The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

Our team of editors has spent the last twelve years testing the best non toxic mattresses across price points. These are our top selections in 2026.

We spend nearly a third of our lives sleeping — and there’s no better place to invest in our well-being! 😴

Over the last decade, our editorial team has reviewed dozens of organic and non toxic mattresses in our own homes and with our own families. In addition to hands-on testing, we regularly tour mattress factories in person, investigate proper certification and material use, interview the brands’ leadership teams, scour online reviews, and annually survey our audience for up-to-date consumer preferences.

Why choose an organic mattress?

Organic mattresses use certified organic materials, including natural wool, latex, and cotton. They avoid the risks of harmful substances that may harm immunity, hormone health, and the nervous system. “Repeated exposure to harmful chemicals in some traditional mattresses can impact your health, starting with how well you sleep. Some of these chemicals can contribute to symptoms including skin and respiratory irritation, hormone disruption, effects on your nervous system, and even impaired immune function,” emphasizes Dr. Jaclyn Tolentino. Having a safer sleep environment is especially important to vulnerable sleepers like young children, as 2025 research published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology shows.

Organic materials and production practices also ensure a more eco-friendly environmental impact. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the primary global body that governs a rigorous certification process for organic fibers, but we’ve outlined all the relevant organic certifications. While many companies may use words like “natural” and ”organic” as unfounded marketing terms, less than 2% of mattresses on the market actually receive organic certifications.

What Does “Non Toxic” Actually Mean?

You’ll often find brands touting the use of non toxic materials — but that doesn’t actually promise us anything. This is a form of greenwashing, which, as clean living expert Lindsay Dahl explains in her book Cleaning House, is a marketing tactic brands use to persuade customers that the product is safe for their homes.

“‘Nature-made’ or ‘non toxic’ or ‘clean’ doesn’t mean that any criteria were met for quality or safety,” writes Dahl. “It’s simply language that makes the customer think that the product is harmless and good for them.”

Instead, what’s most important is the certifications behind the claims, like GOTS, GOLS, and UL GREENGUARD Gold, and many more listed below, that are verified by third party testing and review. So, while “non toxic” isn’t inherently a bad word or descriptor, it’s not enough to guarantee that the mattress you buy is truly sustainable or organic.

What is our review process?

10 testers

90+ nights tested per mattress

3 sleep experts

6 factory tours

1,200 the good trade readers surveyed

Each mattress on this list has been individually reviewed by one of our editors. Unlike other review sites, we don’t order mattresses to a showroom; we actually bring these beds into our homes and sleep on them for months (or years!) to test long-term comfort and durability. Our top considerations are health and safety, comfort, environmental impact, durability, and long-term value. In addition to hands-on testing, we regularly tour mattress factories, investigate certifications, interview brands, scour online reviews, and survey our own readers for your preferences.

Rest assured, every non toxic mattress on this list has received rigorous certifications for safety and eco-friendly production and has been tested firsthand by one or more of our editors. This guide has also been medically reviewed by Dr. Jaclyn Tolentino, a board-certified family physician.

Our criteria:

  • ORGANIC CERTIFICATIONS | Every mattress on this list has received rigorous certifications for safe materials and eco-friendly production; each brand’s specific certifications are listed in the icon section above their feature. None of the mattresses on this list contain harsh flame retardants, and all are free from toxic chemicals, PFAS, VOCs, and fiberglass.
  • COMFORT | Comfort is key, so we try each mattress ourselves, spend hours scouring online reviews, and represent all the feedback from our readers that we collect through surveys, comments, and emails. The brands on this list are here because they are organic and people love to sleep on them.
  • AFFORDABLE | Every brand on this list sells directly to the consumer online and ships the mattress to your home, removing retail costs and reducing the final price. We’ve provided a range of options, from budget to luxury, without compromising safety.
  • ECO-FRIENDLY & GIVE BACK | All of the brands on this list employ eco-friendly production practices that help reduce water pollution, sequester carbon in the soil, and support biodiversity. Many of these companies also give back to their communities by donating high-quality organic mattresses to housing shelters and families in need.

Avocado stands out as one of the best organic mattresses thanks to its certified materials, comfort, and transparency — and it’s our editors’ top pick. It’s the kind of grown-up purchase that’s truly transformed our sleep, with noticeably better rest (and improved sleep scores) across our team.

Co-founders Alex and Jeff D’Andrea couldn’t find an affordable, safe, and truly non toxic mattress for their family — one free from petroleum-based polyurethane foams, toxic flame retardants, chemical adhesives, and off-gassing VOCs. In a marketplace filled with greenwashing and white-labeled beds, Avocado stands apart by owning its entire supply chain while meeting the most rigorous standards for health and sustainability. Each organic mattress is handmade in California using GOTS-certified organic cotton and wool from India, and GOLS-certified organic latex from India and Guatemala. Some premium models even include plush FSC-certified Pure Talalay latex. Every Avocado mattress is GREENGUARD Gold Certified for low emissions and built for a wide range of sleepers — from side to stomach to back.

The brand also offers a vegan-certified mattress, an organic cotton mattress protector, a waterproof mattress protector, and a wide range of sustainably made solid wood furniture. As a member of 1% for the Planet, Avocado gives back to environmental and social nonprofits, is a Certified B Corporation, and is Climate Neutral Certified. Our editors have personally reviewed the flagship mattress, the luxurious plush mattress, the budget-friendly Eco Organic mattress, and the popular Eco Organic Kids Mattress.

This year, our team of editors visited the Avocado mattress facility in Fullerton, CA, where we joined the co-CEO of Avocado Green Brands, Vy Nguyen, for a tour to see how these mattresses get made. We also saw a demo of hand needle-tufting, where long steel needles thread cotton straps through the mattress to secure the layers in place without glue. It’s a highly skilled, time-intensive process that keeps natural materials from shifting and improves durability.

Kayti Christian has long brown hair and bangs, wearing a black turtleneck and hoop earrings, smiles softly in front of a plain background.

Our Editor’s Review of Avocado

“Somewhere between entering my 30s and settling into the city I plan to call home for the foreseeable future, I realized I needed to stop buying Ikea mattresses off Craigslist. I ultimately decided on Avocado’s Pillow-Top mattress (featuring a Euro-style button-tufted pillow top) since my husband and I are both side sleepers. It’s an added expense but ultimately worth it, in my opinion, since you don’t need to add your own topper. I felt supported and snuggled in. […] Since receiving the Green Mattress, I’ve been getting better rest, and my sleep scores have reflected that. My chiropractor has noticed my spine health is looking great, too. My husband loves the mattress as well, and he’s a hard sell when it comes to mattresses and pillows!”

Birch’s non toxic and organic mattress may just be the coziest mattress ever. The NYC-based brand boasts OEKO-TEX and Rainforest Alliance certifications and, for every mattress sold, Birch plants one tree through the National Forest Foundation. This green mattress is made with organic, natural, hypoallergenic, and anti-microbial materials, including a natural cotton cover, hygroscopic wool (from New Zealand), and sustainably-tapped latex to keep even the warmest sleeper cool. For support, the individually wrapped steel coils (steel made in the USA) offer extra comfort and optimized pressure relief. We’ve personally tested this mattress and found it soft and springy, while still feeling supportive (see that it’s a medium firmness) and offering excellent edge support. We especially love the support of the Birch Luxe! With all its awards and natural mattress components, Birch makes it easy to sleep soundly and safely.

Our Editorial Director, Emily, visited the 3Z manufacturing facility in early 2024 and got to see firsthand how Birch mattresses are made from start to finish. John Merwin, the CEO of 3Z and founder of Brooklyn Bedding led the tour for a select group of editors, answering our questions and even letting us get hands-on experience sewing edge seams on tufted mattress covers. (Did you know they pour their foam and make all their springs in-house? It’s quite the production!)

Randi Donahue is a woman with brown hair in a pink top sits near a window, reflecting on her latest mattress review, as a plant thrives in the background.

Our Editor’s Review of Birch

“After months of sleeping on our Birch Luxe mattress, my husband and I are well-rested and clear on what we’ve missed out on all these years. We are delighted with this mattress; our 8 and 10-year-old daughters agree. […] My only issue was the edge of the mattress, in other words the full perimeter reinforcement, was flipped up, almost like a lip around the edge of the bed; I believe it was still from the way it was shipped because it has since relaxed a bit, or at least I’ve gotten used to it now. This mattress helps me sleep better, so much so that I’ve gone from avoiding bedtime to looking forward to it. Now, I just have a more challenging time getting up. In addition to deeper, better-quality sleep, I’ve also noticed my body feels refreshed and ache-free. I also went from a restless side sleeper to a comfy combo sleeper — spending a good part of the night on my back and sans any pillow between my knees.”

PlushBeds is a leading online luxury mattress manufacturer and retailer, specializing in organic mattresses and non toxic bedding. All products are handcrafted in their GOLS and GOTS-certified organic production facility in California, with free shipping within the contiguous USA. Our Editorial Director, Emily, visited the PlushBeds facility in Camarillo, California, where she learned about how much the brand’s quality ethos is inspired by the most legacy mattress makers in Europe — and how, at the end of the day, quality is the name of the game. The company offers a thorough selection of certified organic and eco-friendly mattresses at accessible prices, especially through key holidays, so keep an eye out for their promotions (although the brand also has luxury mattresses at top-tier price points — trust us, we’ve experienced them firsthand and the quality is unmatched). Each of the brand’s mattresses is GREENGUARD Gold Certified, ensuring your bed has met some of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low chemical emissions (plus, the brand never uses PFAS in its production). The company also provides environmental scholarships for college students, gives back to environmental and social nonprofits, and offsets 100% of its carbon emissions via TerraPass. For side sleepers like us, PlushBeds’ memory foam options are among the best non toxic mattresses. It doesn’t give us too much — or too little — firmness. Medium is just right!

Kate Arceo, a woman with long brown hair smiles while wearing a white top.

Our Editor’s Review of PlushBeds

“After our first night of sleep on our Signature Bliss mattress, I noticed it was the first morning in weeks that I’d woken up without any aches and pains. Sometimes I’m not aware I’m not sleeping well until I get one really good night of sleep — anyone else? That’s how this particular morning was. Noticing how deeply I’d slept made me realize how poorly I’d been sleeping leading up until that point. […] Another noteworthy anecdote: Since sleeping on our new mattress, I’ve noticed a significant reduction in motion transfer. With a husband who tosses and turns and two little children who occasionally end up in between us, more nights than not I can feel at least one family member or another shifting around in our bed […] since upgrading to our PlushBeds mattress, the motion transfer is at an all-time low.”

The Bear Hybrid is a GREENGUARD Gold Certified mattress designed for athletes and the most active people. A luxury mattress with coils and cooling foams, it boasts a Celliant Sleep Technology to promote better sleep and faster muscle recovery. Bear’s mattresses are GREENGUARD Gold and CertiPUR-US certified, ensuring low VOCs and beds that are free from toxic chemicals and harsh flame retardants. In our testing, we’ve found the Bear Original to be an excellent budget-friendly option for back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel. The Bear Natural offers a cozy pillowtop feel on a firm base, making it a good option for people who toss and turn, since there’s low motion transfer. While most Bear models don’t offer the same organic certifications as the top three selections on this list, we still recommend it for its safety certifications and accessible price point.

Emily McGowan has short, light pink and blonde hair, and smiles, wearing a dark green top and a necklace.

Our Editor’s Review of Bear

“I’ve always been an unfussy sleeper, but something has changed this year as I barrel toward my 35th birthday: I am now a hot sleeper. So while there was a bit of an adjustment period with the deep tufts on the Bear Elite, they provide airflow underneath me and help alleviate my night sweats — a worthwhile tradeoff if you ask me. The cushy top offers softness without sacrificing stability, and I’ve noticed that I stay asleep more consistently throughout the night, without the anxious wakeups. If you’re looking for a range of fully organic certifications, you might want to check elsewhere; however, Bear mattresses are GREENGUARD Gold Certified, and made with CertiPUR-US® certified foams. As someone who is currently prioritizing performance, this aligns with my values!”

Purchasing a non toxic mattress is an investment, and it can feel daunting. But Awara makes it easy to take the leap with a 365-night trial, premium customer service, and a forever warranty. Our editor took the plunge with an Awara (and in her dream size, the Cal King!), and she and her husband have slept like babies and never looked back.

We love Awara’s natural luxury hybrid mattress for its breathability and organic components, as well as the nine-inch contouring support core for pressure relief. It’s firm yet plush, and we feel confident that the mattress is supporting our bodies and promoting a healthy night’s sleep. Its ability to keep hot sleepers cool at night is outstanding (hello, fellow sweaty sleepers! 👋), the latex is breathable, and the coils boost airflow. The mattress arrives at your door in a cardboard box, and it’s as easy as rolling it out and using the fabric handles to place it on your bed frame for a supremely cool and comfortable night’s sleep.

Langa Chinyoka has long braided hair, wears a white T-shirt and stands in front of a bookshelf.

