure on your shoulders and hips.
  • Stomach Sleepers will likely snooze best on firm mattresses. Look for firm innerspring and foam mattresses that reduce sinking so you can keep your spinal alignment.
  • What if you’re not sure? You can tell if a mattress is too soft for your needs if you feel stuck or unsupported, experience back pain or stiffness, or overheat due to sinking in too much. If a mattress is too firm, you’ll notice aching in your pressure points like hips, shoulders, and knees (or even numbness or tingling). You might also notice that you toss and turn when you’re trying to sleep, or that there’s a large gap under your lower back when you lay flat on the bed.

Other important considerations when choosing a mattress:

  • Are you a sweaty sleeper? Hot sleepers will like the breathability of latex, hybrid, and innerspring mattresses. If you do opt for foam, look for gel-infused or open-cell foam for extra airflow. If looking into hybrid mattresses, we recommend looking for ones with natural fabrics in the top layers — like organic cotton, wool, and natural latex.
  • For cold sleepers, beds that you sink into will cover a larger surface area of your body (so think soft!), and you’ll benefit from the heat retention qualities of memory foam and other foam mattresses.
  • If you snore, consider mattresses compatible with adjustable bed frames to elevate your head and improve airflow. Research has shown that even a 12-degree incline can be an unobtrusive way to reduce snoring and help you sleep through the night.
  • If you have allergies, consider hypoallergenic mattresses made from organic latex and bamboo viscose or rayon. These materials also help protect against dust mites!
  • Consider your preference between hand-tufting and other methods of layer bonding, such as glue. Some brands may use glues that won’t last as long as a quality tuft, or may contain toxic ingredients that you don’t want in your mattress.
  • Warranties typically cover factory defects but may not cover standard wear and tear. Check with your mattress maker before deciding to see if you’ll be covered down the line if the mattress wears in ways you don’t like!
  • If you tend to roll around a bit at night or want to maximize the usable surface of your mattress, look for models that offer a high level of edge support, which can help keep you on the bed. This is also handy if you have mobility issues and need extra firmness when getting out of bed in the morning.

What certifications ensure a mattress is organic or non toxic?

While there are a range of natural materials that offer non toxic sleep, we look for brands that carry additional certifications to ensure their mattresses are as safe as they claim to be. Here are the certifications we look for when evaluating organic (and sustainable) mattresses.

  • GOTS Certified: The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the gold standard for organic cotton, wool, and other textile components. Only textile products made from 95% certified organic raw materials can become GOTS Certified. There are also stringent worker protections that ban exposure to toxic chemicals and child or forced labor. Because GOTS’ rigorous certification requires environmental and social criteria across the entire textile supply chain, it is the gold standard for ensuring health and safety.
  • GOLS Certified: The Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) ensures that the latex in your mattress (and pillows) contains more than 95% of certified organic raw material. Similar to GOTS, GOLS also requires both environmental and social criteria throughout the entire textile supply chain.
  • MADE SAFE: MADE SAFE is a non toxic certification for everyday products, like mattresses, bedding, and skincare. This certification is extremely stringent, and every product is screened to validate that over 6,500 substances on the banned and restricted list have been avoided or constrained, eliminating the worst hazards commonly found in products used in our homes and daily routines.
  • GREENGUARD Certified: A GREENGUARD Certification means that your mattress meets some of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into indoor air. GREENGUARD Gold certification ensures the lowest emissions and off-gassing (making it especially good for folks who might be extra sensitive).
  • OEKO-TEX Certified: OEKO-TEX is a consistent, independent testing and certification system that ensures every component in a mattress is free from harmful substances (from raw materials to the final product).
  • CertiPUR-US: While CertiPUR-US doesn’t consider organic or natural materials, it does set a non toxic standard for the flexible polyurethane foam used in many hybrid and memory foam mattresses. This certification ensures that foams meet safety standards and are free of ozone-depleting substances, flame retardants, mercury, lead, formaldehyde, and phthalates, and have low VOC emissions.
  • B Corporation: B Corporations meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. Organizations must be verified through B Lab, a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring a fair and sustainable global economy to become a B Corp.
  • Climate Neutral Certified: Climate Neutral Certified brands measure and offset their entire carbon footprint and implement plans to reduce future emissions — we look for these when searching for more sustainable options. Some companies even claim to be carbon-negative by removing more carbon than they emit, although that is not an official certification.
  • Fair Trade Certification: One of the most rigorous social standards, the Fair Trade certification means that materials are sourced ethically and workers are paid fair wages.
  • USDA Certified Organic: The USDA Organic seal assures consumers that raw materials like cotton or wool are 95% or more organic. This seal does not cover any chemicals used in the production process, or the entire mattress like GOTS does.
  • eco-INSTITUT Certification: The eco-INSTITUT label is awarded to mattresses that have been tested for harmful substances, odors, and emissions in order to ensure healthier indoor air quality.
  • FSC Certified: The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) examines wood components like bed frames, as well as paper packaging materials. This certification ensures that these products come from responsibly managed forests.
  • PETA-Approved Vegan: The PETA-Approved Vegan certification assures shoppers that no animal products were used in the manufacturing process (such as wool, down, or leather). Many organizations offer other vegan certifications, too, like the Vegan Action certification. Just make sure that the entire mattress is vegan — not just a handful of the components.
  • 1% for the Planet: Members of 1% for the Planet donate 1% of annual sales to environmental causes, which is a bonus when we’re looking for sustainable bedding options.

What are common harmful substances found in traditional mattresses?

While you can find more affordable mattresses than the options on this list, it’s important to recognize that not all mattresses are created equal. Most conventional mattresses available online and in-store contain harmful substances that affect your home’s air quality and your health through chronic, long-term exposure. Here are a few to look out for:

  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are gases emitted from certain solids or liquids, including many synthetic materials used in mattresses. (They’re also common in paints!) VOCs have health impacts ranging from mild irritation and nausea to liver, kidney, and central nervous system damage. Some VOCs are even known carcinogens.
  • Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals used in some mattresses and furniture for their water and stain-resistant properties. Research on these “forever chemicals” by the CDC and the EPA has linked PFAS to liver damage, thyroid disease, decreased fertility, high cholesterol, obesity, hormone suppression, and cancer.
  • Chemical flame retardants, like brominated or halogenated flame retardants, are added to mattresses to ensure they meet fire safety standards. These flame retardants have been linked to health issues such as endocrine disruption, neurodevelopmental issues, and cancer, especially in vulnerable populations like infants or the elderly.
  • Fiberglass is used in some mattresses as an inexpensive flame retardant, but fiberglass fibers can be released into the air and environment if the mattress cover is removed or torn. Aside from short-term irritation, chronic inhalation of fiberglass can worsen respiratory conditions like asthma or bronchitis.
  • Polyurethane is a commonly used foam in mattresses, but it can release VOCs through off-gassing. (That new mattress smell? It might be the polyurethane!) This can cause respiratory irritation and headaches, and some research suggests potential endocrine disruption.

What is greenwashing?

Greenwashing is the practice of a company claiming to be more environmentally friendly—or non toxic—than it really is, often through misleading marketing language. This is particularly prevalent in the mattress industry, so our reviews focus only on brands that hold trusted third-party certifications like those listed above. Not every mattress will be perfect, but when it comes to such big investments in our daily routines and well-being, we want to know that the brands are accountable to outside sources for their claims about non toxic materials and sustainable production.

How to care for an organic mattress (and why they last longer!)

A mattress can be a steep investment — especially when you opt for an organic or natural one. But the perks of a well-crafted mattress include longevity: many of our favorite mattresses last 25+ years while maintaining quality and comfort. (And, compared to more “mainstream” brands that release more VOCs and can crumble as they age, you won’t get that funky smell or degradation with natural mattresses). That doesn’t mean you don’t have any upkeep; in order to keep your mattress cozy for the long haul, here’s how to best take care of it:

  • Always use a mattress protector to prevent spills from absorbing into the mattress (the number of times we’ve spilled coffee in bed has taught us this lesson firsthand).
  • Rotate and flip the mattress according to the manufacturer’s suggested timeline. Each timeline may differ, but the standard is to rotate once every three to six months.
  • Snuggle up with natural and organic bedding to get the most breathability out of your new mattress — it’s a game-changer!
  • Clean spills immediately (and use a mattress protector, as noted above) to keep your mattress dry and mold-free. If you live in a humid environment, consider getting a dehumidifier to reduce moisture retention.

How long will an organic mattress last?

Standard mattresses have a 7-10 year lifespan, but many organic options on our list feature lifespans of 25 years and longer! Some even offer lifetime warranties; that’s how deeply the brand stands behind their product. Review each brand’s recommendations for how frequently to replace your mattress, but know that generally, the higher the investment, the longer the mattress should last.

How does The Good Trade’s editorial team review mattresses?

The Good Trade’s editors are a diverse team of writers and sustainable product enthusiasts who offer trusted brand recommendations based on our hands-on testing and extensive research, including third-party verifications, certifications, and accreditations. We’re especially proud to be able to offer direct feedback to each brand to push their sustainability and non toxic certifications further to ensure our readers can *actually* get a healthier night’s sleep.

We’ve also personally tested and reviewed the best organic bedding brands, including mattress toppers, protectors, and pillows, so you can make the most informed decision. The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

I’ve reviewed dozens of organic pillows of various materials, sizes, shapes, and firmness over the years. These are ten standout options that are comfortable, durable, and safe to sleep on for any budget.

Our secret to getting deep sleep? Organic pillows with customized support. 😴

The pillows below are crafted from nontoxic materials and are adjustable for back, stomach, and side sleepers. No more pancake pillows or folding pillows in half! Quality pillows will last you longer, too — our team has owned some of the ones featured here for more than a year now, and they still are as good as new! This is because of the fibers’ superior quality and craftsmanship (many can be washed as well to keep them fresh). Don’t let the price tags scare you; we promise a nontoxic pillow is not only good for your health and sleep, but it’s a worthwhile investment.

Why consider nontoxic or organic pillows?

Unlike your traditional box store pillow, organic pillows are crafted from nontoxic materials, like pesticide-free cotton or chemical-free natural latex, so you’ll never have to worry about your health (or the health of the planet) while sleeping. Likewise, pillows made from high-quality materials are often more supportive, as they are crafted for specific sleepers and offer different fill options so you can customize your firmness. Studies show that having optimal support (and temperature, for that matter) is crucial to quality sleep and overall health.

How to choose the best pillow for your sleep style:

Choosing a nontoxic pillow doesn’t have to feel complicated! It really comes down to how you sleep and what feels good to your body. Start by thinking about your main sleep position: Side sleepers usually need a firmer, higher pillow to keep the neck aligned, back sleepers do best with medium support that cradles the natural curve of the neck, and stomach sleepers are often most comfortable with something soft and low-profile to minimize strain.

From there, look for clean, natural materials like organic latex, cotton, wool, or kapok, which offer great support without the chemical off-gassing found in many synthetic foams. Certifications like GOTS, GOLS, OEKO-TEX, or GREENGUARD Gold can give you peace of mind that your pillow is truly free from harmful chemicals. Bonus points if it’s breathable, adjustable, and has a washable cover to keep things fresh. When your pillow matches both your sleep style and your values, better rest tends to follow.

Our methodology & criteria:

I personally slept on each of the following pillows for multiple nights. I’ve provided notes on how restful my sleep was, along with thoughts on the material and overall comfort. We’ve also considered the materials used, how the pillow will hold up over time, and the social good each brand provides. Our top picks are based on the below criteria, and we’ll continue to update this piece with emerging favorites.

  • ORGANIC | Each of these brands uses non-toxic, organic materials with no off-gassing. None contain harsh flame retardants, and all are free from toxic chemicals. We also look for brands that are committed to not using PFAS in any of their production.
  • COMFORT | Comfort is key — we have tried each of these pillows (and oh so many more!) ourselves, spent hours reading online reviews, and, of course, we review all the comments and emails from our readers. The brands on this list are here because they are organic, and we love sleeping on them. Our favorites include a variety of sizes and plushness for the stomach sleeper, avid napper, and everyone in between!
  • PRICE | Each of the brands we’ve included offers a fair value for the cost of the pillow. We considered durability, longevity, and ease of cleaning.
  • SOCIAL GOOD | The brands below have a variety of social-good and environmental initiatives, and we love supporting them.

And while you’re giving your bedroom an eco-friendly boost, check out our guides to affordable organic mattresses, organic mattress toppers, organic mattress protectors, and organic bedding.

Our Editor’s Review | I’ve tried a lot of Avocado’s pillows, but I have to say the Grand Luxe Pillow is in a league of its own. Its mix of shredded Talalay latex and responsibly sourced down strikes the perfect balance of softness and support, with an adjustable loft that lets you fluff it just right. The organic cotton cover is soft, breathable, and machine washable, making luxurious sleep effortless. For something a little more affordable, the Pure Talalay Luxury Pillow is equally dreamy. It was also one of the cooler pillow options on our list, thanks to the organic wool. The cover is soft and cozy, and I love that it matches the organic cotton on our Birch mattress. Twinning!

3. Boll & Branch

American made
Cruelty free
Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Warranty offered

Best For | Hypoallergenic pillow
Organic Materials | Organic cotton
Firmness Available | Choice of soft, medium, or firm support

Like all Boll & Branch bedding and bath goods, the brand’s pillow collection is ethically and sustainably made under fair trade conditions. The luxury down alternative pillow is OEKO-TEX Certified, replacing feathers and other animal by-products by using allergy-friendly PrimaLoft fibers and 100 percent organic cotton covers.

Our Editor’s Review | I tried the down alternative pillow insert in medium density and found it to be incredibly soft and luxurious. That said, I recommend ordering the firm density if you’re looking for any type of support as this pillow is very soft. I also suggest adding the pillow protector to your order for easy laundering since this one doesn’t come with a removable cover.

4. Naturepedic

1% for the planet
FSC
GOTS certified
Gives back
Greenguard certified

Do you toss and turn while you sleep? Do you struggle to find the right position? Naturepedic’s organic adjustable pillow may be just what you need. This pillow also has adjustable latex fill, so you can easily adjust how firm it is. (It can get messy! So be cautious when you unzip it for the first time.)

Our Editor’s Review | What I loved most about Naturepedic’s pillow is the luxurious washable cover with one quilted side and the other side a cool and soft organic cotton. And the brand’s ethics are as versatile as the pillow itself: Organic materials, MADE SAFE certification, US ethical production, and support for 1% for the Planet. All in all, this was one of our favorite pillows on the list for the price point.

5. Coyuchi

1% for the planet
Eco friendly packaging
Gives back
Natural materials
Woman owned

Best For | Pillow for side sleepers
Organic Materials | GOLS Certified organic Dunlop latex, GOTS Certified organic cotton
Firmness Available | Medium-firm support

Coyuchi’s Molded Organic Latex Pillow, one of many Coyuchi offers, uses GOLS Certified organic Dunlop latex for a fresh night’s sleep. Best for back and side sleepers, this material is breathable, resistant to mold and mildew, and biodegradable. This is also one of the only pillows on the list to come without any plastic packaging (yay!). Instead, it arrived in a canvas bag, perfect for storage and protection when we’re not using it.

Our Editor’s Review | I wasn’t initially sure how I would sleep on this one with its unconventional shape — the side with the large hole is the bottom of the pillow and the two smaller holes are for your ears (perfect for that cartilage piercing or to reduce sleepy wrinkles!). All of the smaller holes help with airflow throughout the night. Here’s a video for visual reference. My verdict? While it can take a few nights to mold to your body (give it time!), this pillow is an excellent option if you’re a back sleeper or looking for additional neck support throughout the night.

6. Nest Bedding

Family owned
Natural materials
Vegan
Warranty offered

Best For | Adjustable support pillow
Organic Materials | Non-Toxic CertiPUR-US® Certified Virgin Foam and breathable cotton
Firmness Available | Adjustable fill for soft, medium, or firm support

Struggling to break up with your memory foam pillow but searching for a more sustainable option? Nest Bedding has you covered. With more than 20k reviews, the Easy Breather Pillow is the brand’s most popular pillow and has adjustable, nontoxic and virgin foam fill (custom support and better sleep for the win). The Easy Breather even comes with a complimentary fill bag to store what you don’t use. And thanks to its unique design, this one has that cool “other side of the pillow” feel. The cooling fabric disperses heat and wicks away excess moisture.

Our Editor’s Review | I tried the down alternative pillow and I was a bit hesitant when I first opened the box. For starters, the brand notes no to low scent from the fill, but I noticed an immediate fish-like smell. Not a deal breaker, but it’s something to keep in mind. As I’m generally someone who needs a lot of extra support from her pillow, this one seemed like it would be a bit too pancake-y for me. After a few hours though, the pillow fluffed right up and I was pleasantly surprised by the provided comfort. I’d likely still opt for something a bit firmer, but this is a great option if you’re looking to replace your memory foam and prefer a soft pillow!

7. Saatva

Natural materials
Warranty offered

Best For | Luxury hotel-style pillow
Organic Materials | Organic cotton and American Talalay latex
Firmness Available | Medium-Plush Support

Discounts Available | Now when you purchase a mattress at Saatva, you’ll save $300 at checkout (when your purchase is over $1,000)

Saatva wins for the most luxurious pillow on the list. And if you suffer from spine or neck pain, a few nights on this pillow may be a game-changer. It’s made in the USA with a dreamy combo of organic cotton and naturally breathable latex, and is basically a five-star hotel for your head. It’s cool, cushy, and crafted with clean materials—so you can sleep easy in every sense.