Our Editor’s Review of Awara

I like a firm mattress, so the Awara mattress was perfect for me. It had just enough give (admittedly, I did do a bounce test and it passed with flying colors) while retaining its shape. I’ve been a tosser and turner my whole life, but I slept like a stone on my Awara. From someone who has been called a restless sleeper by everyone I have shared a bed with, this was a monumental achievement. If you prefer an ultra-plush feel, you might find the Awara too firm, even after you’ve slept on it for weeks or months. But for hot sleepers, I can’t recommend the Awara mattress enough. Is this how everyone else has been living during hot summers? I can’t believe cool sleepers have been gatekeeping this from me my whole life.”

Ashley D'Arcy has long brown hair and a visible tattoo on their upper arm and is sitting indoors.

Our Editor’s Review of Brentwood Home

“Brentwood Home’s Oceano mattress is medium soft, rated a 4.5/10, but with reinforcement from springs and edge protection. […] I have fewer aches and pains, and I feel so much more comfortable throughout the night. It’s brought me back to a sense of comfort that I thought I left behind in childhood. One thing to note is that this mattress measures in at 14 inches tall, adding 3+ inches to our existing setup. We might have to rethink our current platform bed frame, but it’s more than worth it!”

Saatva is a leading disruptor in the mattress industry. From latex to memory foam, the company has an impressive collection to fit every person’s sleep needs and, by cutting out retail commissions, the company can sell to consumers at a fraction of the cost. Saatva’s disruptive model extends beyond distribution: its non toxic mattresses are made with plant-based, eco-friendly materials and crafted in the USA. The company also gives back by donating hundreds of natural mattresses to high-need organizations nationwide.

Several of our editors rave about the luxury innerspring mattress — it’s their forever pick. For a memory foam mattress comparable to iComfort and Tempur-Pedic (but at a fraction of the cost), we love Loom & Leaf, Saatva’s memory foam line. While memory foam is not an all-natural material, these mattresses are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning the foam is low in VOCs. For a latex option, Saatva’s Zenhaven Mattress is 100% all-natural Talalay latex, which is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to mold, microbes, and dust mites. The Talalay manufacturing process is entirely water-based, minimizing the amount of environmentally harmful byproducts.

Trinity Wilbourn has wavy hair, and is wearing a white top and necklaces, gazes upward thoughtfully.

Our Editor’s Review of Saatva

“Saatva’s Classic Mattress in Luxury Firm features a patented Lumbar Zone® Technology and responsive dual-coil design made of recycled carbon steel meaning it’s super supportive and will never sag. Nowadays, when I wake up in the morning, I am neither creaky nor cranky and my lower back pain is gone. I recommend this mattress if you suffer from back pain, are a side sleeper who prefers a firmer option, or you want to win at life! If you want a super squishy mattress, or something super firm, you’ll want to opt for a different firmness and perhaps a different mattress altogether.

Our Editor’s Review of Leesa

“After sleeping on it for a couple of weeks, our Leesa x West Elm Natural Hybrid Mattress feels even more comfortable and slightly contoured to our bodies. My husband and I have both been sleeping more soundly, and any of those minor neck or shoulder pains we’ve had have gone away (!). We credit this to the uniquely designed, individually encased springs. They adjust to the body during the night, so you’re supported in any position you find yourself in. I’ve found it makes a huge difference in how good I’m feeling in my body during the day. This mattress is considered medium-firm due to the supportive spring interior, but it feels more plush overall. If you’re looking for an extra firm mattress, this could be too soft.

Stephanie Fallon has long brown hair wearing a black top, and stands in front of a blue wall, adding charm to the serene setting.

Our Editor’s Review of My Green Mattress

“The Pure Eco mattress has just enough plushness on top to give that delicious, sinking-into-a-cloud feeling without being a bean bag that destroys your back. The feeling of this mattress is on par with memory foam, only it’s not made of the synthetic, chemical stuff. Instead, this mattress features a pocketed coil spring system that provides added lumbar and edge support designed for overall comfort for kids and adults up to 400 lbs. The 1 1/4″ layer of GOTS-certified organic and OEKO-TEX certified dunlop latex gives that sink-your-toes-in feeling while being eco-friendly and PFAS-free. After about an hour of too-excited-to-sleep zoomies, our daughter crashed into one of her deepest sleeps on her first night. She’s reported nothing but love for her bed every night since!”

Plus, all of their mattresses are formaldehyde-free and made without PFAS or chemical flame retardants while still maintaining flammability standards. (Psst — the brand’s crib mattresses are waterproof without the use of harmful chemicals, too!)

While Naturepedic mattresses do run on the more expensive side, you can count on the fact that you’re getting one of the best non toxic mattresses, made responsibly and sustainably in the USA, that will last you decades.

Our Editor’s Review of Naturepedic

“In my research, I found the hypoallergenic properties of latex mattresses are good for people who are sensitive to smells and have allergies (aka me). Since switching to Naturepedic, my sleep has been great (and my fiancé reported his sleep has improved too!). We both noticed the lack of motion transfer — feeling each other move in the middle of the night — and loved the luxury feel of it. And when I had a two-day migraine, it was fantastic to have a mattress that kept me cool and supported my head, neck, and back while I rested — especially because I feel extra sensitive to pressure, heat, and other stimuli during those times. Drawbacks include the high price tag and the fact that this mattress is quite heavy, so find some help for bringing it in, unboxing it, and setting it up!”

Our editors’ top considerations when shopping for an organic mattress:

There are now over 175 bed-in-a-box mattress brands to choose from 🤯. Selecting a new mattress is totally daunting! Especially since, as Dr. Matthew Walker, Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley writes, “[S]leep is the single most effective thing we can do to reset our brain and body health each day.” Mattress shopping is an incredibly personal decision — and a steep investment — so it’s important to find the perfect fit. (Of course, our favorite brands listed above offer sleep trials to make sure you’re completely satisfied, but it’s never fun having to coordinate the return of a mattress that didn’t work out for you.) Here’s a look at what factors you might consider depending on the type of sleep preferences you have!

As Dr. Michael Breus, clinical psychologist and sleep medicine expert, notes: “When putting together the ideal sleep environment, it’s not just about optimizing temperature, humidity, noise, and light. Having the right mattress, pillows, and bedding can also help you feel relaxed and ready for a good night’s rest.”

Start your search with a budget and mattress size in mind, which may help you narrow down the type of mattress within your price range before considering other factors. We’ve listed the types of mattresses below in order from least expensive to most expensive.

When do you know it’s time to get a new mattress?

Most mainstream mattresses will last 7–10 years in your home, but there are a few other indicators that might mean it’s time to get a new one. First, inspect your mattress for visible wear and tear — are there any points that sag, or new lumps that aren’t supposed to be there? Does the mattress squeak or creak when you roll over on it? Then, consider the quality of your sleep in the past few months. New aches and pains (especially in your shoulders, neck, and back), increased allergy sensitivities, or poor sleep quality in general might indicate that it’s time to get shopping. And, maybe, even make an upgrade to an organic mattress!

Which type of mattress should you choose?

  • Innerspring mattresses are ideal for people who prefer a more traditional mattress feel (think: a little bouncy), and for folks who tend to sleep hot thanks to the good airflow around the springs.
    • Pros: Often more affordable, supportive, and breathable
    • Cons: You might notice squeaking or creaking, there’s not much motion isolation (so you’ll feel it if your partner tosses and turns), and innerspring mattresses may wear out faster than other types
  • Memory Foam mattresses are excellent for side sleepers and people who deal with joint pain. The foam offers greater motion isolation than innersprings do, which means you won’t wake up if your bedmate moves or gets up a lot.
    • Pros: Contours to your body, offering motion isolation and pressure relief
    • Cons: Can retain heat (watch out, hot sleepers), and depending on the materials, you might experience off-gassing odors
  • Hybrid mattresses offer a balance of innerspring and foam mattresses. We think of them as the “Goldilocks beds” because they’re just right for a wide range of people. You’ll get support and comfort no matter how you sleep (especially if you sleep in multiple positions!).
    • Pros: A balance of support and comfort (not too firm or soft)
    • Cons: Can be heavy depending on the materials used, and more expensive because of the multiple components
  • Latex mattresses offer similar contouring and support to memory foam, making them a good choice for people sensitive to odors or with allergies. Latex is also naturally well-ventilated, making it a great choice for hot sleepers. And, of course, latex is a natural material, so you can feel better about the eco-impact of your mattress. You can find a complete list of all-latex mattresses here. Both Dunlop and Talalay latex are good options — because of their different production methods, Dunlop will be more dense and Talalay will tend to be lighter and bouncier. Dunlop latex can be made with all-natural materials, unlike Talalay, which needs synthetic additives, which means Dunlop latex is the only option that can receive an organic certification.
    • Pros: Hypoallergenic, responsive without being too bouncy (or making you feel like you’ve sunk into quicksand, like some memory foam), and has impressive durability for many years of use
    • Cons: All-natural latex mattresses can get very heavy if they’re not mixed with other materials and often carry the highest price tags

Which firmness should you look for?

  • Back Sleepers typically enjoy medium-firm to firm mattresses. For support and spinal alignment, look for memory foam, latex, and firmer hybrid mattresses.
  • Side Sleepers will typically sleep well on soft to medium mattresses. Look for softer memory foam and hybrid mattresses to relieve pressure on your shoulders and hips.
  • Stomach Sleepers will likely snooze best on firm mattresses. Look for firm innerspring and foam mattresses that reduce sinking so you can keep your spinal alignment.
  • What if you’re not sure? You can tell if a mattress is too soft for your needs if you feel stuck or unsupported, experience back pain or stiffness, or overheat due to sinking in too much. If a mattress is too firm, you’ll notice aching in your pressure points like hips, shoulders, and knees (or even numbness or tingling). You might also notice that you toss and turn when you’re trying to sleep, or that there’s a large gap under your lower back when you lay flat on the bed.

Other important considerations when choosing a mattress:

  • Are you a sweaty sleeper? Hot sleepers will like the breathability of latex, hybrid, and innerspring mattresses. If you do opt for foam, look for gel-infused or open-cell foam for extra airflow. If looking into hybrid mattresses, we recommend looking for ones with natural fabrics in the top layers — like organic cotton, wool, and natural latex.
  • For cold sleepers, beds that you sink into will cover a larger surface area of your body (so think soft!), and you’ll benefit from the heat retention qualities of memory foam and other foam mattresses.
  • If you snore, consider mattresses compatible with adjustable bed frames to elevate your head and improve airflow. Research has shown that even a 12-degree incline can be an unobtrusive way to reduce snoring and help you sleep through the night.
  • If you have allergies, consider hypoallergenic mattresses made from organic latex and bamboo viscose or rayon. These materials also help protect against dust mites!
  • Consider your preference between hand-tufting and other methods of layer bonding, such as glue. Some brands may use glues that won’t last as long as a quality tuft, or may contain toxic ingredients that you don’t want in your mattress.
  • Warranties typically cover factory defects but may not cover standard wear and tear. Check with your mattress maker before deciding to see if you’ll be covered down the line if the mattress wears in ways you don’t like!
  • If you tend to roll around a bit at night or want to maximize the usable surface of your mattress, look for models that offer a high level of edge support, which can help keep you on the bed. This is also handy if you have mobility issues and need extra firmness when getting out of bed in the morning.

What certifications ensure a mattress is organic or non toxic?

While there are a range of natural materials that offer non toxic sleep, we look for brands that carry additional certifications to ensure their mattresses are as safe as they claim to be. Here are the certifications we look for when evaluating organic (and sustainable) mattresses.

  • GOTS Certified: The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the gold standard for organic cotton, wool, and other textile components. Only textile products made from 95% certified organic raw materials can become GOTS Certified. There are also stringent worker protections that ban exposure to toxic chemicals and child or forced labor. Because GOTS’ rigorous certification requires environmental and social criteria across the entire textile supply chain, it is the gold standard for ensuring health and safety.
  • GOLS Certified: The Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) ensures that the latex in your mattress (and pillows) contains more than 95% of certified organic raw material. Similar to GOTS, GOLS also requires both environmental and social criteria throughout the entire textile supply chain.
  • MADE SAFE: MADE SAFE is a non toxic certification for everyday products, like mattresses, bedding, and skincare. This certification is extremely stringent, and every product is screened to validate that over 6,500 substances on the banned and restricted list have been avoided or constrained, eliminating the worst hazards commonly found in products used in our homes and daily routines.
  • GREENGUARD Certified: A GREENGUARD Certification means that your mattress meets some of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into indoor air. GREENGUARD Gold certification ensures the lowest emissions and off-gassing (making it especially good for folks who might be extra sensitive).
  • OEKO-TEX Certified: OEKO-TEX is a consistent, independent testing and certification system that ensures every component in a mattress is free from harmful substances (from raw materials to the final product).
  • CertiPUR-US: While CertiPUR-US doesn’t consider organic or natural materials, it does set a non toxic standard for the flexible polyurethane foam used in many hybrid and memory foam mattresses. This certification ensures that foams meet safety standards and are free of ozone-depleting substances, flame retardants, mercury, lead, formaldehyde, and phthalates, and have low VOC emissions.
  • B Corporation: B Corporations meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. Organizations must be verified through B Lab, a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring a fair and sustainable global economy to become a B Corp.
  • Climate Neutral Certified: Climate Neutral Certified brands measure and offset their entire carbon footprint and implement plans to reduce future emissions — we look for these when searching for more sustainable options. Some companies even claim to be carbon-negative by removing more carbon than they emit, although that is not an official certification.
  • Fair Trade Certification: One of the most rigorous social standards, the Fair Trade certification means that materials are sourced ethically and workers are paid fair wages.
  • USDA Certified Organic: The USDA Organic seal assures consumers that raw materials like cotton or wool are 95% or more organic. This seal does not cover any chemicals used in the production process, or the entire mattress like GOTS does.
  • eco-INSTITUT Certification: The eco-INSTITUT label is awarded to mattresses that have been tested for harmful substances, odors, and emissions in order to ensure healthier indoor air quality.
  • FSC Certified: The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) examines wood components like bed frames, as well as paper packaging materials. This certification ensures that these products come from responsibly managed forests.
  • PETA-Approved Vegan: The PETA-Approved Vegan certification assures shoppers that no animal products were used in the manufacturing process (such as wool, down, or leather). Many organizations offer other vegan certifications, too, like the Vegan Action certification. Just make sure that the entire mattress is vegan — not just a handful of the components.
  • 1% for the Planet: Members of 1% for the Planet donate 1% of annual sales to environmental causes, which is a bonus when we’re looking for sustainable bedding options.