Our Editor’s Review | I tried the Queen size, which comes with two (yes two!) removable covers and an inner pillow. It’s soft yet supportive, and the brand isn’t bluffing when it says “hotel-quality comfort”. Talk about a good night’s sleep. As for materials, the organic and eco-friendly pillow is crafted with 100 percent organic cotton and 100 percent sustainable American Talalay latex. And if you learn it’s not for you, you can leverage Saatva’s 45-day return policy.

8. Sol Organics

BIPOC Owned
Fair trade
Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Small business
Vegan

Best For | Pillow for stomach sleepers
Organic Materials | GOTS Certified cotton and natural fibers
Firmness Available | Choice of soft, medium, or firm support

Proudly based out of Canada, Sol Organics wants to make ethical luxury accessible. The brand uses responsibly grown and harvested white down with 100 percent GOTS Certified cotton down proof to create a hypoallergenic filling that is both light and breathable.

Our Editor’s Review | My Sol Organics pillow arrived in a plastic carry bag, which I appreciated for the added protection (but of course would have preferred no plastic). I ordered the firm for side sleepers and found it to be a bit too soft for my preference — though it has a nice plushness. I recommend this option for stomach sleepers or if you are seeking a pillow you can really sink into.

9. Earthfoam

American made
Budget friendly
Fair trade
Family owned
GOTS certified
Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Recycled materials
Warranty offered

Best For | Pressure-relieving pillow
Organic Materials | Natural foam rubber and two outer layers of soft organic cotton
Firmness Available | Squishy with firm head support

For a budget-friendly pillow that doesn’t compromise on comfort or design, we look no further than Earthfoam’s squishy cloud-like pillow. It’s a dream for those of us who need extra head support — no more folding floppy pillows in half! — and we love that the brand boasts several internationally recognized certifications for fair trade, organic, safety, and emissions standards.

Our Editor’s Review | I put this pillow to the test for a few night’s of sleep and let me tell you: The squishy factor does not disappoint! As someone who is notorious for stacking pillows upon pillows for extra support, Earthfoam’s natural foam core was all that I needed for a peaceful night of rest. Let’s just say, this one may keep me from making frequent trips to the chiropractor.

Our Editor’s Review | NaturalMat also ships to the USA via the brand’s US site, so I was excited to try the Organic Wool Pillow (twin), which is equivalent in size to the standard wool pillow on the UK site. It arrived in paper packaging (protected by plastic) and came with a canvas bag for additional storage and protection. This pillow is firm, and temperature-regulating. We loved our night’s sleep with it.

We’ve researched and tested dozens of sustainable couches over the years — these are our top picks for green velvet sofas and couches that are durable and nontoxic from thoughtful brands.

Anyone else feeling ready to leave the gray days of interior decorating behind? Want to make a bold move that speaks to how you’re both grounded and ready to live fearless and free? Bring on the green velvet sofa. 💚

Green is the new gray, a go-to for anchor pieces that can range from a cozy neutral to a jewel-toned showstopper. It’s minimalist, it’s maximalist, and the trend has been growing since celebrities (hey J.Lo and Emily Ratajkowski!) started posting selfies lounging against the luscious, light-catching glow of their green velvet couches.

Go moss green for a low-key relaxed vibe, bold with a lime green à la the Memphis Group, or choose a refined pear for a glamorous summer-in-the-Hamptons look. Here’s a quick tip on styling: Green is a versatile color best off-set with other neutrals like black, white, cream, gray-blue, and anything in the copper-colored family. Since oxidized copper goes green over time, the two make a great pair. Honestly, pair it with whatever the heck you want and it will play — it’s nice like that.

Why consider sustainable velvet for your couch?

When it comes to buttery velvet, there is just one downside: It turns out that many velvet production practices are harmful for the environment. Velvet can be woven from any type of yarn (silk, cotton, wool) but to cut costs, is most often woven from synthetic fibers like polyester or nylon. These plastic-based materials never biodegrade. And because velvet requires multiple production steps (read: Resource-sucking), it uses more yarn than most other fabrics and is often treated with stain repellant — meaning the output can be well…less than green. To combat this, a better sustainable option is opting for velvet couches that are made with recycled materials and carry trusted certifications to ensure they’re free from toxic chemicals like PFAS and flame retardants.

What are the relevant certifications?

For a velvet sofa that’s actually as good for your home as it is for the planet, certifications are your best shortcut. Labels like GREENGUARD Gold mean the couch gives off fewer harmful fumes like VOCs, helping keep your indoor air cleaner. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is also a big one for velvet — it tells you the fabric is free from harmful chemicals and safe for direct skin contact. If the couch frame is made with FSC-certified wood, that’s even better, as you’ll know it came from responsibly managed forests. And for those plush cushions, CertiPUR-US ensures the foam is made without toxic flame retardants or heavy metals. Together, these certifications take the guesswork out of sustainability, letting you relax on a sofa that’s as thoughtful as it is beautiful.

So if you love the green velvet sofa but you also love our green earth, we’re here to help!

Our criteria:

Our editors have personally tested and researched dozens of sustainable furniture brands, and vetted thousands of customer reviews, to select our top picks for green velvet sofas and couches. We’ve chosen brands that are sustainable, ethical, built to last, and above all make beautiful green velvet couches that we love to lounge on.

  • NONTOXIC/ORGANIC | We’ve chosen brands that use bio-based yarns like 100% organic cotton, bamboo, lyocell, or linen as well as thoughtfully sourced and treated metals and wood. We’ve noted the corresponding certifications so you can be sure you’re getting the best of the best.
  • ETHICS | The brands on this list use responsible labor and production practices, and many have thoughtful give back programs as well.
  • DURABLE | Sustainable commitments mean higher quality products that will last you a long time, if not a lifetime. These couches have proven to hold up against daily wear and tear.

Our editors have reviewed dozens of organic and sustainable blankets — these are our favorite wool blankets made with natural materials to keep you warm and cozy this winter.

There’s nothing cozier than cuddling up with a warm blanket in the wintertime. And whether you’re using them to stay warm at night or to snuggle up on the couch and read, wool blankets are the ultimate cold-weather staple. We’ve rounded up the best wool blankets on the market — from cashmere to merino to recycled wool — prioritizing those made with sustainable and natural materials and ethical sourcing and work environments.

Why choose a wool blanket?

Wool is a warm yet breathable material. It keeps you nice and cozy without overheating. It’s also a naturally wicking fiber, so if your household is prone to spilling, they’re less likely to stain and instead wick the liquids right off. Wool is also odor-resistant and antimicrobial, so your blankets won’t retain odor or bacteria from children or pets. Along with all of these properties, wool blankets are also very durable, so as long as you take care of them, they’ll last you a long time.

Cashmere and alpaca wool are also hypoallergenic, which makes these a great blanket option for people who are sensitive and have allergies. Wool blankets also have a wonderful natural fiber feel, ranging from slightly scratchy to ultra-soft, and you can find a blanket that feels dreamy to you.

Lastly, wool blankets are made from natural materials, making them a more sustainable option than blankets made from synthetic materials. Wool is a renewable fiber because sheep, goats, and alpacas grow new coats every season. The blankets in this list are sourced from regenerative and mindful sources that prioritize sustainability throughout the production process.

What should you look for when shopping?

The biggest thing to look for when shopping for wool blankets is certifications that ensure the blankets are made with high-quality materials, aren’t treated with harmful chemicals, and take into consideration fair labor practices and sustainability. The main certifications to note when shopping for wool blankets and throws are OEKO-TEX, Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), and Fair Trade. OEKO-TEX is a global certification that verifies that products have been tested for and are free from harmful chemicals. GOTS is the leading certification worldwide for verifying organic textile and natural fibers. Fair Trade is a label that certifies fair wages and ethical working conditions.

How to wash a wool blanket:

Wool is a fiber that you have to be mindful of when washing because it can result in irreversible shrinkage if you do it incorrectly. Generally, best practice is to spot clean stains and only wash your blanket if it really needs it. Otherwise, handwashing with a wool-specific detergent and laying flat to dry is the best bet, but definitely look at the specific blanket’s requirements before washing. Some of the blankets in this guide are hand-wash-only, while others are dry-clean or spot-clean only. A select few can go in the washing machine, but be sure to look at the specific instructions so you don’t accidentally shrink your blanket (i.e., washing with wool-safe detergent, on delicate, etc.). When in doubt, spot clean and air it out.

Our criteria:

  • ORGANIC & CLEAN | Each of these blankets is made of natural or recycled wool and other natural materials. Many of the options below come with third-party certifications to guarantee consumer safety like GOTS and Oeko Tex.
  • COMFORT | Our editors have done extensive research on the brands and scoured online reviews to find the best comfortable wool blankets for every style and budget.
  • ENVIRONMENT | Each brand on this list takes care of its employees and the earth. These companies are committed to caring for the environment and to safe labor practices.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

We’ve reviewed organic bedding brands over the past 10 years — these are our top picks for organic flannel sheets, selected for their warmth, durability, and softness.