What are common harmful substances found in traditional mattresses?

While you can find more affordable mattresses than the options on this list, it’s important to recognize that not all mattresses are created equal. Most conventional mattresses available online and in-store contain harmful substances that affect your home’s air quality and your health through chronic, long-term exposure. Here are a few to look out for:

  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are gases emitted from certain solids or liquids, including many synthetic materials used in mattresses. (They’re also common in paints!) VOCs have health impacts ranging from mild irritation and nausea to liver, kidney, and central nervous system damage. Some VOCs are even known carcinogens.
  • Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals used in some mattresses and furniture for their water and stain-resistant properties. Research on these “forever chemicals” by the CDC and the EPA has linked PFAS to liver damage, thyroid disease, decreased fertility, high cholesterol, obesity, hormone suppression, and cancer.
  • Chemical flame retardants, like brominated or halogenated flame retardants, are added to mattresses to ensure they meet fire safety standards. These flame retardants have been linked to health issues such as endocrine disruption, neurodevelopmental issues, and cancer, especially in vulnerable populations like infants or the elderly.
  • Fiberglass is used in some mattresses as an inexpensive flame retardant, but fiberglass fibers can be released into the air and environment if the mattress cover is removed or torn. Aside from short-term irritation, chronic inhalation of fiberglass can worsen respiratory conditions like asthma or bronchitis.
  • Polyurethane is a commonly used foam in mattresses, but it can release VOCs through off-gassing. (That new mattress smell? It might be the polyurethane!) This can cause respiratory irritation and headaches, and some research suggests potential endocrine disruption.

What is greenwashing?

Greenwashing is the practice of a company claiming to be more environmentally friendly—or non toxic—than it really is, often through misleading marketing language. This is particularly prevalent in the mattress industry, so our reviews focus only on brands that hold trusted third-party certifications like those listed above. Not every mattress will be perfect, but when it comes to such big investments in our daily routines and well-being, we want to know that the brands are accountable to outside sources for their claims about non toxic materials and sustainable production.

How to care for an organic mattress (and why they last longer!)

A mattress can be a steep investment — especially when you opt for an organic or natural one. But the perks of a well-crafted mattress include longevity: many of our favorite mattresses last 25+ years while maintaining quality and comfort. (And, compared to more “mainstream” brands that release more VOCs and can crumble as they age, you won’t get that funky smell or degradation with natural mattresses). That doesn’t mean you don’t have any upkeep; in order to keep your mattress cozy for the long haul, here’s how to best take care of it:

  • Always use a mattress protector to prevent spills from absorbing into the mattress (the number of times we’ve spilled coffee in bed has taught us this lesson firsthand).
  • Rotate and flip the mattress according to the manufacturer’s suggested timeline. Each timeline may differ, but the standard is to rotate once every three to six months.
  • Snuggle up with natural and organic bedding to get the most breathability out of your new mattress — it’s a game-changer!
  • Clean spills immediately (and use a mattress protector, as noted above) to keep your mattress dry and mold-free. If you live in a humid environment, consider getting a dehumidifier to reduce moisture retention.

How long will an organic mattress last?

Standard mattresses have a 7-10 year lifespan, but many organic options on our list feature lifespans of 25 years and longer! Some even offer lifetime warranties; that’s how deeply the brand stands behind their product. Review each brand’s recommendations for how frequently to replace your mattress, but know that generally, the higher the investment, the longer the mattress should last.

How does The Good Trade’s editorial team review mattresses?

The Good Trade’s editors are a diverse team of writers and sustainable product enthusiasts who offer trusted brand recommendations based on our hands-on testing and extensive research, including third-party verifications, certifications, and accreditations. We rigorously test the products featured in our guides so we can provide you with sincere recommendations that meet our standards for sustainability and health.

We’ve slept on mattresses from these brands for over ten years, and have recommended them to friends and family based on our own experience. I handed my credit card to the waiter as a delightful dinner with two of my close friends concluded. The meal was nothing particularly extravagant, but dining out is always more costly than cooking at home, and this was the third time within a week that I found myself paying a financial price for some quality friend time.

As I looked across the table at the bowed heads of my friends scribbling tips onto their receipts, I was momentarily transported back in time to seeing those same heads bowed over a group project in high school. We saw each other for hours nearly every day when we were classmates. Nothing was formal or curated. The friendships were birthed through repetitive days, months, and years together within the simultaneously mundane and thrilling framework of teenage life.

“I would never have imagined that some of my closest friendships would one day be confined to a small blue rectangle on my Google calendar every other month.”

Spending time with friends used to be as free as it was frequent. From sitting next to each other in class to making friends at poorly paying first jobs and internships, there was a daily opportunity for connection that I naively took for granted. I would never have imagined that some of my closest friendships would one day be confined to a small blue rectangle on my Google calendar every other month. As the years have gone by, our paychecks and offices have grown while our capacity for regular informal connection has shrunk.

I’m tremendously grateful for the privilege of having a budget for friend dates, but the cost of brunch, dinner, and drinks (let alone bigger trips or weekends away) add up quickly for all parties involved. This can present relational challenges when friends are inevitably in different life stages with varying income levels and responsibilities. Finances aside, after a few years of meeting up every so often to swap stories over entrèes, it can begin to feel as though our adult relationships orbit primarily around discussing old memories rather than making new ones.

“While there’s nothing wrong with conversation over tasty food (two of my favorite things in life), the context does have its limits.”

While there’s nothing wrong with conversation over tasty food (two of my favorite things in life), the context does have its limits. I think there’s a reason that first dates typically start in these settings, and then stronger romantic relationships slowly shift into simply living life and doing chores together. It’s not because we like the person any less — quite the contrary! It’s because the intimacy of sharing everyday life is the ultimate trusting relational environment.

Ironically, friendships often reverse this trajectory. We make new friends in casual everyday settings such as high school or college, the workplace or gym. Then, once that contextual container dissolves, we tend to revert to the “first few dates” behavior. We text to coordinate a time and place, meet up to chat, split the bill, and go home to our real lives.

While there’s seemingly no escape from the logistical scheduling required to maintain adult friendships, I’m finding that time with friends in situations requiring no funding can generate stronger bonds. When we invest our energy, instead of our dollars, into tasks or activities with companions, a sort of magic unfolds.

“When we invest our energy, instead of our dollars, into tasks or activities with companions, a sort of magic unfolds.”

Most of my favorite memories with adult friends are the ones in which our real lives intersected without any glamor: Helping a longtime bestie move into her first home, laughing alongside a girlfriend when my car broke down in the middle of a long drive-through vaccination line, realizing how little we knew about horticulture while volunteering together at a justice-centered local farm. Each of these situations alchemized from inconvenience or embarrassment into a cherished memory because of the friend who physically shared the moment with me. We created a new story together instead of simply swapping old ones.

The only way to create space for transforming the mundane into magic is to meet one another in the reality of everyday life. We make space for fresh perspectives when we bring others into our little world, and we learn more about theirs than we ever could by exchanging words or splitting tabs. In a digital era, this simple, tangible approach to friendship can feel challenging, but there are countless ways to integrate friends into your daily life.

Ways to actively spend time with friends at home:

  • Make a meal you’ve never tried before — bonus points for doing dishes together.
  • If you both work remotely, have a quiet “working date” in your living room and coordinate your break times for some literal or metaphorical tea.
  • Plan a two-part cleaning swap. For example, they come to help you wash your windows one week, and you go to their house to help organize their pantry the next week.
  • If there’s a holiday coming up, invite them over to make cards or wrap gifts with you.
  • Work in the garden together or lay outside and read.
  • Plan a free at-home spa day with a DIY facial steam and a YouTube yoga session.
  • Make a few freezer meals together to prepare for any upcoming busy seasons.
  • Clean out your closet — a friend can offer fresh perspectives on outfit combinations you wouldn’t have considered and help you decide what to say goodbye to.
  • Have a “mending party” together and prolong the life of your clothes.
  • Host a silly simple themed dinner that will cost next to nothing. (Our last one was quite literally just  “potato.” Everyone brought a different potato dish to our house and presented it before we ate, no fancy decor, just a chance for people to get creative and laugh about something as simple as the versatility of a root vegetable.)

Here are some ideas that weave into the fabric of daily life (and get you out of the house!):

  • Go on a hike or walk a local trail.
  • Volunteer together for a local cause you both care about.
  • Go grocery shopping for one or both of you.
  • Take your dog(s) to the dog park together.
  • Ask them to join in your errands and chat as you head to the dry cleaner, bank, etc.
  • Sign up for a 5k together (or create your own!).

Will I continue to go out on the town with friends? Absolutely. Even couples who spend every day living together benefit tremendously from treating themselves to a special date night. I’m just not relying on that as the foundational or primary activity for my friendships. The more I trust my friends with access to my real life, the more they trust me with theirs, and that is more satisfying than any fancy dinner out.

For my entire career, I’ve been building brands behind the scenes for female founders who were just a few paces ahead of me. Seeing their growth up close felt like a direct mirror for my own potential. They gave me that expansive feeling. If she can do it, so can I.

I’m a brand marketer who works at the intersection of storytelling, marketing, community-building, and helping founders find their voice. I’ve always been able to see other people’s magic — and translate it into a message, an offering, a brand that resonates with and finds the people who need to hear it.

“When would I have the courage to put myself out there, and share my own talents, ideas, and creativity with the world?”

But after a decade of telling other people’s stories — and watching their success expand because of it — I started to have this nagging feeling. If I can do this for others, why am I not doing it for myself? When would I have the courage to put myself out there and share my own talents, ideas, and creativity with the world?

Around my 30th birthday, these questions stopped being theoretical. I was frustrated and shrinking into the background of operations — telling myself that if I could just figure out what I wanted to build, say, or share, then I’d finally start. Once I knew what it was, putting myself out there would feel obvious. But the truth was: Waiting for clarity had become another way of hiding.

You might be familiar with the concept of a “Saturn return.” It’s that period of time in your late twenties when the universe taps you on the shoulder and says, gently but firmly: It’s time to stop living on potential and start taking responsibility for the life you actually want. Whether or not you believe in astrology, this maturation point between 28–31 usually illuminates everything you’ve been avoiding, and asks you to let go of any conditioning that’s not serving the authentic expression of your gifts… and this happens again between 57–60, when life asks you to evaluate if you’re happy with how things are unfolding mid-life.

In the throes of my questioning, I connected with a new friend. She was at a crossroads in her career — burned out on agency life and craving more freedom. Because I’d taken an alternative path as a career freelancer, my advice came from the very real way I’d navigated my own work: Helping her see her value as a creative, understand her marketable skills, and identify brands she could offer them to directly so she could make more money on her own terms.

I didn’t see this advice as anything special. I was just helping a friend by sharing a perspective that felt second nature to me. But when she implemented what I suggested — and saw immediate, tangible success — she reflected it back to me clearly: You have to teach other people how to do this.

“I was ready to put my energy somewhere — to finally build something of my own — so I followed the ping and started down the path.”

At first, I thought it was a boring idea. Teach people how to freelance? I was looking for something more exciting. But I was ready to put my energy somewhere — to finally build something of my own — so I followed the ping and started down the path of creating an e-course.

Excited by the process, I wrote lessons, recorded audio content, designed my brand, and came up with fun marketing ideas. I poured myself into the project for the next eight months, and just when I thought I was nearly ready to launch, it hit me. Now I needed to put myself out there if I really wanted to build this brand… and that felt really, really scary.

I stumbled across a video by an inspiring woman building a business around upskilling the corporate workforce. She shared her journey from zero to thousands of followers after committing to a daily value-forward social media experiment. I related to her background and was motivated by her story, but I remember lying in bed thinking, I would sooner die than put videos of myself on the internet.

And it wasn’t because I wasn’t outgoing or confident. It was because I was afraid of what other people would think of me.