On the coldest nights of the year, when our fingers and toes feel utterly frozen, there’s nothing quite as comforting as slipping into a warm bed topped with flannel sheets. Within minutes, we’re toasty and cocooned in for the evening. And getting out of bed in the morning? Let’s just say it’s a challenge.

What is organic flannel made from?

Organic flannel is a cozy, sustainable fabric made from natural fibers, most commonly organic cotton, though it can also include other fibers, such as eucalyptus lyocell. Organic flannel is the better choice for our beds because the materials used to make it are grown or sourced without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Unfortunately, conventional cotton flannel sheets are often treated with pesticides, herbicides, and harmful dyes. (That also means farmers who grow cotton are exposed to these dangerous chemicals, and in some cases, poisoned in the process.) To avoid this, choosing organic flannel sheets is not only better for the environment but also safer for people and farmers, especially those with sensitive skin or allergies.

Organic cotton, the most popular base for organic flannel, is harvested and processed using eco-friendly methods that conserve water and energy. Once the cotton fibers are spun into yarn, they’re woven into a soft, slightly fuzzy texture that gives flannel its signature warmth and comfort. This “fuzziness” results from a specialized brushing process that raises the fibers on one or both sides of the fabric, making it ideal for cold-weather clothing, blankets, and sheets.

Eucalyptus-based flannel, made from eucalyptus lyocell, is a newer and exciting addition to the sustainable textiles market. Eucalyptus lyocell is derived from the wood pulp of eucalyptus trees, which are known for their fast growth and minimal need for water or pesticides. This makes eucalyptus an incredibly renewable resource. The process of making lyocell involves breaking down wood pulp into fibers using a non-toxic solvent in a closed-loop system, so 99% of the chemicals and water used are recycled back into production. This gives eucalyptus-based flannel not only a lower environmental footprint but also a silky, soft texture that feels luxurious against the skin. It’s breathable, moisture-wicking, and naturally resistant to bacteria, which makes it an excellent choice for bed sheets. Plus, it’s biodegradable, just like cotton and bamboo-based flannel!

Organic flannel, regardless of its base material, is often dyed with non-toxic, low-impact dyes, adding to its eco-friendly credentials. Whether you’re wrapping yourself in a flannel blanket on a crisp, cool day or snuggling under eucalyptus flannel sheets that feel like a cloud, you can feel good knowing that organic flannel is a healthier and more sustainable choice for you and the planet. ☁️ 💤

Our editors have researched and reviewed the best products for better sleep. These are our picks for sunrise alarm clocks to help you rise feeling refreshed.

Much like their names, alarms can feel alarming. If you find your morning wakeup routine needs a more calming refresh, consider investing in a sunrise alarm clock. Sometimes referred to as “dawn simulators,” these gently and gradually emit light to ease the transition from sleep to wakefulness. These make for a more natural wakeup experience, slowly preparing your body for the day ahead — no blaring alarm or cell phone needed.

What are the benefits of using a sunrise alarm clock?

  • Support circadian rhythm: Our biological clocks often rely on things like the sun to signal the time of day. But humans spend so much more time indoors, and sleep in ultra-dark conditions, meaning you need something to tell your body it’s time to wake up. These types of alarm clocks imitate real morning sunlight, gradually increasing light exposure over a period of time to signal the beginning of a new day.
  • Improve mood and energy: Exposure to sunlight has mood- and energy-boosting effects, and these clocks can help you get the best of both worlds — getting more “sun” without leaving your bed. Research has proven that “light exposure is associated with significant improvement in subjective alertness,” so you’ll feel more prepared and eager to start your day.
  • Enhancing overall sleep quality: Most people say they can never go back to life before their sunrise alarm clocks. After using them, happy customers report a better sleeping experience that allows them to achieve a more restful snooze each night. It can also help you develop a better natural sleep routine, for more comfort and consistency overall.

What should you look for in a sunrise alarm clock?

In addition to providing the key feature of gradually waking you up with more and more light exposure, we also sought out products with soothing sounds, non-WiFi capabilities, style-forward designs, and more.

Our criteria:

After researching, corresponding with brands, and combing through customer reviews, our editors have chosen the best sunrise alarm clocks to support your morning routine. We update this list regularly with emerging favorites, and all of our picks are evaluated to meet the following criteria.

  • SCIENCE-BACKED | All of the alarm clocks on this list use technology to emulate a natural wakeup cycle to better support your sleep and circadian rhythm, as backed by scientific findings.
  • EASY TO USE | The products on this list are easy to setup, use, and integrate into your daily life without added stress or hassle.
  • RECYCLED & NATURAL MATERIALS | We’ve prioritized brands that use recycled or natural materials, have give-back initiatives, and are thoughtful about sustainability overall.

Beyond alarm clocks, there are plenty of other ways to level up your sleep sanctuary. To further improve your environment, check out our guides to the best nontoxic mattresses, pillows, and clean bedding.

1. Loftie

Integrates with other apps and devices
Science backed
Small business

Best For | Sound variety
Features | Two-phase alarm, bedtime reminder, sleep sounds, adjustable night light, non-WiFi mode
Prices starting at |$170

Founded in 2018, New York-based company Loftie set out to accomplish one lofty task: Help people stay away from their phones and be more mindful about screentime. And while you do need your phone to complete the setup process, it becomes obsolete once your Loftie is ready to go. Pairing sound and light, the sunrise alarm clock has two phases: One that wakes you up with soft sounds and fades after 30 seconds, and another that “fully wakes you 3, 6, or 9 minutes later with a calm, continuous melody.”

The device is also loaded up with more than 100 sounds for a calming sleep experience, so you can use it as a white noise machine or to do some breathwork at the beginning or end of a long day. Its design is the cherry on top, as people are obsessed with the sleek and sophisticated look of the product, sharing that it only adds to their interior design.

Our Editor’s Review | “When it comes to function, I have to say I’ve never been woken so gently. The two-phase alarm is specifically designed to mimic the body’s natural waking process, and it’s so seamless I sometimes wake up feeling like I missed my alarm. (I never have.)” – Emily McGown, Editorial Director [Read her review.]

2. Hatch

Integrates with other apps and devices
Subscriptions available

Woman owned

Best For | Classic sunrise design
Features | Sleep sounds, night light, dimmable clock, free Hatch+ trial
Prices starting at |$170

Hatch originally started with two parents hoping to help families — and more specifically, babies — get better sleep. Over years, the collection has expanded with a more parent-friendly design. The Hatch Restore 3, now in its third generation, is a design- and wellness-forward sunrise alarm clock that shifts from red to orange to white before playing a sound to wake you up. The Restore 3 has basic features on its own, like a night light and dimmable clock, but your purchase also comes with a free trial of Hatch+, the company’s premium subscription service. This trial will unlock bonus content, such as music, meditations, and podcasts designed to help improve sleep. After the 30-day trial, you can purchase the subscription for $49.99 per year, and after the 7-day trial, you can pay $4.99 per month.

Similar to the Loftie, you’ll need your phone to register on the Hatch app, but phone-free usage is encouraged after that. Plus, it’s HSA/FSA eligible, and comes with a 30-night bedside trial so you can test it before fully committing.

Our Editor’s Review | “I’ve used my phone as my alarm clock for years, which has led to late-night scrolling and checking emails before getting out of bed. To help me break this habit, I tried the Hatch Restore 2 smart alarm clock. Now I sleep like a baby and I wake up more easily, too. I also love the additional features the product offers for meditation, winding down, and even calming your pets.” – Kayti Christian, Senior Content Strategist [Read her review.]

3. Lumie

Doctor approved
Science backed
Warranty offered

Best For | Budget
Features | Sunrise and sunset lighting, optional alarm beep, dimmable display
Prices starting at |$109

In the world of sunrise alarm clocks, Lumie is the OG. Founded back in 1991, the company was known as Outside In and sold light therapy lamps. By 1992, they released “the world’s first wake-up light, Natural Alarm Clock,” and in 2000, they launched the original Bodyclock. There are four sold on the Lumie site now, but the most basic and budget-friendly version is the Bodyclock Rise 100. Along with the sunrise feature, all Lumie clocks come with a “sunset” feature, allowing people to doze off comfortably at the end of the day. The Bodyclock Rise 100 has a 30-minute sunrise or sunset function and one optional alarm tone, while others support shorter and longer sessions and offer more special features.

With more than 30 years in the industry, it’s easy to see why so many people are drawn to Lumie’s lights and clocks. The generous 45-day trial and three-year warranty make it an even easier decision. Keep in mind there is only one style option for the Bodyclock Rise 100, and you need to program your device each day (though customers say it’s very easy to use).

Customer Review | “Easy to use once I got the hang of the menu and symbols. Wakes me gently in the dark mornings and helps me drift off with a sunset.” – ML (Read more reviews.)

4. Tala

B corp
Integrates with other apps and devices
Plant trees

Best For | Luxury
Features | 11 sounds, integrates with Google Home and Amazon Alexa, dimmable light
Prices starting at |$295

What happens when a sustainability-obsessed lighting company partners with renowned architect and designer Thomas Heatherwick? The most innovative, high design sunrise alarm clock ever: the Tala WAKE Sleep Light. “Our inspiration was drawn from the bulb and the light emitting element as a metaphor for the sun, and the base a natural metaphor for the earth,” Heatherwick wrote in a statement on the Tala website. Premium materials work together to make the rippled glass bulb and ceramic base look like a piece of art, but it functions similarly to its competitors. Wake up or unwind with the sunrise and sunset settings, and choose one of 11 total sounds provided.

A few other bonuses? Your purchase comes with free shipping, 28-day returns, and a three-year extended warranty. It’s significantly pricier than other sunrise alarm clocks on the market, but with the design visionaries involved, most customers see it as more than an alarm clock. A certified B Corp, they’re committed to mitigating climate change and have funded the planting of more than 130,000 trees through reforestation projects.

Customer Review | “The glow of the lamp is lovely to wake up to, and the controls are intuitive. It’s a delight to have something so sculptural and functional at the same time!” – Kathryn P. (Read more reviews.

5. Rise Center

Handcrafted
Natural materials
Small business

Best For | Minimalist design
Features | 30-minute sunrise simulation, night light, one alarm sound
Prices starting at |$179

Rise Center founder Emily Byrne admits she never intended to start a business. “I just wanted to leave my phone in another room,” she wrote on the company website. She had used sunrise alarm clocks in the past, but was always troubled by their long setup processes, subscriptions, and general aesthetic. Inspired by her pink Himalayan salt lamp, she merged the two ideas to create The Original Sunrise Alarm Clock. Handmade in small batches, the product is carved from real Himalayan salt (white or pink) and rests on a beech or walnut wood base.

Another device driven by both functionality and aesthetic, this holistic wellness product should seamlessly integrate with the rest of your room’s design. Minimalistic by nature, it has the sunrise feature, but can also work as a lamp or alarm clock (simply turn on the one alarm sound available). The product comes with a 30-day trial, though all returns come with a $20 processing fee and all exchanges cost $35. No Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connectivity is required to get started, and you can set only one alarm at a time.

Customer Review | “This is a very beautiful and well thought out product! We purchased the white salt lamp as it can get very dark in the winter where we live and it has improved our morning routine immensely. It is simple to use, simple to keep, and we love how unattached it is from the outside world. It is helping us keep our phones out of the bedroom and letting us stay detached from them throughout the morning. I highly recommend this product!” – Erin (Read more reviews.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

Our editors have slept on each of these nontoxic, organic bedding brands for months and provided their notes on safety, comfort, ease of care, and long-lasting durability.

There’s nothing sweeter than a good night’s sleep — and a comfortable bed situation is key in getting restorative rest. Natural, nontoxic bedding can help with that, plus it’s made from materials that are good for you and the planet.

The truth is that bedding made from synthetic materials can negatively impact your health, the environment, and the factory workers who make them. Polyester is a good example: It isn’t very breathable, it releases microplastics when washed, and its manufacturing process is highly polluting. Those aren’t exactly thoughts you want to dwell on as you’re trying to drift off. 😴

“Small changes in sleep hygiene can lead to massive improvements in energy, mood, and hormone function”

– Dr. Jaclyn Tolentino

Board-Certified Family Physician Dr. Jaclyn Tolentino also emphasizes the impact that sleep products — like bedding — can have on the quality of our sleep hygiene. “Small changes in sleep hygiene can lead to massive improvements in energy, mood, and hormone function,” she states. Organic cooling sheets are her bedding pick of choice as “cooler sleep helps you fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and get deeper rest”. If you’ve been experiencing sweaty and uncomfortable sleep night after night, it might be time to consider upgrading to nontoxic, organic bedding.

Why choose organic bedding?

Comfort is the first consideration when shopping for organic bedding. “Organic fibers are breathable, come in a variety of weights and weaves, and can be temperature regulating,” says Whitney Thornburg, design director of Coyuchi, an organic bedding brand, “all of which can help you create a personal, customizable bed for a great night’s sleep.” Thornburg recommends staying away from synthetic fabrics because of their reduced breathability.

Not only does organic bedding make for better, more comfortable sleep, but it’s also essential for avoiding exposure to dangerous chemicals. Manufacturing processes emit VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, chemicals that diffuse into the air and can be toxic to human health. Synthetic fabrics like polyester and microfiber are derived from petroleum, and their manufacturing process is a nasty business (literally). Production of these synthetic materials can also make factory workers ill from toxic chemicals. You’ll want to consider healthier bedding to benefit your health and those involved in creating the bedding, too.

Finally, organic fabrics tend to use less water and energy in their production. And with fabrics like organic cotton and linen, you can be sure that damaging chemicals like pesticides don’t seep into the earth or your bedtime routine.

What should you look for when shopping?

Keep an eye out for third-party certifications. Thornburg likes GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), which ensures that at least 95% of a product’s materials are certified organic, since “it also checks EVERY step of the supply chain to ensure these standards are followed, from fiber to spinner to dyer to weaver.” (The GOTS 7.0 certification also includes materials that contain no PFAS).

Other certifications to look for include Oeko-Tex Standard 100 which means a textile is free of 100 commonly used toxic substances and allergens (the finished product only, though, not the whole supply chain). A GreenGuard certification ensures a product won’t emit VOCs at a harmful level, Fair Trade Certified means factories have safe working conditions, and Made Safe ensures a product is free of 6,500 banned or potentially hazardous substances.

We’ve compiled a full list of the third-party certifications that we keep an eye on when we’re shopping sustainable and nontoxic bedding brands. And for each brand below, we’ve noted which certifications they carry in their write-up. It’s also helpful to note that the brands that are certified by a third party are also more likely to use safer, more ethical processes throughout manufacturing and selling.

What is our review process?

Each brand on this list has been individually reviewed by one of our editors. Unlike other review sites, we bring these sheets, duvets, pillows, and more into our homes and sleep on them for months (sometimes years!) to see how they hold up and feel over time. Our top considerations are health and safety, comfort, environmental impact, durability, and long-term value. In addition to hands-on testing, we tour factories, investigate certifications, interview brands, scour online reviews, and survey our own readers for your preferences. We’ve got your back when it comes to finding the best organic bedding for your home.

Our criteria:

Our Editor’s Review of Sijo

Overall, I’ve got a big bedding crush on Sijo. The prices are more accessible than many other sustainable bedding brands, and the products are well-constructed and luxurious to the touch. I do see that there are a few items made using synthetic materials like polyester and nylon, which is the only drawback I’ve found so far. Just check the materials twice before ordering if you have a sensitivity to these types of fabrics!

Our editors’ main criteria when shopping for organic bedding 🔎

What are the relevant certifications?

Third-party certified bedding brands add an extra layer of credibility when it comes to the safety of your new bedding products. These certifications can also indicate what sustainable and ethical processes are being followed throughout the production process. Below is a full list of certifications that we look for when it comes to sustainable and nontoxic bedding brands.

  • 1% for the Planet: Brands that are members of 1% for the Planet donate 1% of annual sales to environmental causes, which is a bonus when we’re looking for sustainable bedding options.
  • GOTS Certified: The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the gold standard for organic cotton and other textile components. Textile products must be made from 95% certified organic raw materials to become GOTS Certified. GOTS also requires stringent worker protections that ban exposure to toxic chemicals and child or forced labor. GOTS’ rigorous certification process requires their environmental and social criteria are met throughout the entire textile supply chain.
  • MADE SAFE: MADE SAFE is a nontoxic certification for everyday products, including bedding. This certification is extremely stringent, and every product is heavily screened to validate that over 6,500 substances on the banned and restricted list have been avoided or constrained.
  • GREENGUARD Certified: A GREENGUARD Certification means that your bedding meets some of the world’s most comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into indoor air.
  • OEKO-TEX Certified: OEKO-TEX is a consistent, independent testing and certification system that ensures every component in a bedding product is free from harmful substances (from raw materials to the final product).
  • B Corporation: B Corporations meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. To become a B Corp, organizations must be verified through B Lab, a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring a fair and sustainable global economy.
  • Climate Neutral Certified: Climate Neutral Certified brands measure and offset their entire carbon footprint and implement plans to reduce future emissions. While some companies claim to be carbon-negative by removing more carbon than they emit, it’s important to note that it is not an official certification.
  • Fair Trade Certification: One of the most meticulous social standards, the Fair Trade certification means that the bedding materials are sourced ethically and workers are paid fair wages.
  • PETA-Approved Vegan: The PETA-Approved Vegan certification assures shoppers that no animal products were used in the manufacturing process (such as wool). Many organizations offer other vegan certifications, too, like the Vegan Action certification. It’s best to review that the entire product is vegan and not just a handful of the components.

What are the best natural fabrics?