Some of the worries and doubts that tried to hold me back included:

  • What if I’m cringey or seem like a try-hard?
  • What if nobody cares or engages at all?
  • What if I’m not actually good at this?
  • What if I run out of things to say?
  • What if I can’t follow through and fail in front of everyone?
  • What if I just don’t want people thinking about me at all?

But underneath all of those fears was a bigger, heavier question: What if I stayed silent and never shared at all? What would it cost me to keep my work — and myself — hidden?

And what might be possible if I were brave enough to try?

If any of this feels familiar, you’re not alone. Whether you’re an artist, writer, entrepreneur, leader, coach, professional — or simply someone with lived experience and ideas you want to share — the fear of being seen shows up for all of us. Especially when the work is personal. Especially when it matters.

Pushing through that fear isn’t just about confidence or self-expression. It’s about honoring what’s inside you. It’s about allowing your work to find the people it’s meant to serve. And it’s about opening yourself up to new opportunities, meaningful connections, and conversations that can only happen when you let yourself be visible.

“It’s about honoring what’s inside you. It’s about allowing your work to find the people it’s meant to serve.”

Since that moment of panic lying in bed, I’ve done the thing anyway. I launched. Over the last 12 months, I’ve shared hundreds of videos across social platforms, stayed consistent with my Substack, and started mentoring other founders, creatives, and leaders on how to put themselves out there in a way that actually feels aligned.

Being brave enough to share has led to clients, speaking engagements, brand partnerships, features, sales, new friends, and community. Best of all, I feel proud when I look at my growing body of work and know it’s offering real value to people.

So if you’re ready to step into the light and start sharing, here are the lessons that helped me.

Sharing your work is not showing off — it’s creating visibility

Sharing your work isn’t about showing off — or even about followers. It’s about creating visibility for yourself so you’re top of mind when opportunities arise, or when people need the services, skills, and perspective you can offer.

For a long time, I thought creating content and being visible meant making myself the center of attention. I even judged myself for wanting that. I’ve spoken to so many people who avoid sharing altogether because they don’t want to be self-aggrandizing, egotistical, or show-offy.

What I’ve learned is that visibility isn’t about drawing attention to yourself. It’s about letting your work circulate without trying to control how it’s received. Visibility isn’t vanity. It’s distribution.

“Visibility isn’t vanity. It’s distribution.”

You also get to control the tone of your output. If you’re not a show-offy person, you don’t suddenly become one by sharing your work. You can show up quietly, generously, and with the simple intention of letting the right people find what you’ve made.

When you share what you do, you’re not imposing — you’re offering

Here’s the simple part we often forget: If you don’t tell people what you’re doing, you can’t expect them to know. I had a friend who finally shared her freelance writing services and Substack on LinkedIn to her professional network after years of resistance — and in 24 hours, she got 2 new inbound clients and 75 subscribers… it could be that easy.

“If you don’t tell people what you’re doing, you can’t expect them to know.”

So many people have talents, services, creative projects, or businesses they hope will lead to clients, sales, or opportunities — but they haven’t even told their immediate circle what they’re working on. Meanwhile, people are looking for resources all the time. They’re trying to solve problems. They’re asking for recommendations.

When you share what you do, you’re not imposing — you’re offering. You’re giving people a chance to remember you when the moment is right. That’s not self-promotion. It’s a service. And when done thoughtfully, it’s a win-win.

You don’t have to have it all figured out — clarity unfolds over time

When you’re starting off, begin with a few simple intentions: share your work, provide value to others, and stay consistent — even if consistency, for now, means once a month.

As you put things out into the world, you’ll start to receive feedback on what you create – through messages, comments, and conversations. Pay more attention to the qualitative signals than the vanity metrics.

“When you let yourself start before you feel ready, your work begins to take shape in conversation with the world instead of in isolation.”

Try not to judge your work or over-strategize too early. Give yourself at least ten pieces (posts, articles, videos) before deciding what’s working. You’re still getting your bearings — learning what feels good to create, noticing who’s on the other side, and understanding what you want to build by paying attention to what energizes you.

When you let yourself start before you feel ready, your work begins to take shape in conversation with the world instead of in isolation.

What I’ve learned is that clarity is a byproduct of movement, not a requirement for it. I didn’t find my voice by thinking harder in private. I found it by showing up, sharing what felt true that day, and noticing what resonated.

You don’t have to pretend to be an expert; share from your experience

We don’t need more people pretending to have it all figured out. We need more people willing to be honest, relatable, and open enough to let others walk alongside them.

“We need more people willing to be honest, relatable, and open enough to let others walk alongside them.”

What’s often more compelling than the final result is the journey itself – the micro-moments that shape you along the way. The mistakes you’ve made. The challenges you learned from. The times you took the long, circuitous route. The moments when things unexpectedly worked out, or when you met someone who shifted the trajectory of your life.

Instead of trying to polish everything into “content,” start sharing what’s already present for you:

  • What have you been thinking about lately?
  • How did you make whatever you’re sharing?
  • What are you learning in real time?
  • What’s something you wish you knew before that now feels like a no-brainer?
  • How do you feel about sharing your work?
  • Who do you hope it reaches?

Sharing what’s alive in you today is where authenticity and connection stem from. You don’t need to position yourself as an expert. Being just 10% ahead of someone is 100% valuable to them.

It’s all material for your growth

Whatever feelings arise for you around this process — note them. They are not trying to stop you from moving forward… they are just ready to be felt so that you can move to your next level.

Whether it’s imposter syndrome, self-doubt, shame, embarrassment, self-judgment… see them for what they are: opportunities to release something that’s been holding you back, instead of roadblocks to what you want.

“Someone out there is looking for exactly what you have to offer. “

You don’t have to become an influencer, over-expose yourself, or suddenly feel completely fearless. The only goal is to take one step at a time — to share what’s already inside you and trust that the path will reveal itself as you keep moving.

Start where you are, and let yourself be seen a little more than yesterday. Someone out there is looking for exactly what you have to offer.

So if there’s something you’ve been wanting to say or share, consider this your permission slip. I’ll be cheering you on.

What is anti-racism in 2026? For me, surprisingly, it’s about hope.

I remember the desperate fervor that filled me and many others in 2020 after the murder of George Floyd and during the height of the Black Lives Matter movement. It was a familiar anguish — a grief I felt and still feel for people I will never meet, like Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Breonna Taylor, and so many others whose names I will never know. But it was an unfamiliar hope that change was not just possible, but inevitable.

“Now, I feel a shift. And it’s the shift I hope turns the key to real change.”

Somehow, I still feel it now. Not despite the past year of dinner conversations turning to words like “fascism” and “polycrisis,” but because of those conversations. I remember that old advice to never talk about politics at the dinner table. Or when even the term “anti-racism” felt too complex to broach in casual conversation. Now, I feel a shift. And it’s the shift I hope turns the key to real change.

Holding onto hope, however, is a practice. One that cannot be sustained alone. Hope is a community practice, and, now more than ever, it’s being sustained by communities online.

While real-life activism matters — from protests to engaging with local mutual aid networks — in our digital age, speaking truth to power often happens online and on social media. From bearing witness to the experiences of marginalized communities to educating ourselves and others, I find our access to information inspiring. However, as information floods our feeds, curating our sources is more important than ever.

“As information floods our feeds, curating our sources is more important than ever.”

What should we look for in the anti-racist educators we trust? My general rule is to trust research-based, credential-backed sources over sensationalist hot takes. By contextualizing our current moment in history, theory, and politics, these educators are also more hopeful. They know the power that collective action has had in the past. And they can help us hold the current moment to sustain our hope for the future.

Summary: Hiya Kids Daily Hydration is a kid-friendly electrolyte drink mix designed to support hydration, digestion, and overall wellbeing without added sugar or artificial ingredients. Formulated with balanced electrolytes, real fruit powders, and prebiotic fiber, it’s tailored to children’s needs during active play, hot days, illness, or everyday hydration. In practice, it proved both enjoyable for kids and reassuring for a parent seeking clean, minimal, science-backed nourishment.

What I love:

  • Clean, thoughtfully formulated with no added sugar, artificial dyes, or unnecessary fillers, and third-party tested for safety
  • Kid-approved taste from real fruit powders, making water more appealing without sugary juices or sports drinks
  • Includes electrolytes plus prebiotic fiber and bonus nutrients to support hydration, gut health, immunity, and stable energy

Things to keep in mind:

  • Powder requires extra stirring or a frother to fully dissolve
  • May feel unnecessary for kids who already hydrate well with plain water
  • As a supplement, it’s an added cost compared to water or homemade hydration options

I watch from the kitchen window as my two children ride their scooters in the cul-de-sac with the other neighborhood kids. He’s two, she’s four, and they have respective blue and pink scooters that light up when they get going fast enough. The dads chat with each other close by, spaced far enough apart to serve as a barrier between the kids and the open world beyond our street.

So much of parenthood centers around keeping our little ones regulated, which is why if you ask me for parenting advice, I won’t have much to say other than this: When in doubt, go outside, keep them nourished, and sneak in as many snuggles as possible. These practices are tried and true in our day-to-day lives and, in my experience, the fastest way to better sleep, generally cheerful moods, and happy, growing kids.

“My north stars are prioritizing protein when possible, encouraging hydration, and incorporating fiber when we can.”

As for nourishment, my north stars are prioritizing protein when possible, encouraging hydration, and incorporating fiber when we can (this is the hardest one for us!). All of this keeps their blood sugar levels stable and their digestion moving, leading to brains and bodies that are active and properly processing the world around them.

As a mother, my mind is constantly scanning my surroundings for the best, most efficient ways to keep us all well and thriving, and I approach any tools that can support us in this way with cautious optimism. I lean more minimal when it comes to supplements, but I’d heard about Hiya’s good reputation and was intrigued when I read about their formulation that includes balanced minerals and prebiotic fiber.

About Hiya

Hiya is a kids’ supplement brand founded in 2019 by two dads, Darren Litt and Adam Gillman, who were frustrated by the lack of healthy options for children’s vitamins after seeing popular gummy supplements that were high in sugar and artificial additives. They wanted a cleaner, science-backed alternative they could confidently give their own kids, so they teamed up with pediatricians and nutritionists to formulate products with essential nutrients and no added sugar or unnecessary fillers.

“Their products use carefully selected, transparent ingredients, avoid artificial dyes and sugars, and are made in cGMP-compliant facilities.”

From the start, Hiya has emphasized high safety and ingredient standards. Their products use carefully selected, transparent ingredients, avoid artificial dyes and sugars, and are made in cGMP-compliant facilities.

Every batch of Hiya’s supplements is third-party tested for contaminants such as heavy metals and microbes — one of the first things I personally look for in a supplement — and most of their products have been independently validated for purity and earned independent certifications like the Clean Label Project, including the hydration support.

Do kids really need a hydration supplement?

As a mother trying to strike the ever-elusive balance between doing all I can for my children and keeping overwhelm at bay, my first question regarding supplemental hydration was this: Do kids really need a hydration supplement? And if so, can’t they just have some of mine?

“Do kids really need a hydration supplement? And if so, can’t they just have some of mine?”

Here is what I learned: Hydration support is most important during active play or sports, hot days, and whenever kids are likely to sweat or need additional hydration, like when they’re traveling or under the weather. Furthermore, because children’s electrolyte needs and palates differ from adults’, this kid-targeted blend helps maintain fluid balance without excess sodium or added sugars, making it suitable for everyday use, school days, and on-the-go hydration.

Hiya Kids Daily Hydration is a gentle, kid-friendly electrolyte drink mix designed to make water more appealing while supporting healthy hydration throughout the day. Unlike traditional sugary sports drinks, it’s formulated with real fruit powders — including strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, cherry, orange, and lemon — that give a naturally fruity taste without artificial dyes or sweeteners. These fruit powders come from concentrated real fruits, providing flavor and a small amount of vitamin C while keeping the ingredient list clean and recognizable.

“It’s formulated with real fruit powders — including strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, cherry, orange, and lemon — that give a naturally fruity taste without artificial dyes or sweeteners.”

The formula balances key electrolytes like potassium, sodium, and magnesium with Himalayan pink salt and coconut water to help replenish minerals kids lose through play, illness, sports, or warm weather activity. My favorite thing about Hiya’s hydration for kids is that it also includes prebiotic fiber from artichoke inulin to support gut health, digestion, immunity, and stabilize blood sugar levels, and bonus nutrients like vitamin C, calcium, and iron.

Unboxing and first sips

As any parent knows, a small task can seemingly take ages, which can be a drag if you’re trying to get somewhere in a hurry. But this can also be a gift if you’d like to turn a simple task into an activity! That’s exactly what we did with our Hiya bundles.

Each kit comes with its own package of stickers to personalize their containers, so of course, we got to work right away. Afterward, my daughter enjoyed pouring the powder into their containers, and my son enjoyed licking the remnants off the countertop.

Unprompted, my daughter said, “Tasty! Thank you, mama,” when she had her first sips. I mean, that’s about as good as it gets as far as kid reviews go! I tried it too, and honestly, I am happy to polish off the rest of theirs when they inevitably get distracted and run off to play. It reminds me of strawberry lemonade, and I plan to serve it to them over ice and with a crazy straw on hot summer days later in the year.

“Unprompted, my daughter said, ‘Tasty! Thank you, mama,’ when she had her first sips. I mean, that’s about as good as it gets as far as kid reviews go!”

I’ll note that the powder takes quite a bit of stirring to dissolve, and I recommend using a frother for more seamless mixing. Nevertheless, if you don’t have a frother, putting it in their water bottle at the beginning of the day, giving it a few good shakes, and leaving it to finish dissolving on the countertop ahead of school drop-off works well, too.

The powder takes quite a bit of stirring to dissolve, and I recommend using a frother for more seamless mixing.

My favorite thing about Hiya’s hydration for kids is not only is it a fun treat I can give to my kids that serves as a highlight in their day, but it’s also a steady reinforcement to their immune, nervous system, and gut health. Happy juice for them, sigh of relief for me.

Final thoughts

I recommend Hiya’s hydration support as a helpful tool in any parent’s arsenal that can support kids’ hydration, digestion, and overall wellbeing. It’s also a fantastic alternative if you have a chronic juice drinker and would like to transition them to something with less sugar and more health benefits.

When you receive your bundle in the mail, be sure to clear the hour ahead — mix some potions, craft with stickers, and make some memories together! Such things are the most nourishing parts of their childhood, after all.

Don’t forget to cheers for healthy hydration!

Our team has tested and researched dozens of strollers for our babies — these are our top selections for safety, non-toxic materials, and design across a range of price points.

You know what baby gear isn’t really optional? A stroller. For most parents, it’s part of daily survival. It’s how we get out of the house when we’re exhausted, how we squeeze in fresh air when the days feel long, and how we manage errands, walks, travel, and life with a baby (or toddler) in tow. Our strollers get folded and unfolded, lifted in and out of the trunk with one hand, and pushed over cracked sidewalks while we’re juggling coffee, snacks, and everything else we bring “just in case.”

Because of all that, a stroller has to work — and work well. It needs to be lightweight but sturdy, easy to maneuver, ergonomic for tired bodies, and comfortable enough that our baby actually wants to sit (and hopefully nap) in it. When we finally make it outside for a walk, we want it to feel calming and enjoyable, not like another thing to wrestle with.

And once those basics are covered, many of us start thinking about something else: what our baby is actually sitting in. Stroller seats and straps are in constant contact with their skin (and mouth, iykyk), and not all fabrics are created equal. Some are treated with flame retardants, PFAS (often called “forever chemicals”), and other synthetic finishes we’d rather keep out of our children’s everyday environment. That’s usually when the search begins for a stroller that functions beautifully and is made from safer materials.

The good news? Parents don’t have to choose between performance and peace of mind — not anymore. More brands are finally listening and designing strollers that are lightweight, thoughtfully engineered, and made with non-toxic fabrics that support babies’ comfort and our sanity. The strollers below are raising the bar, and as very tired parents, we’re genuinely grateful for it.

What stroller materials are safest for everyday use?

If you’re trying to limit unnecessary chemical exposure (without sacrificing comfort or practicality), here are some fabrics and certifications that are worth paying attention to:

GREENGUARD GOLD certified fabrics
Products with this certification are tested for low chemical emissions, especially volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can off-gas into the air and contribute to indoor air pollution. GREENGUARD Gold is a more stringent standard designed for sensitive groups, such as children. This means certified products tend to release fewer chemicals into the air than uncertified ones, which can be beneficial for items your baby uses frequently.

Organic cotton
Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, and because it’s a natural fiber, it doesn’t typically require chemical finishes. That makes it a good choice for breathability and comfort, especially next to baby’s skin. Many stroller brands that prioritize safer materials use cotton certified organic or GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard).

Wool or wool-blend fabrics
Wool has natural temperature-regulating properties and is inherently more flame-resistant than many synthetic fibers, allowing some manufacturers to avoid adding chemical flame retardants to meet safety standards. That said, true wool-blend strollers are less common than polyester, and you’ll want to check whether manufacturers treat wool in other ways.

Responsibly made recycled fabrics
Many strollers use polyester or nylon — because these materials are durable and easy to clean — but you can find versions made from recycled PET or other recycled inputs. These don’t automatically guarantee “non-toxic,” but some brands are certified (e.g., OEKO-TEX or GREENGUARD) or make explicit claims to be free of PFAS and flame retardants to minimize harmful chemical treatments.

A few nuances worth noting:

  • “Non-toxic” doesn’t have a single legal definition for strollers — no stroller can realistically be 100% free of all synthetics and chemicals, and there’s no mandatory safety test for fabrics the way there is for car seats or cribs.
  • Certifications like GREENGUARD Gold focus on emissions, not every possible harmful ingredient — so they’re one sound signal, but not a guarantee of zero exposure.
  • Labels such as OEKO-TEX or GOTS can also be strong indicators of low chemical residue levels, especially for fabrics that come into contact with skin.

Our criteria:

There’s no shortage of stroller options, from long-standing baby brands to newer, sustainability-focused companies. To help simplify the decision, we’ve curated this list using the criteria below and regularly update it as better materials and innovations emerge.

  • NONTOXIC MATERIALS | We prioritize strollers made without harmful chemicals like flame retardants, PFAS, BPA, and phthalates. Many of our picks feature GREENGUARD GOLD certified fabrics, organic textiles, or naturally resilient materials like wool.
  • DESIGN, SAFETY & FUNCTIONALITY | Every stroller we recommend meets essential safety standards while offering thoughtful, practical design — from ergonomic seating to sturdy construction that lasts through multiple stages (and siblings).
  • SUSTAINABILITY & VALUE | Our selections span a range of price points, but each one delivers strong value through durability, responsible sourcing, and safer materials. Investing in a well-made, non-toxic stroller isn’t just a purchase — it’s a long-term investment in your family’s health and a more sustainable future.

Looking for more nontoxic baby gear? Check out our guide to nontoxic carseats and our Nuna stroller review.

1. Nuna

GOTS certified
Greenguard certified
Natural materials
Third party tested
Warranty offered

Best For | Everyday strollers, travel systems, and parents who want premium design with safer materials
Nontoxic Materials | GREENGUARD Gold certified fabrics; select models feature Merino wool + TENCEL™ lyocell inserts
Features We Love | Lightweight designs, UPF 50+ canopies, single-hand fold, smooth suspension, near-flat recline options, generous storage baskets, 360 swivel wheels
Prices Starting At | $425+

Nuna is a go-to brand for parents seeking a high-quality, non-toxic stroller built for daily use. It’s the brand our editors love and trust most (read our Nuna review here) because the carseats and strollers are thoughtfully designed for real life — they are easy to fold, smooth to push, and comfortable for even the most wiggly baby. The SWIV, for example, has a lightweight carbon fiber-reinforced aluminum frame, one-touch braking for safety, and a button-activated 360° rotation on all 4 wheels, enabling side-to-side motion and instant pivot navigation. Fancy, no!?

Many Nuna strollers are GREENGUARD Gold Certified, meaning they meet strict standards for low chemical emissions. This matters for strollers, where babies are in close contact with the seat fabric and canopy. Some models, like the Nuna TRIV next, also include a removable insert made with Merino wool and TENCEL™ lyocell, which are naturally breathable and gentle on baby’s skin.

Functionally, Nuna strollers are both comfortable and convenient. The TRVL is especially popular for travel thanks to the lightweight frame and self-folding design (our editors have taken them on flights with ease), while the MIXX next works well as an everyday stroller with its smooth suspension, supportive recline, and spacious storage basket.

If you’re searching for a stroller that’s easy to use, comfortable for your baby, and made with safer materials, Nuna is a reliable, well-designed option that holds up to everyday life.

2. UPPAbaby

Greenguard certified
Natural materials
Third party tested
Warranty offered

Best For | Growing families who want a stroller system with flexible configurations (including options that support multiple kids, depending on model)
Nontoxic Materials | GREENGUARD Gold certified strollers (low chemical emissions), products meet applicable flammability standards without brominated/chlorinated chemicals like PBBs/PBDEs
Features We Love | Expandable seating (single to double), large UPF 50+ canopies, reversible seats, generous storage baskets, smooth suspension, adjustable handlebars
Prices Starting At |$250+

UPPAbaby is a brand we love and trust for baby gear that is solid, intuitive, and built to last. The strollers are designed for daily use — they are easy to steer, steady on uneven sidewalks, and spacious enough to carry everything that somehow comes along for every outing.

On the materials side, many UPPAbaby strollers are GREENGUARD Gold Certified, meeting the strict standards for low chemical emissions. The brand also states that its products meet required flammability standards without using certain brominated or chlorinated flame-retardant chemicals, which is an important consideration for fabric safety.

What really sets UPPAbaby apart, though, is the flexibility. Models like the Vista V3 are designed to adapt as your family grows, with options to move from a single stroller to configurations that accommodate multiple children (a huge sustainability win since you don’t need to get a new stroller). Reversible seats, large UPF 50+ canopies, and cushioned, adjustable seating help keep babies comfortable from newborn days through toddlerhood.

3. Bumbleride

Family owned
Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Recycled materials
Warranty offered

Best For | Active families who want an all-terrain stroller with a strong focus on safer, eco-conscious materials
Nontoxic Materials | OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 (Class I)–certified fabrics made from 100% recycled PET; free from flame retardants, PFAS, BPA, phthalates, PVC, lead, formaldehyde, and chlorine

Bumbleride is ideal for highly active parents or for those who live in rural areas. The stroller is designed for uneven sidewalks, dirt paths, and everywhere in between. The air-filled tires and full suspension make a noticeable difference on rougher terrain and deliver durability without compromising comfort.

Materials are where Bumbleride really stands apart, though. All stroller fabrics and padding are OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Class I certified, meaning they’re tested for harmful substances and considered safe for direct contact with babies. The brand also states its strollers are made without common chemical additives parents often try to avoid, including flame retardants and PFAS. Fabrics are produced from 100% recycled plastic bottles, balancing durability with a lower environmental footprint.

Moreover, these stroller seats are padded and supportive, and many models recline or lie flat for newborn use. The canopies offer ample coverage for longer outings, and the double stroller is perfect for twins or siblings.

4. Zoe

Features | Remote-locking front wheel, airless all-terrain tires, independent suspension, adjustable handlebar, compact one-hand fold that stands upright, seat supports kids up to 60 lbs
Prices Starting At | $650

The Guava Roam is built like a jogging stroller but without the clunky, oversized feel that usually comes with one. We appreciate that we can use it for real runs or everyday walks and errands without feeling like we’re pushing a tank. One of the best features is the remote-locking front wheel, which lets you switch from stroll mode to run mode right from the handlebars. Add in airless tires (no flats, ever) and independent suspension, and you get a ride that’s steady and comfortable even when the terrain isn’t.

And for a jogger, it’s surprisingly compact. It folds down smaller than most and stands on its own, making it much easier to get in and out of the car. The seat reclines for on-the-go naps, supports children up to 60 pounds, and is suitable from around six months — or from birth with a car seat adapter. Material-wise, the Roam is GREENGUARD Gold Certified, while the seat fabrics and sunshade are polyester. Read our editor’s review of the Guava pack-n-play to learn more about why we love this brand so much.

Note: earlier Roam models made between 2020 and 2021 were recalled due to a brake issue. Newer models aren’t affected, but it’s worth double-checking if you’re buying secondhand.

We’ve researched and tested dozens of natural probiotics — these are our top ten picks made with clean and organic ingredients for maximum benefit.

Probiotics are living organisms that are good for you (yes, they exist!) — think healthy bacteria, yeast, and spores. Once ingested, probiotic strains help restore your gut health, heighten immunity, reduce inflammation and allergies, and even support your mood.

Why should you look for natural and organic probiotics?

Natural and organic probiotics offer numerous benefits that conventional probiotics miss out on. They are free from harmful chemicals like pesticides, GMOs, and synthetics. Organic farming practices also contribute to a healthier soil ecosystem and higher quality ingredients that can be used in probiotic formulas to boost their benefits (think prebiotic fiber from organic fruits). Organic probiotics are also more sustainable, as less synthetics and better biodiversity in farming practices minimize adverse impacts on our environment.

As with any ingestible supplement, knowing what to look for in a healthy, effective probiotic is important. According to both the Cleveland Clinic and WebMD, you want to search for quality brand names. You’ll also want to look for a probiotic with one billion or more colony-forming units (CFUs) or active fluorescent units (AFUs), and check that it aligns with your preferred dosage and form (consider capsules, gummies, or powder).

We’ve found ten of the best and most trusted natural probiotics out there, ranging from USDA certified organic formulas for immunity, to vegan options for gut health and digestion, to natural capsules for pregnancy or vaginal health. We also recommend chatting with your doctor for personalized suggestions or before starting any new supplement. If you have a probiotic you already love, we’d love to hear in the comments below!