  • Organic Cotton: Grown with no toxic pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, or genetically modified seeds. Tends to use less water than conventional cotton.
  • Organic Linen: Made of fast-growing flax, organic linen uses no synthetic fertilizer or pesticides, requires little water, and produces little waste.
  • Organic Hemp: Similar to linen, organic hemp uses little water and no synthetic fertilizer or pesticides, and is nice and durable.
  • Wool: Biodegradable, durable, and renewable, wool is a great temperature regulator, too.
  • Eucalyptus: Faster-growing eucalyptus trees are used to make Tencel, a semi-synthetic fabric that produces little waste and is still biodegradable.
  • Bamboo: Bamboo is a fast-growing, regenerative crop that requires little or no fertilizer or pesticides.

For more information on sustainable fabrics, check out our fabrics guide.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

I slept on dozens of organic and nontoxic comforters and duvet inserts — these are my favorites for your health, comfort, ease of care, and long-lasting durability.

Not all bedding is created equal. Some duvets are made with conventionally grown cotton which uses pesticides and fertilizers, while other comforters are polyester, which accumulates more dust mites than down. That’s why we like to opt for bedding made of organic, natural materials — namely, organic cotton, down, and wool. It’s like a gentle hug from nature, minus the toxic drama!

But being made from naturally derived materials doesn’t mean a comforter wasn’t treated with chemicals during manufacturing. It can be exhausting to track and trace all of the possible loopholes where a brand might greenwash or hide important information about how it makes its products. How can you tell which duvets and comforters are good for you and for the planet? Which brands can you trust? For this guide, our editorial team selected their favorite organic and clean bedding options, and I personally slept on each of them to give you the deets.

What is organic bedding?

Organic bedding refers to sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, and other sleep textiles made from materials grown and processed without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or harmful chemicals. Typically crafted from certified organic cotton, bamboo, hemp, or wool, organic bedding supports both environmental sustainability and personal health, by reducing your risk of sleeping on potentially irritating allergens or chemicals like PFAS, formaldehyde, and heavy metals.

During production, organic bedding is processed without harsh dyes, chlorine bleach, or chemical finishes, making it gentler on sensitive skin and less likely to off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Reputable organic bedding products are also certified by third-party organizations like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) or OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which ensure compliance with stringent environmental and social standards (more on that below!). These certifications also verify that workers involved in the supply chain are treated fairly.

Beyond health and sustainability benefits, organic bedding is breathable, durable, and luxuriously soft, which is why i’ve made it my mission to find out which organic bedding brands make the best comforters and duvet inserts!

Why shop for an organic comforter or duvet?

Shopping for an organic comforter or duvet is a great way to upgrade your sleep setup with natural materials that are both good for you and the planet. Natural materials take less energy to produce and leave less pollution in their wake, so you’re not breathing in toxins or sleeping next to irritating residues all night.

On the other hand, bedding made with polyester, the most common synthetic material, produces tons of wastewater, for one, and releases microplastics each time it’s washed, for two. Plus, synthetic fabrics harm humans along with the environment — folks who work in textile factories, specifically. They’re at higher risk for health complications like respiratory issues, cancer, and more. But since polyester is still a super common and convenient fabric, we recommend opting for recycled whenever possible. For more info on sustainable fabrics, check out our handy fabrics guide.

In addition to higher health risks, conventional bedding and mattresses are often exposed to VOCs during the manufacturing process — a commonly used class of harmful chemicals, giving bedding that weird chemical smell when you first open it. VOCs have been linked to headaches, sinus issues, and hormone disruption over time — especially concerning in a space where you’re supposed to rest and recover.

The harsh reality surrounding bedding products makes it especially important to seek out natural bedding (especially if you’re on the sensitive side). Plus, organic materials like wool naturally regulate temperature and moisture, helping you sleep more comfortably all year long. So when you choose an organic duvet, you’re not just getting a cozy, breathable blanket — you’re making a conscious decision that benefits your well-being and the world around you!

What should you look for when shopping for an organic comforter or duvet?

Ok, so now we know the why when it comes to organic comforters and duvets. But how do we know which products aren’t actually filled with potentially harmful substances? In short, third-party sustainability certifications. These are important because they give us confidence that a product truly lives up to its eco-friendly or ethical claims — without having to just take a brand’s word for it. In a world where “greenwashing” is pretty common, certifications from trusted organizations act as proof that strict environmental, health, and labor standards were met throughout the entire supply chain. These certifications require detailed audits and traceability, which holds brands accountable and encourages real transparency. The most helpful ones are:

  • GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): A GOTS certification means that at least 95% of a product’s materials — like the cotton or wool in your comforter or duvet — are certified organic. It also ensures that the entire production process, from harvesting to weaving and finishing, follows strict environmental and social standards, including non-toxic dyes and fair labor practices. For bedding, this guarantees you’re sleeping under materials that are both safe for your skin and responsibly made from start to finish.
  • OEKO-TEX® Standard 100: This certification ensures that every component of a comforter or duvet — from the outer fabric to the stitching and even the zippers—is tested for harmful substances and proven free from over 100 toxic chemicals. While it doesn’t mean the product is organic, it does confirm that it’s been independently verified as safe for human use, including for babies and those with sensitive skin. It’s a great marker of chemical safety, especially when paired with other eco-certifications.
  • UL GREENGUARD Certification: A comforter or duvet with GREENGUARD Certification has been tested for emissions and found to meet strict limits for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can pollute indoor air and irritate the lungs, skin, or eyes. This is especially important for bedding, since we spend so much time in close contact with it while sleeping. GREENGUARD ensures your bedding won’t compromise the air quality in your home.
  • Fair Trade Certified: When a comforter or duvet is Fair Trade Certified, it means the workers who made it — whether in the cotton fields or in the sewing factory—were paid fairly and worked in safe, healthy conditions. It also helps fund community development projects in those regions, like access to healthcare or education. Choosing Fair Trade bedding supports human rights and ethical labor throughout the supply chain.
  • Responsible Down Standard (RDS): If a comforter is filled with down and carries the RDS label, it means the down was sourced from birds that were treated humanely, with no live-plucking or force-feeding allowed. The certification follows the entire supply chain, from farm to final product, to ensure transparency and accountability. It’s a must-have if you want the warmth and loft of down without compromising on animal welfare.

Our methodology and criteria:

Our team has rigorously researched and tested dozens of the top organic and natural comforters and duvets on the market — some products have even been on our beds for over five years! 🛏️ For this guide, I slept on our editors’ top picks for multiple nights and made notes on my experience.

While I generally run on the colder side, my husband emits the sort of heat that could easily bake cookies, which attracts our heat-loving senior cat, who anchors himself in the dead-center of the bed for at least half the night. So temperature regulation was a big part of my experience!

I slept with these ten clean comforters from sustainable brands and made notes on comfort, feel, temperature-regulation, and durability.

We update this list regularly with our emerging favorites that meet the following criteria:

  • ORGANIC & CLEAN | Each brand’s blankets are made of organic natural or recycled materials like cotton, wool, down, or Tencel, and also host third-party certifications to guarantee consumer safety.
  • COMFORTABLE | After testing, we’ve found these brands to have the most comfortable duvets and comforters. They’re good at cooling and moisture-wicking, and you’ll find various weights on this list.
  • DURABLE | Again, first-hand testing tells us all we need to know, including that each product is durable enough to stand the test of time.
  • SUSTAINABLE | All brands included have commitments to care for the environment and give-back initiatives as well as safe labor practices.

The ten organic comforters and inserts below will have you and your family sleeping safe and sound. Many of the brands also offer payment plans to support your budget!

Nest Bedding’s Silk Cloud Comforter was totally intriguing to me from the start: If I was going to find the special unicorn that was a cloud-like marshmallow comforter that wouldn’t set my husband on fire in the middle of the night, then the famously heat-resistant material of silk was going to be my best bet! And reader, this product delivered. While not exactly fluffy, it has a nice, squishy quality that you just can’t get from a quilt or top sheet only. But most importantly, it stayed cool all. Night. Long. In fact, it felt almost weightless on top of me! The brand says that the comforter will get lightly warm in the winter, but I actually think I’ll need to add a blanket on top. All of Nest’s organic comforters are free of carcinogenic chemicals, VOCs, or allergens, which means they are great for your space, skin, and home.

We were especially excited to try the Signature Comforter Set from Boll & Branch, since we’ve been loving our sheets for the past year from my review. We both knew we could expect the luxury-hotel quality feel from the comforter, but what surprised me was that my husband chose this one as his hands-down, non-quilt favorite. The 100% organic cotton Signature fabric shell stays cool for a surprisingly long time, and the hypoallergenic, recycled polyester batting is much more breathable than I expected. Boll & Branch works directly with farmers to source the best sustainable cotton and build a transparent supply chain so you know exactly where your bedding is coming from. You can also top off your bed with its beautiful line of bed blankets!

With a relaxed drape, diamond-shaped stitch, and lightly crinkled look on a beautiful undyed hue, the Climate Benefical Cotton Duvet Insert from Coyuchi is pretty enough to serve as standalone bedding. This medium-weight comforter is a great vegan alternative to down, and the perfect all-natural alternative to synthetic fill. The batting is hand-tufted in a family-owned workshop in the United States. If I was sleeping alone, this would be my number one, no contest. It’s luxurious while still somehow feeling like my favorite t-shirt. But it is warm. Breathable, but not for a late summer night. They arrive slightly oversized and shrink a bit in the wash (again, like a t-shirt!) and every purchase supports California farms.

Millions of people adore Avocado’s mattresses and sheets, so it’s no surprise their Alpaca Duvet Insert is another winner. Made not to bunch inside a cover (score!), this organic duvet is designed to be thermoregulating, breathable, and ultra-luxurious. Choose from the lightweight or an all-season option for more warmth (you can see the lightweight here in our photos!). This comforter was warm, soft, and felt like the sort of thing you’d want to wrap up in by the fire in the middle of a dark and cozy winter evening. But maybe you run cooler than me, and the heavier weight would be a better fit! With Avocado’s 100-night trial and yearlong warranty, you’ll have plenty of time to decide which duvet insert is right for you.

Price Range | $319 (Twin) – $599 (King/California King)

Naturepedic’s Alpaca Wool Duvet Insert Comforter is a supremely cozy, natural comforter that feels fluffy as down without the feathers. Stuffed instead with ethically sourced alpaca wool from the Andes Mountains, the shell is OCS certified organic cotton, and extremely soft to the touch. That was our main takeaway from this one: Just how soft it is, both on the surface and in general squishiness, without being remotely bulky. It warms up slowly and though we did need to take it off in the night, it wasn’t sweltering at any point. Though the brand recommends that you avoid laundering, they do include gentle home-washing guidance that will preserve the integrity of the wool and prevent it from shrinking while it dries. If you’re looking for a hypoallergenic, natural, all-season comforter that adds a little extra fluff and warmth, this one might be your perfect match.

Price Range | $195 (Twin/Twin XL) – $275 (King/California King)

SIJOs Eucalyptus Comforter is cooling, moderately fluffy, and silky soft. What more could we ask for? Made from 100 percent TENCEL™ lyocell fibers (a blend of sustainably farmed eucalyptus and other wood sources), the lightweight bedding is perfect for warm sleepers and hot weather. It’s hypoallergenic, antimicrobial, and — thanks to its corner ties and snaps — can easily be inserted into a duvet cover, too. This one is more like an Oreo Thin than a regular or doublestuff on the fluffy scale, and almost looks like a set of sheets when folded. It is exceptionally cooling, however, and got two enthusiastic thumbs up from my hot potato husband. Give these a go for up to 30 nights! You can read our full SIJO review here.

Price Range | $102 (Twin/Twin XL) – $275 (King/California King)

Featuring a classic quilted look, Pact’s Organic Cotton Diamond Quilt comes in beautiful, neutral shades and is as cozy as it is conscious. Made in a Fair Trade Certified factory from 100 percent organic cotton, these quilt blankets are soft to the touch (thanks to the sateen weaving pattern), toxin-free, and machine-washable. Plus, the medium weight means they can easily transition from cooler seasons to warmer ones and back. Since we were testing these during the awkward stop-start seasonal transition of late summer to early fall, we ended up reaching for this one multiple times, particularly when the evenings were just cooling down enough to leave the windows open. The only downside to this one is that the gauzy material (which I LOVE), invites many biscuit-making sessions from our senior cat; the delicate fabric unfortunately shows every snag. The quilt I tried is currently being phased out, so you can check out more of Pact’s cozy quilts here!

9. Quince

Brand Ethics | Handcrafted by artisans, transparent pricing, responsible & sustainable factories
Types Available | Twin, Full/Queen, King/Cal King
Price Range | $99 (Twin) – $120 (King/California King)

If you’re more into quilts than comforters, we’ve got an option for you! Quince’s 100% Organic Cotton Quilt is made with, well, organic cotton! (They also make quilts in linen, bamboo, and even silk, and come in dozens of options!) Whether you’re into soft and airy gauze quilts or glamorous velvet quilts, most are OEKO-TEX certified for a healthy and toxin-free snooze. This one was the instant winner for my space-heater spouse. It’s the perfect layering blanket for me and the ideal top cover for him: It’s airy and breathable, so it stays cool all night, even if you’re cooking up body heat sleeping with a senior cat on your chest.

10. Brooklinen

American made
Cruelty free
Family owned

Made in Canada
Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified

Best For | Ethical down comforter
Organic Materials | Hypoallergenic DOWNMARK® Certified down fill, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified
Brand Ethics | Cruelty-free
Types Available | Twin, Full/Queen, King/Cal King
Price Range | $199 (Twin/Twin XL) – $599 (King/California King)
Machine Washable | Spot clean recommended; dry clean if needed

The Brooklinen All-Season Down Comforter is the ethical answer to anyone looking to transform their bed into a cloud-like dream. 100% Hutterite down clusters sustainably sourced from a Canadian farm are evenly distributed in the super soft cotton shell. This is the mid-weight option, but they also create a down comforter in Lightweight and Ultra-Warm. It’s pretty warm (that’s down’s thing!), so in my opinion this is bedding for winter or high-AC situations. While this comforter isn’t organic, it is OEKO-TEX certified for chemical safety, made in Canada, and has the seal of approval from Good Housekeeping for quality.

Our editors’ top considerations when shopping for organic comforters and duvets 🔎

Materials

When shopping for organic comforters and duvets, we like to start with materials — because what goes into your bedding matters just as much as how it feels. We prioritize comforters made from certified organic materials such as GOTS-certified cotton, organic wool, or natural bamboo. These materials are grown and made without synthetic pesticides, toxic dyes, or chemical finishes, making them gentler on your skin and safer for your sleep environment. Organic cotton is breathable and soft (ideal for all seasons!), while organic wool naturally regulates temperature and wicks moisture, making it perfect for year-round comfort. Both of these natural materials can even improve your sleep quality! When it comes to the fill inside, we like to make sure it’s equally clean — avoiding synthetic polyester and looking for organic or responsibly sourced natural fills that won’t off-gas harmful VOCs.

We also weigh the ethical and environmental impact of fill materials. Down — while lightweight, lofty, and incredibly insulating — can raise concerns around animal welfare, especially if it’s not certified by standards like the Responsible Down Standard (RDS), which ensures birds are not live-plucked or force-fed. Wool is a sustainable, naturally flame-resistant, and moisture-wicking fiber, but it’s essential to look for cruelty-free or regenerative wool certifications that prioritize animal welfare and land stewardship. Plant-based fills like organic cotton or bamboo are hypoallergenic and sustainable but may not offer the same warmth-to-weight ratio as down or wool (as noted in this study on sleepwear and bedding fibers). On the other hand, synthetic fibers like polyester can be warm and affordable, but they’re typically derived from petroleum, non-biodegradable, and may release microplastics and VOCs into the environment over time. Choosing the right fill means balancing comfort, ethics, and environmental impact.

Key takeaways:

  • Avoid synthetic fills when possible due to microplastics and VOC emissions
  • Look for GOTS-certified organic materials like cotton, wool, or bamboo
  • Down is warm and lightweight but should be RDS-certified for ethical sourcing
  • Wool is breathable and sustainable—seek cruelty-free or regenerative wool
  • Plant-based fills are hypoallergenic but may be less insulating

Flammability & Washability

When evaluating comforters and duvet inserts, one of the most important — yet often overlooked — factors we consider is flammability. Many conventional bedding products, especially those made with synthetic fabrics or polyester fills, are treated with chemical flame retardants to meet federal safety regulations. While these additives may help prevent combustion, they can come at a serious cost to our health and the environment. Over time, these chemicals can off-gas and accumulate in household dust, contributing to indoor air pollution and increasing the risk of respiratory irritation, hormone disruption, and other long-term health concerns. This is especially problematic for vulnerable groups such as children, people with asthma, and those with chemical sensitivities.

In contrast, organic and naturally derived materials often meet flammability standards without the need for toxic chemical treatments. Wool, for example, is a fiber that’s inherently flame-resistant due to its high nitrogen and water content. It chars rather than melts or ignites, making it a safe and natural choice for comforter fill or outer fabric. Some organic bedding brands also design their products with tighter weaves or use additional, non-toxic physical barriers to comply with flammability regulations — without compromising on health or comfort.

We also pay close attention to washability and care instructions, which are key to maintaining the longevity and cleanliness of your bedding. Some organic comforters are machine washable and easy to care for, making them ideal for families, pet owners, or anyone who values convenience. Others may be more delicate, requiring spot cleaning or eco-friendly dry cleaning to preserve their natural materials and structure. Because care requirements can vary significantly based on fill type, outer fabric, and construction, we always recommend reading labels carefully before purchasing.