Our criteria:

  • NATURAL, HIGH-QUALITY INGREDIENTS | Each of these probiotics is made from natural ingredients that are third-party tested and highly effective.
  • AFFORDABILITY | We’ve offered a variety of choices for probiotics at various price points, prioritizing budget-friendly options.
  • ACTIVE FLUORESCENT UNITS (AFU) | Each of these brands provides detailed information on their CFU/AFU count, ensuring plenty of gut-friendly microorganisms are reaching your colon, where they’ll go to work!

We’ve taken clean supplements that support women’s health for years. Here are our favorite vaginal probiotics for addressing odor, discomfort, and pH balance.

As the voice for women’s healthcare becomes deservedly louder, vaginal health should be at the forefront of the conversation. Many women are faced daily with unpleasant and often life-disrupting symptoms that could be addressed. First, let’s get into a bit of vagina 101: Although the gut microbiome gets most of the attention, the vagina has one all of its own. It’s a kingdom of billions of microbes, and its state of well-being determines a women’s vaginal, gynecological, and urogenital health.

“Many women are faced daily with unpleasant and often life-disrupting symptoms that could be addressed.”

Just like the gut microbiome, the vaginal ecosystem fosters a delicate balance of these microbes. And also, like the gut, in order to remain healthy and resilient to problematic pathogens, the vaginal microbiome should be dominated by healthy, helpful bacteria and other microbes, which all happen to prefer a slightly acidic pH. Disruptions in vaginal health can be caused or compounded by stress, hormonal changes, and antibiotic use. An imbalance causes vaginal dysbiosis and negatively affects vaginal pH inviting more of the unfriendlies to take charge. Once those good bacteria are outnumbered, we are faced with numerous uncomfortable issues like malodor, irritation, bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections, and more. So, how do we ensure our lady parts stay happy, healthy, and balanced?

One way is with science-backed vaginal probiotics proven to be specifically beneficial to the vaginal microbiota. Although there are some crossover benefits of taking probiotics geared toward gut health, as mentioned, our vaginal ecosystem is unique in comparison and should be treated as such. Populating the vaginal barrier with beneficial probiotic strains helps prevent infection and combat symptoms. In addition, vaginal probiotics can help support fertility and pregnancy, and they may even help with symptoms that accompany perimenopause and menopause.

What should you look for in a good vaginal probiotic?

Probiotics that contain Lactobacillus strains (L. acidophilus, L. rhamnosus, L. reuteri, L. crispatus, L. gasseri, and Bifidobacterium lactis, etc.) are proven to be most effective at fortifying the vaginal microbiome. These strains work their magic by adhering to the vaginal lining and preventing pathogenic colonization. They also produce lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide to help maintain an optimal, slightly acidic pH. Most vaginal probiotics come in capsule form and should be taken regularly over time to allow for a true colonization effect. However, one option we include in our guide delivers a dose of beneficial bacteria straight to the source. When choosing a vaginal probiotic capsule, look for brands that are shelf stable or proven to survive the harsh digestive system so they can deliver that dose of beneficial bugs where they need to be. Worth noting: Some vaginal probiotics also contain ingredients to aid in the health of the urinary tract or are considered synbiotics — meaning they provide prebiotics to help feed the probiotics. We are all for anything that provides more comprehensive support to women’s health and wellness.

Our criteria:

Our team personally relies on clean supplements for our health, plus we’ve researched and corresponded with the best clean supplement brands on the market. Here are our top picks for vaginal probiotics for staying clean and comfy down there. We update this list regularly with emerging favorites that meet our criteria.

  • CLEAN INGREDIENTS | The brands on this list use natural and organic ingredients without any unnecessary fillers — and we’ve noted which have been third-party tested.
  • SCIENCE-BACKED | These probiotic formulations are driven by the latest research, and backed by medical and scientific experts for maximum effectiveness with fewer side effects. We’ve noted CFU and/or AFU count for each option.
  • SUSTAINABLE | We’ve prioritized brands that use ethical and sustainable business practices from thoughtful sourcing to labor practices to packaging.

This guide may be laser-focused on vagina-specific probiotics, but proper health and wellness are achieved when we treat our bodies holistically. Check out our guide to the best probiotics for gut health to ensure your healthy whole-body microbiota.

1. Seed

Science backed
Soy free

Vegan

Best For | Rapid results
Functional Ingredients | 3 studied strains of L. crispatus
Prices Starting At | $99 for the 2-month starter kit, then $40/month after

Seed’s VS-01 is the first vaginal probiotic suppository clinically validated for effectiveness. VS-01 was the result of Dr. Jaques Ravel’s long-time research, which discovered that three specific strains of L. crispatus provide some of the most potent defenses against the bad guys within the vaginal microbiota. Every woman who participated in the VS-01 trial saw a regulated vaginal pH. VS-01 uses a two-phase process that safely interacts with epithelial cells in the vagina — first to colonize it with L. crispatus, then to maintain it for ongoing resiliency. The slow-release delivery technology of the VS-01 vaginal suppository is designed to maximize exposure to the vaginal wall and was tested for biocompatibility with the vaginal environment. Note that VS-01 should not be started or used during menstruation!

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

It’s no surprise that our bodies’ needs rapidly change day to day, between our cycles, life stages, and age. So it’s hard to always get all the nutrition we need through our regular diets — and it’s even harder to find clean options that work for our lifestyles and preferences. But with a multivitamin, we can help close the gap in our nutrition and get the much-needed support our bodies need (think better gut health, immunity, hair and skin, and more).

Luckily, there’s a growing number of women-focused multivitamin brands cropping up in the space, and they’re mostly made by women for women. Many of them are vegan or vegetarian-friendly, free of allergens and fillers, and are even fully traceable, so we always know what ends up in our bodies. (This is key, too, since the FDA doesn’t evaluate the safety of most multivitamins out there!)

Why do doctors recommend multivitamins for women?

Doctors agree that adding a multivitamin to your daily routine can help women reach all the necessary nutrition requirements that can be tough to get based on diet, environment, and overall health needs. A multivitamin can help fill in any nutrient gaps and provide support where deficiencies may be occurring.

Women often have very specific nutrient requirements based on different stages of life. Iron deficiency is common, which can often be caused by heavy menstrual bleeding. Those who are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant require additional folic acid to help support a fetus. Osteoporosis is a common condition in women, and higher doses of calcium and vitamin D can help support bone health. With all these possible scenarios and more, doctors may recommend women to take multivitamins to help supplement where necessary, in order to improve overall health and wellbeing.

Multivitamins also help provide essential nutrients that are harder to get on a daily basis due to medications, diets, or medical conditions that can limit the appropriate amount of nutrition absorption from food. When we have the appropriate vitamin and mineral levels in our bodies, you will likely experience better energy levels, immune function, and skin and bone health.

How to choose the best women’s multivitamin for you:

The “for you” is key here! There is an overwhelming number of options when it comes to women’s multivitamins, so it is vital to assess your personal needs before choosing one. According to most of the information out there, you’ll want a multivitamin that includes essential nutrients such as vitamins B12 and D, calcium, magnesium, folate, iron, and zinc. The options we tested all have varying concentrations of these ingredients, so you’ll want to look at the serving size in each dosage.

Always consider various factors, such as your current diet and lifestyle, as well as your age and life stage. This is especially true, as mentioned, because women’s nutrient needs change with age. Menstruating women under 50 need more iron and folate, while women 50 years young, most likely need to supplement calcium and vitamin D. If your diet is lacking, look for a multivitamin that provides almost 100% of the Daily Value (DV) recommended for most vitamins and minerals.

If you have a balanced and healthy, nutrient-rich diet, you may still benefit from a multivitamin, but would be well-supported with a simple one that provides foundational support. Remember, it is always a balance and you should avoid combining nutritional supplements that push you over the recommended amounts of vitamins and minerals. Choosing a reputable brand that utilizes third-party lab testing to verify the product’s safety and effectiveness is essential!

Which form of multivitamin is right for you?

Choosing the best form of multivitamin for you is crucial and depends on several factors, including absorption needs, lifestyle, and personal preferences. We have outlined some notable qualities of the various forms. For our review, we tested liquid, capsule, powder, and gummies as these tend to be easiest to take and offer the most bioavailable options.

Liquid multivitamins: Liquid-form multi-vitamins are regarded as having a superior absorption rate compared to pills or gummies and are considered ideal for individuals with digestive issues or those who struggle to swallow tablets. Liquids may require refrigeration, have a shorter shelf life, and sometimes contain added flavors or sweeteners that may not suit everyone’s taste.

Powders: Powders offer better absorption than traditional tablets or capsules because they dissolve easily and are quickly available for the body to absorb. The downsides to these can include taste and texture, and they tend to be messier and less convenient. They may also lose potency if not stored correctly, which is most often in the refrigerator.

Capsules: Capsules generally offer good potency and bioavailability, and contain more absorbable forms of nutrients. You’ll want to ensure your capsules are free from added sugars and unnecessary fillers. Like tablets, capsules may be hard to swallow for some and can be more expensive than basic multivitamins. If you are Vegan, you’ll also want to pay attention to what the capsule is made of, as some use animal-sourced gelatin capsules versus plant-based cellulose. And some brands even have patented capsule forms that are unique and designed to be time-released.

Tablets: Tablets are widely recommended and utilized because they offer a shelf-stable and affordable option. Nutrient absorption and bioavailability, however, can be less efficient than with liquids, and many people complain that this form is the most difficult to swallow and is more likely to cause an upset stomach.  Gummies: Gummies may be appealing for anyone who struggles to swallow pills or capsules. While convenient and often tasty, gummies may contain added sugars and generally provide lower doses of nutrients compared to other forms of nutrition.

Our criteria:

For this guide, I spot tested each brand by taking them one by one on separate days, following the guidelines for dosing on an empty stomach or with food. We took into account, in real-time for that day, the form they came in, solubility, palatability (smell, flavor, texture), and the ease of daily incorporation. We also noted immediate effects on energy levels, mood, and digestion. Since we didn’t test these vitamins for the long term, we relied on research to demonstrate ingredient effectiveness and proof of bioavailability, as well as customer reviews and notes from our editors who have shown long-term results. We regularly update this guide with new formulations that meet the criteria below:

A variety of supplement bottles, capsules, powders, and drinks are arranged on a wooden table with green plants in the background.
For this guide, I tested the short-term experience of taking these vitamins over the course of a few days each, revaluating the form they came in, solubility, palatability (smell, flavor, texture), and the ease of daily incorporation.

Ritual isn’t just another DTC brand with great marketing (although it’s that too!). It’s a wellness company that’s clinically backed by doctors, researchers, and scientists. We love the multivitamin options here because they offer curated formulations for every life stage and gender, including those for children and teenagers. The best-seller, the Essential For Women Multivitamin, has been clinically tested and is fully traceable for maximum efficacy and safety. It offers nine nutrients, including 250% of your daily Vitamin D3, as well as 333% of your recommended B12. There’s a hefty dose of iron (44%) that women also need, as well as vitamin E, magnesium, boron, and omega-3s. All the essentials in just two vegan capsules.

Our Editor’s Review | “Ritual takes a ‘less is more’ approach, aiming to fill the gaps in a healthy diet, not replace it. I sampled the once-a-day daily dose of two of the Women’s Essential 18+ capsules, which contain just enough nutrients to supplement what you may not be getting from even the healthiest of diets, including Vitamin D3, vegan- and sustainability-sourced Omega-3 DHA, bioactive Vitamin B12, and chelated iron. These space-age-looking, patented time-release capsules contain the various oils and tiny nutrient pellets, and the design is intended to maximize bioavailability of what is contained within, keeping fat-soluble and water-soluble elements separated. The capsules do not need to be refrigerated, adding to their convenience. In terms of effectiveness, in a randomized, double blind, placebo clinical study the brand took part in in partnership with Auburn University, the Essential for Women 18+ was shown to increase vitamin D, Omega 3 DH, A, and Folate after 12 weeks of use.

After taking the recommended dose of two easy-to-swallow capsules, I found Ritual’s Women’s 18+ to be an accessible way to incorporate a daily multivitamin into a simple morning routine. Upon opening the bottle, there was a slightly fishy smell (even though they are vegan), but given these are mint-essenced, I did not find the initial smell off-putting. On the first sample day, I took the dose with food and a glass of water. On day 2, I took both capsules on an empty stomach and experienced no issues, including no tummy ache or – dare we say – “burping up” the flavors. The mint essence even seemed to offer the unintentional benefit of better breath.

2. Perelel

Best For | Overall health & skin
Natural & Organic Ingredients | Gluten-free, soy-free, non-GMO, free of fillers
Price | $47/month; discounted subscriptions available (15% off)

Founded by OB/GYNs and women’s health doctors, Perelel is one of the leading vitamin brands for women, including prenatals, PCOS support, and, yes, a daily supplement. The Women’s Daily Vitamin Trio supports you inside and out with three pills in a daily packet. It includes a multivitamin, an omega, and a collagen/biotin capsule for stronger hair, skin, and nails. The multivitamin touts all the major vitamins and nutrients like folate, zinc, and niacin, all blended together in a no-nausea formulation. (And a note: If you avoid fish, you won’t want to take the omega as it’s made with fish oil, but the rest is vegetarian-friendly). Stay in tip-top shape with these multivitamins from head to toe.