Key takeaways:

  • Always review care instructions — some organic comforters are washable, while others require special handling
  • Chemical flame retardants are common in conventional bedding but may release harmful toxins
  • Naturally flame-resistant materials like wool are safer and meet flammability standards without harsh chemicals

Sizing Considerations

When shopping for an organic comforter or duvet, getting the right size is more important than it might seem. While most brands offer standard sizes — twin, full/queen, and king — actual dimensions can vary by manufacturer, sometimes by several inches. This can affect how well the bedding drapes over your mattress, how it fits inside a duvet cover, and whether it gives you that cozy, hotel-style overhang. For example, a queen-size duvet from one brand may measure 90″x90″, while another may be closer to 92″x96″. If you’re using a duvet cover, it’s always a good idea to check both the insert and cover measurements to avoid bunching or gaps.

Also, consider mattress depth — if you have a thick pillow-top or use a mattress topper, you may want to size up for better coverage. Some people also prefer to size up (like using a king on a queen bed) for added coziness or aesthetic reasons.

Key takeaways:

  • Standard bedding sizes vary by brand — always check exact dimensions
  • Make sure your duvet insert and cover are compatible in size
  • Consider mattress depth and personal preference for drape and coverage
  • Sizing up can offer a more luxurious, oversized look

Comforter vs. duvet insert: What’s the difference?

Although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, comforters and duvet inserts are not the same — and knowing the difference can help you shop smarter. A comforter is a quilted, stand-alone blanket filled with insulating material (like down, wool, or cotton) and usually finished with a decorative outer fabric. It’s designed to be used on its own without a cover, which makes it simpler if you prefer a low-maintenance bedding option. However, washing an entire comforter can be bulky and challenging, especially with larger sizes.

A duvet insert, on the other hand, is a plain, fluffy blanket that’s meant to be placed inside a removable duvet cover. This system offers more versatility, allowing you to easily change styles, patterns, or colors without replacing the whole insert. Duvet covers are also easier to wash than full comforters, making them a great choice for those who like to keep bedding extra fresh or switch up their room’s aesthetic with the seasons. Some people find duvet covers fussy to manage — especially if they shift inside the cover — but corner ties and button closures help reduce this issue.

Key takeaways:

  • Look for duvet inserts with corner loops and covers with ties for a secure fit
  • Comforter = quilted, decorative blanket used on its own
  • Duvet insert = plain insert used inside a removable cover
  • Duvet covers are easier to clean and swap out seasonally
  • Comforters are more grab-and-go but harder to launder regularly

We’ve researched dozens of the best supportive and nontoxic lumbar pillows — these are our top selections with the best reviews.

If you suffer from lower back pain or a slouching posture, lumbar pillows may be just what the doctor ordered. (Or, in this case, a physical therapist? We’ll workshop it.) These pillows are ergonomically designed with a curved shape to sit along your body, especially in sitting or laying positions.

A lumbar pillow specifically supports your back, taking pressure off the spine, keeping back muscles relaxed, and forcing you to sit up straighter. Outside of your physical comfort, lumbar pillows can also help with indigestion or digestive issues, too, thanks to the boost in height.

How do you know if you need better back support?

If you frequently experience back pain or feel uncomfortable while seated or laying down, it could be a sign that your back isn’t supported enough while doing these activities. Poor posture, feeling fatigue or stiffness in your back muscles, and poor circulation (often characterized by numbness or a tingly feeling in your back) can also be symptoms of a poorly supported back.

Fortunately, ergonomic furniture and accessories — like lumbar pillows — can help provide some relief and improve pain and discomfort in your back. We’ve listed our favorite lumbar pillows below, available at a range of price points!

Our criteria:

  • SUPPORTIVE | These lumbar pillows are especially designed to help support your back adequately and help you rest more comfortably.
  • NONTOXIC MATERIALS | Each of these lumbar pillows uses sustainably sourced and nontoxic materials, like organic cotton and OEKO-TEX certified fabrics.
  • EXCELLENT REVIEWS | We’ve scoured thousands of reviews and have listed the top lumbar pillow brands that have the best reviews.

While many pillows are made with polyurethane or questionable down feathers, we’ve found a number of brands below crafting organic and sustainable lumbar pillows. So you could say they’ve got the environment’s back…and your own. Sustainable support you can count on.

For more comfy, supportive upgrades around the home, check out these organic pillows, sustainable bedding brands, and nontoxic mattresses

The 10 Best Organic Twin Mattresses For Kids (2026) https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/organic-twin-mattress/ https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/organic-twin-mattress/#comments Thu, 08 Jan 2026 16:52:38 +0000 These nontoxic twin mattresses are made from natural and organic materials and are eco-friendly, too.

The post The 10 Best Organic Twin Mattresses For Kids (2026) appeared first on The Good Trade.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

Our editors and their families have slept the best organic, non-toxic, and eco-friendly mattresses for a decade — these are our favorite options for an organic twin mattress.

Buying a mattress is an important investment, especially when shopping for the one your kids are sleeping on. Dr. Nora Fahdan a pediatrician in California emphasizes the importance of sleep in a child’s development: “Sleep is so important for their physical health, their brain development, and their ability to regulate their emotions.” Quality sleep in children starts with a mattress that supports healthy growth, proper posture, and overall well-being.

We know that choosing a mattress that fits your home, budget, and values can be an extensive process — so we’ve created this guide to help you narrow down the most eco-friendly, sustainably made, and non-toxic options. Whether you’re shopping for your kids, in need of a smaller mattress for yourself, or building out a guest room, these brands have safe and comfy options for more restorative sleep.

Why are organic and nontoxic mattresses important, especially for kids?

Organic and nontoxic mattresses are essential for kids because they provide a healthier sleep environment and are free from harmful chemicals like flame retardants and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in traditional mattresses. These chemicals can off-gas and pose health risks, especially to children, whose developing bodies are more vulnerable.

“Sleep is so important for their physical health, their brain development, and their ability to regulate their emotions.”

– Dr. Nora Fahdan, pediatrician

Organic mattresses, made from natural materials like organic cotton and latex, are the better option as they offer better air quality, reducing the risk of allergies and respiratory issues, while helping contribute to better sleep quality for children. Natural materials like organic wool and latex are also highly breathable, helping to regulate temperature and wick away moisture, which keeps kids comfortable throughout the night. This can lead to deeper, more restorative sleep, which is crucial for their physical and cognitive development. They also provide comfort and support crucial for growing bodies while being environmentally friendly, thanks to the use of natural and organic materials.

By investing in an organic mattress, you’ll not only be prioritizing your child’s immediate health but also their long-term well-being and sleep quality.

What are the relevant certifications?

  • GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): This certification ensures that textiles are made from at least 95% organic fibers and processed without toxic chemicals. It also covers social criteria like fair wages and safe working conditions.
  • GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard): GOLS applies specifically to latex foam and guarantees that it is at least 95% organic and processed without harmful additives.
  • OEKO-TEX® Standard 100: This certification tests all components of the mattress for over 1,000 harmful substances, including heavy metals and pesticides, ensuring the mattress is safe for human health.
  • GREENGUARD Gold: GREENGUARD Gold indicates that a mattress has low chemical emissions, promoting healthy indoor air quality — especially important for children’s products.
  • MADE SAFE®: This certification confirms that the mattress is made without known toxic chemicals, including flame retardants and PFAS, making it safer for both people and the environment.

How to choose a twin mattress for your little one:

Choosing the right twin mattress for your child involves balancing comfort, support, and safety. First, consider firmness: Children generally need a medium-firm mattress that provides proper spinal support while still feeling comfortable, as overly soft mattresses can increase the risk of suffocation or poor posture. Materials are another key factor — look for organic or non-toxic options like GOTS-certified cotton, GOLS-certified latex, or mattresses free from flame retardants and harmful chemicals. Breathable, hypoallergenic fabrics can help regulate temperature and reduce allergens, which is especially important for kids with sensitivities. You’ll also want a mattress with durability to withstand years of jumping, playing, and growth, and one that is easy to clean or has a removable, washable cover.

Finally, certifications like GREENGUARD Gold, MADE SAFE®, or OEKO-TEX® can provide peace of mind that the mattress is safe for your child’s health and indoor air quality. By considering firmness, materials, and safety certifications, you can choose a twin mattress that supports healthy sleep and overall well-being for your little one!

Our criteria:

Our editors have personally slept on, researched, corresponded with brands, and read thousands of customer reviews to select the best organic, nontoxic, and supportive twin-sized mattresses for you and your family.

  • ORGANIC | The brands on this list boast certifications like GOLS to ensure they’re natural, organic materials like latex, wool, cotton, and/or down.
  • NONTOXIC | All of the options on this list are free of harsh flame retardants, and all are free from toxic chemicals.
  • SUPPORTIVE | These mattresses are supportive and durable — not only will they last, they’ll offer you more restorative sleep.

Looking for crib mattresses? We love these organic crib mattresses with non-toxic materials. Be sure to pair your child’s new mattress with these organic bedding options, too.