Our Editor’s Review | “Perelel’s Women’s Daily Vitamin Trio comes as a monthly supply of convenient single-dose packets. This power-packed trio supports you inside and out with three pills in a daily packet. As a busy and working mom of two, I found it refreshing to just grab a Trio pack from the box and pop the no-guess three capsules in my mouth with a glass of water, then start my day. I took these with breakfast, and I felt no sour tummy or side effects of any sort throughout the day. I also did not ‘taste’ the vitamins at all after swallowing them. I loved the convenience and peace of mind knowing I was covering all the bases and getting a little extra support for my aging hair, skin, and nails.”

Natural & Organic Ingredients | Free from top 8 allergens, prop 65 compliant, research-backed nutrients, no unnecessary additives or preservatives
Price | $50/month; discounted subscriptions available (10+% off)
Frequency & Dose | 3 capsules daily
Form | Capsules

FullWell’s Women’s Multivitamin is designed to provide long-term reproductive support, giving your body the nutrients it’s most likely missing thanks to stress, busy schedules, and less-than-perfect diets. It’s packed with 23+ vitamins and minerals in highly absorbable forms — think B vitamins, vitamin D, magnesium, iodine, and choline — plus advanced antioxidants like CoQ10 and PQQ to support energy, hormone balance, bone health, and overall wellness. It’s thoughtfully formulated to leave out iron and omega-3s so you can personalize those based on your own needs, and every batch is third-party tested for purity and safety. Just three capsules a day cover your bases from the inside out!

Our Editor Review | “FullWell is a supplement brand I have long trusted – I took their prenatal while going through IVF and throughout my pregnancy. Now that I’m no longer pregnant or going through fertility treatments, I’ve switched to the multivitamin for a supplement that targets long-term reproductive and overall wellness. I love that it includes advanced antioxidants, like CoQ10 and PQQ, as well as all the essentials (B vitamins, vitamin D, magnesium, iodine, and choline). Unlike the prenatal which is a whopping 8 pills a day, the multivitamin is three much smaller pills that can be taken with or without food. I have never experienced any nausea when taking them on an empty stomach and the taste is a minimal vitamin-type taste, if noticeable at all. The brand even claims you can break open the capsules and mix the powder into a beverage if you struggle getting them down.” – Kayti Christian, Senior Content Strategist

According to Needed research, 95 percent of women aren’t meeting their nutrition needs even if consuming the healthiest of diets. That’s why the team created a supportive and complementary multivitamin containing a wide range of bioavailable forms of nutrients, specifically for women. The Women’s Multi formulation helps support your energy, hormone balance, thyroid health, immunity, and beauty, thanks to its 23 bioavailable nutrients (Including biotin, magnesium, vitamin A, B12, C, D, and E.) but does not contain what Needed feels are poorly absorbed forms of nutrients or those best taken separately like Iron and Omegas. Capsules are manufactured at a FDA, GMP, and QAI-certified organic facility, are expert-backed by nutritionists, naturopaths, and OB/GYNs, and are third-party tested. It’s about as clean as you can get! Three pills a day for your best self? Sign us up.

Our Editor’s Review | “Needed clearly created their Citrus Women’s Multivitamin with the olfactory-brain connection in mind. As soon as I opened the container, I was greeted with the welcoming and mouth-watering smell of citrus. That’s because each bottle contains an EU food-compliant citrus sachet to enhance the scent and taste, with no loss of quality or additional ingredients. These also come unscented, but I highly recommend the citrus. Directions say to take the 3-capsule dose daily with food, ideally in the morning or at lunchtime, for optimal energy. But it can also be divided throughout the day into one pill with each meal if you prefer. It’s great that this bottle can be stored at room temperature. I took the 3-capsule dose with lunch and can attest that the citrus sensory experience was enjoyable, even leaving a hint of citrus taste in my mouth. These would be great for people who are put off by the smell of vitamins but want the capsule option.

IM8 Daily Ultimate Essentials All-in-One Supplement was co-founded by soccer star David Beckham and developed by experts from the Mayo Clinic and NASA. In the name, “IM” stands for “I AM,” which the brand says promotes self-empowerment and identity. The number “8” symbolizes balance, infinity, and continuous improvement, reflecting the brand’s commitment to ongoing personal development and well-being. It also supports 8 key components of maintaining good health: Energy, Immunity, Cognitive Function, Digestion, Cardiovascular Health, Hydration, Nourishment, and Cellular Renewal. This once-daily drink is designed to replace up to 16 supplements and provides 92 ingredients in one dose, proven to boost energy, enhance digestion, and support overall wellness. IM8 has been clinically proven to support quick absorption and provides an all-in-one nutrient boost while also minimizing stomach discomfort.  As an added bonus, IAM8’s patented ingredient CRT8™️(Cell Rejuvenation Technology) promotes cellular health and encourages autophagy, and fights oxidative stress. The brand recommends storing the provided container and keeping it refrigerated to maintain optimal nutrient content. Directions instruct you to mix a dose of the powder with 8 to 12 ounces of water and take it with or after a balanced, healthy meal to maximize absorption.

Our Editor’s Review | “I must admit that I was intrigued by the bold marketing and packaging of this product. I received the full starter kit, which included a space-aged-looking shaker made of aluminum with a clear plastic window to measure out water. A scoop for accurate dosing and a 30-day supply. To test the powder, I measured out a dose using the metal spoon provided and mixed it with 12 ounces of water, giving the shaker a few good jolts before opening. The shaker leaked a bit while mixing, so I ended up pouring it into a different glass to drink. As recommended, I drank this while eating a balanced meal, and it sat well with no observed side effects. The taste, described as acai-mixed berries, was reminiscent of a well-known chewable kids’ vitamin, which I found nostalgic and enjoyable. There was a tiny bit of grittiness left at the bottom of the shaker, but that is normal for most powdered supplements. This drink left an odd aftertaste, but it did provide a boost of energy and I loved that it added to my daily hydration efforts.”

6. AG1

Climate neutral
Recycled materials
Vegan

Best For | Gut health & digestive support
Natural & Organic Ingredients | Vegan, organic ingredients, non-GMO, gluten-free, free of fillers & preservatives
Price | $99/month; discounted subscriptions available (20%+ off)
Frequency & Dose | 1 scoop daily
Form | Powder

If pills aren’t your thing, you may love AG1 (formerly Athletic Greens) in powder form. With just one scoop a day (mixed with eight ounces of water or your favorite fruit juice), you’ll enjoy a whopping 75 ingredients for gut and whole body health — including phytonutrients, pre- and probiotics, and multiminerals. Every ingredient is 100 percent traceable, vegan, paleo- and keto-friendly, and is trusted by leading doctors and scientists. Most users experience more balanced gut health within the first month! You can even opt for a 30-serving pouch or 30 individual travel packs when you’re on the go. A healthy habit to practice wherever you are. The brand has recently updated the formula to include even more benefits. Most notably, probiotics for added digestive support.

Our Editor’s Review | “The starter kit comes with everything you need to make this easy and convenient, including a metal scoop so you don’t need to question dosing and a well-made shaker. Although plastic, the shaker has thick walls and can go in the dishwasher, as well as a heavy metal screw top that should be handwashed. The shaker also displays measurements, allowing you to adjust the amount of water you mix with it according to your preference. We recommend taking this once a day, but it can be taken up to twice a day. It’s easy enough on your stomach to be taken without food, and AG1 is formulated with bioavailability at the top of mind, allowing it to be efficiently absorbed and utilized by the body. This is supported by a study that found AG1 powder to have higher bioavailability of minerals compared to a tablet multivitamin, and to show improved bioaccessibility of minerals, meaning a greater proportion of the minerals were available for absorption during digestion.

I have always been a fan of AG1 powder. The AG1 starter kit comes with a metal canister, and it is recommended that you pour the 30-day supply into it and keep it in the refrigerator. Word of caution: This is a messy process as the powder is so fine that it becomes airborne and creates a bit of a mess. I recommend you do this over the sink. AG1 dissolves extremely well in water, leaving little to no grit so no additional water needed to get it down. The taste, which the brand describes as pineapple-vanilla, is good, so there was no issue mixing it with just water as opposed to adding it to a smoothie or juice to tolerate the flavor. I’ve always chosen to take this on an empty stomach first thing in the morning (before coffee) and found it offers instant energy (it does contain caffeine) and, ahem, better digestion.

7. Mela

American made
BIPOC Owned
Vegan
Woman owned

Best For | A multivitamin by & for women of color
Natural & Organic Ingredients | Vegan, non-GMO, free of fillers, FDA registered facility, BPA-free and phthalate-free bottles
Price | $40/month; discounted subscriptions available (15% off)
Frequency & Dose | 2 capsules daily
Form | Capsules

Say hello to the first multivitamin by & for women of color! Mela Vitamins was founded by Ashley Harmon, an LA-based founder who was diagnosed with PCOS and a Vitamin D deficiency. During the discovery of her diagnosis, Harmon learned that 80% of melanated people are Vitamin D deficient and that melanin impacts how certain nutrients are produced in the body. Using this data and 10+ years of research, Mela was born and we couldn’t be more thrilled to include them in this list! As far as ingredients go, Mela is formulated with science-based nutrients (bioactive forms of essential vitamins A, C, D3, E, B6, B12), probiotics, and adaptogens (lion’s mane & Ceylon cinnamon) to support holistic wellness for melanated women. It’s also made in an FDA-registered facility, is third-party tested, and the bottle is recyclable and non-toxic.

Our Editor’s Review | “My first impression of Mela’s multivitamin was ‘WOW’ on personalization and presentation. This kit came in a beautiful box and contained a 30-month supply, a curated vitamin case, and a handwritten thank-you note. I am fair-skinned with freckles but also have Middle Eastern heritage, so I was intrigued by this specially formulated multivitamin that includes a few unique ingredients catering to darker-skinned women. A darker skin tone blocks harmful UV light than lighter skin tones, but that means a person with darker skin isn’t able to absorb and synthesize as much of the essential Vitamin D that comes from exposure to sunlight. Therefore, Mela is formulated to include a higher dose of Vitamin D, sourced from algae, and is vegan-friendly. Even though I live in abundant sunshine, every time I’ve had my vitamin D levels tested, they have been low, so I was excited about this boost of Vitamin D. I am also a big fan of the included 300mg of Ceylon Cinnamon, as it provides an antioxidant boost and improves blood sugar control and heart health. The Mela Multi-dose consists of two small, powder-filled vegan capsules taken daily. Mela recommends taking these with breakfast or lunch. I found these had a cinnamon-spicy smell when I opened them. They were easy to swallow and left no bad taste in my mouth, nor did they cause any side effects.

8. Seeking Health

American made
Recycled materials

Best For | Energy boosting
Natural & Organic Ingredients | Vegetarian options, non-GMO, gluten-free, free of preservatives
Price | $35/month; discounted subscriptions available (10%+ off)
Frequency & Dose | 8 capsules daily
Form | Capsules

Capsules, chewables, or powder? You don’t have to pick with Seeking Health — they’ve got ‘em all! This healthcare brand wants to help “optimize your life” and uses highly absorbable nutrients and quality production standards to help do so. The team is so confident in its products that every supplement here is backed with a 60-day money-back guarantee, so it’s worth the try! Choose from multivitamins with iron, for sensitive tummies, or vegetarian-friendly formulations. You can even grab their best seller (the Optimal Multivitamin designed by genetic expert Dr. Ben Lynch) in a multi-pack, so you’ll be set for months at a time. Seeking Health’s Optimal Multivitamin is one of the most comprehensive capsule multivitamins on the market, with added benefits for your liver, eyes, and brain. Each nutrient comes in a highly bioavailable, active form for optimal absorption. Do note that the Optimal Multivitamin is iron-free. While many adults do not require iron supplementation, as mentioned, menstruating women do, but it’s easy to add an iron supplement to the mix if you fit in that category.

Our Editor’s Review | “This multi comes in GMP-certified capsules made of plant cellulose as opposed to gelatin capsules. Seeking Health does use some lab-synthesized nutrients, but these are more highly concentrated forms of the nutrients and minerals that are needed. With a daily dose of eight capsules, testing Seeking Health’s Optimal Multivitamin was intimidating at first. I chose to split the dose into two, taking four capsules with breakfast and four with lunch. Out of all the multis we tested, this one offered the most ‘day-of’ sustained energy (we see why they say do not take it within 5 hours before bedtime). There was a slight “vitamin smell” upon ingestion, but I experienced no signs of tummy discomfort, and I didn’t feel like I was tasting these all day.”

Our Editor’s Review | “We tested two Thorne multivitamin options, each formulated based on age-specific needs. One was the Women’s Multi 50+, which is specifically designed to support the unique needs of perimenopausal or postmenopausal women. The 50+ multis are formulated with 23 nutrients that support bone health, estrogen metabolism, and cardiovascular function, while also providing immune support and promoting healthy blood vessels, nerves, skin, eyes, and overall metabolism. Because these are intended for peri- and post- menopausal women, there is no iron. We noticed that reviews indicate these work well for those who have previously experienced stomach discomfort from taking multivitamins. The other Thorne multi we tested was the Basic Nutrients 2/Day. Thorne designed these to minimize your capsule count while still providing the foundational support necessary for heart, brain, nerve, immune, bone, and skin health. Based on reviews, these are also tolerated well and are one of the most affordable capsule options on the market.

My only issue with the Basic Nutrients 2/Day was the strong smell. But since it is a relatively small dose, it wasn’t horrible! For day-of testing, I took the two regular-size powder-filled capsules at once, but you could certainly take one at breakfast and one at lunch. I did notice a slightly pink hue to the capsule, and I’m unclear what gives them that color, but I also knew there was nothing to worry about given the brand reputation. I chose to take these with food as the strong smell made me think that would be best. Although I experienced no stomach or digestive discomfort, I did feel as though I was ‘tasting’ these throughout the day. That said, I experienced a noticeable increase in energy.

For the Women’s Multi 50+, the dose is 3–6 capsules per day. Three will offer base benefits, and six will give optimal support. Although I am not yet in the 50+ age bracket, I am perimenopausal, so I was curious to see how I reacted and loved the idea that my body was being supported at my stage of life. I wanted to try the max dose, so I split it into 2 doses of three capsules each, taking three with breakfast and three with lunch. The most notable and immediate side effect was a niacin flush that occurred after the morning dose, which lasted approximately an hour. While a niacin flush does not cause any real harm, it can be rather uncomfortable and unsightly for an hour or so. If you are someone who experiences adverse reactions to higher doses of niacin (B3), this may not be the best option for you. I did not experience the flush after the second dose, and based on research, many people only experience niacin flush at the start of taking it prior to the body adjusting.”

Our Editor’s Review | “While I generally avoid gummy supplements that contain any sugar, Garden of Life’s Women’s Multi in Organic Whole Food Gummies are formulated using a certified organic real food vitamin blend to help you meet your daily needs. These not only offer nutritional support but promote energy, good metabolism, and contain cranberry to support urinary health and vegan-sourced high-dose Vitamin D. The serving size is four yummy berry-flavored chews, and it is recommended they be taken at once alongside a meal. These gummies do not contain any synthetic ingredients, artificial flavors, colorings, candy-like ingredients, or syrups. While they do contain 5 grams of sugar, 4 grams come from organic fruit, and they taste delicious — a true treat. They are Certified USDA Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, Certified Gluten Free, and Kosher. After taking the four recommended gummies with breakfast, I notice ZERO side effects and no gross aftertaste. These are perfect for those who don’t like or cannot swallow capsules or pills and who prefer gummies over powders.”

MaryRuth Organics’ Organic Women’s Multivitamin comes in liquid form in a BPA-free plastic bottle, designed to be refrigerated after opening. Not the most convenient, but liquid is said to be the most bioavailable form of supplementation. In this formula, the nutrients are also encapsulated in liposomes for maximum bioavailability and absorption in the gut. This women’s multivitamin includes the eight B vitamins to support vital functions, such as skin health, energy levels, metabolism, circulatory health, DNA and RNA synthesis, neurochemical production, and more. It also includes doses of biotin and pantothenic acid, which support nail and hair growth (backed by reviews from long-term users). An additional bonus is a proprietary botanical blend of yam, lysium berry, ashwagandha, and maca root, which offers stress support and energy. You’ll also get a dose of omega-3 and omega-9 fatty acids, which support cognitive, cardiovascular, and cellular health. If the price feels inaccessible, check out MaryRuth’s WeCare support program for discounts — everyone deserves access to healthy nutrition.

Our Editor’s Review | “I really wanted to love the vanilla-peach flavor, but it was thick and had a slightly fishy taste (likely due to the beneficial algal oil). The single-tablespoon dose is small but was difficult to consume on its own. I recommend mixing it with either a little water or juice. It can also be blended into smoothies or incorporated into foods. Dosing is not straightforward unless you dedicate a measuring spoon to it — but it’s a gentle enough formula that using a regular tablespoon from the silverware drawer might make it more convenient. I took this on an empty stomach, followed by water to wash out the flavor. I didn’t experience any adverse effects, such as stomachaches or digestive discomfort. For a more convenient option, you can get single-serving packets to have on hand for travel, which might also make dosing easier. While I didn’t experience any immediately beneficial effects, for long-term users, the bioavailability of this option might outweigh the ingestion method.

Our editors’ main criteria when shopping for organic multivitamins  🔎

Are there ingredients you should avoid in a women’s multivitamin?

It goes kinda without saying that it’s best to steer clear of any multivitamins that contain ingredients that may be harmful, poorly absorbed, or unnecessary. Excess amounts of specific nutrients (like fat-soluble vitamins and iron) can be dangerous, while an abundance of unnecessary water-soluble vitamins could end up being a waste of money since your body will not absorb excess anyway. And, of course, avoid synthetic and inferior forms of nutrients, as well as multivitamins that contain added sugar, fillers, or additives. High doses of beta-carotene or vitamin A, especially for former smokers, can increase health risks. And if you are vegan, check for animal-derived ingredients included in the formula and the capsules. We’ve highlighted some other ingredients it’d be best to avoid as well:

Titanium dioxide: A white pigment used for color but considered a carcinogen by the European Food Safety Authority.

Magnesium stearate: Used as a coating and may cause digestive issues in some people.

Sodium benzoate: A preservative that can form benzene (a carcinogen) when combined with vitamin C.

Maltodextrin: A highly processed filler with potential allergenic properties for individuals with corn sensitivities.

What are the potential risks or side effects of taking women’s multivitamins?

Women’s multivitamins are generally considered safe when taken as directed. That said, some women do experience mild and often temporary side effects like constipation, diarrhea, upset stomach, nausea, headache, flushing, and even an unpleasant taste in the mouth. But a serious risk mainly comes if you are combining supplements and take specific nutrients in excess. For example, high levels of Vitamin A can be toxic and cause headaches, liver damage, or bone weakness. While Vitamin D toxicity can cause nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, cognitive problems, heart or kidney issues. These are extreme examples, and it is very unlikely that toxic levels of these substances are consumed within a multivitamin. However, it is always best to consult your primary care physician if you are concerned and/or are taking other supplements or prescription medication. Also, it is worth noting that women should take special consideration of the ways a multi-vitamin formula may affect or skew lab results. If you are having bloodwork done, you might want to avoid taking multivitamins for a day or two prior to your appointment for blood or urine tests.

How should women choose between a multivitamin and targeted single-nutrient supplements?

Let’s be honest: There are a plethora of supplements that promise various benefits. Whether or not you go with a multi-vitamin versus a single-ingredient supplement depends on your goals and situation. Multivitamins are extremely convenient and offer broad coverage when the goal is to cover any nutritional gaps and support your overall health. Many also get mixed up with health fats, adaptogens, and herbal formulas for all-in-one convenience, allowing for easy incorporation into your daily routine. Also, many options include bonus nutrients to support hair, skin, and nails as well as promote gut health and absorption. In general, the fact that a multi covers so many bases in one dose will also save you money.

Single nutrient supplements, on the other hand, offer a more targeted approach to addressing specific deficiencies. However, using single-nutrient supplements can result in a cabinet full of bottles, and you may still miss other nutrient gaps.

A good rule of thumb is to opt for a multivitamin if your goal is broad support or if you are at a life stage with increased overall needs (e.g., pregnancy, peri- or post-menopause). Consider single-nutrient supplements if you have a doctor-diagnosed or tested deficiency or a specific health concern that requires a targeted dose of one specific nutrient, and then be sure to retest after taking it for a while.

Why does the FDA not review supplements, and what are other certifications to look for?

This gets confusing! The FDA does not have the authority to approve dietary supplements or their labeling before they reach the market. Instead, manufacturers are responsible for ensuring their products are safe and properly labeled before sale. The best way to find out how reputable a brand is would be to purchase from companies willing to implement standards that earn them third-party certifications. You’ll want to look for third-party certifications from organizations like USP, NSF, or ConsumerLab to signal a supplement company is committed to the highest standards and accountability. Also, a Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certification ensures consistent quality across batches and helps identify any defects or inconsistencies in formulation.

Why is third-party testing important?

Third-party testing is essential when choosing quality supplements, as it provides independent, unbiased verification of a product’s safety, quality, and accuracy, thereby safeguarding consumers in a largely self-regulated industry. These third-party labs test supplements for harmful contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides, microbes, and undeclared substances, which reduces the risk of adverse health effects. They also confirm that a supplement contains the ingredients listed on the label, in the correct amounts and potency, as stated. And third-party testing protects us, the consumers, from ingesting unsafe ingredients.

I attended church two to three times a week as a child, memorizing the ABCs and primary colors alongside prayers and Bible scriptures. But it wasn’t until I was in my 20s that I began constructing my own spiritual identity. Though I’ve strayed in many ways from the religious teachings of my youth, I’ve also discovered reverence for some of the principles that I learned as a child. Discipline, for example, and the outward expression of gratitude continue to prove invaluable in my life. Serving with my money and time and cultivating the fruits of the spirit (love, joy, peace, patience) have also stayed with me.

Of course, one doesn’t need to have had a religious upbringing to practice these principles or belong to a religious institution. Spirituality is entirely inclusive, as it invites questioning and celebrates continued transformation.

“Spirituality is entirely inclusive, as it invites questioning and celebrates continued transformation.”

Whether you’re curious about developing a practice for the first time or you’re eager to deepen your existing one, the following are some of my favorite, simple paths to spirituality.

1. Prayer and meditation

One of the simplest ways to cultivate a spiritual practice is through prayer and meditation. I’ve found these disciplines help me return to the current moment and root myself in the present (the “what is”) rather than the past (which I can’t change) or the future (which I can’t control). Prayer may make more sense if you subscribe to a higher power(s), while meditation and mindfulness are sacred, time-tested rituals that anyone can experience. Try these meditation tips from the Dalai Lama. Alternatively, the Headspace App is an incredible and affordable resource for guided meditation (you can try it for free with a two-week trial).

2. Give back with time and money

It’s common in religious traditions to donate time and money, whether to faith-based institutions or nonprofit organizations. However, these practices aren’t reserved only for those belonging to a specific religious community. Anyone can donate to NGOs, environmental efforts, and give-back initiatives. Because I grew up tithing and giving a percentage of my income to my family church, I’ve enjoyed continuing this discipline as part of my adult spiritual practice. Through monetary donations, I can connect with nonpartisan organizations in my community and support impact-driven initiatives I believe in.

“Through monetary donations, I can connect with nonpartisan organizations in my community and support impact-driven initiatives I believe in.”

Likewise, consider implementing a volunteer schedule into your spiritual practice. Spend one afternoon a month serving with a local organization or participating in sustainability projects. Giving back with our time and money expands our worldview and invites us into collective spirituality.

3. Attend a spiritual retreat

Now and then, it is worth taking time away for a spiritual retreat — whether at an organized institution or for a solo getaway. Creating space for reflection, mentorship, and education is essential for spiritual growth and continued transformation, and by getting outside of our routine and familiar environment, we can more easily recenter ourselves. Retreats are also excellent for engaging with and learning from others on similar spiritual paths.

“Creating space for reflection, mentorship, and education is essential for spiritual growth and continued transformation.”

To start your search, check out this list of spiritual retreats (religious and non-religious) in the USA. There are numerous monasteries abroad (specifically in Europe and Asia) that are inclusive and welcoming, and many are set up for self-led retreats. Some even operate on a pay-what-you-can or work exchange system.

4. Hold space for rituals

When I think through some of my most meaningful spiritual rituals, the On Being podcast stands out. I’ve been listening to this podcast for over a year now, and it’s become a beacon in my spiritual journey. I once heard a woman say she spent every Saturday morning listening to the latest episode on her front porch. Other listeners have expressed similar sentiments, saying the show is a “consistent hour of peace” and a part of their “spiritual lexicon.”

Whether you listen to a podcast, attend a weekly spiritual service, or light a candle at the end of the day while reciting a poem or prayer, rituals are a meaningful way to practice discipline and reverence in your spiritual practice.

5. Experience “carbonated holiness”

“Laughter is carbonated holiness,” says Anne Lamott. I interpret this to mean that, through laughter and light-heartedness, we can connect to the sacred in ourselves, others, and the divine. This is a profound thought, especially as it relates to the Western culture’s overtly successful and performance-driven ethos.

“Through laughter and light-heartedness, we can connect to the sacred in ourselves, others, and the divine.”

Laughter, play, tenderness — these things can be a part of our spiritual practice, too. (How beautiful is that?) We can connect with something outside ourselves and return to the innocence of youth. For me, this looks like creating time for embodied and playful activities, creating art without judgment, and solo dance parties in the kitchen. It’s learning how to let go and laugh more often. Goofiness is some sort of magic, I’m convinced, and the most transformative spiritual discipline is the one where we learn not to take ourselves so seriously.

As a reminder, spirituality is what you make of it. My beliefs and practices have shifted over time, and I anticipate they will continue to evolve as I continue to learn, love, grieve, suffer, and experience all of the complexities this life has to offer us. My hope is that your own spiritual practices will help you do the same and serve as a reminder to look up and around in every season of life.
